Unit 8 | EXPLORING AMERICA WITH MAPS
EXPLORING AMERICA WITH MAPS
Imagine that you and your family wanted to visit the exact middle of the 50 United States (including the states of Hawaii and Alaska). This spot is called the geographic center. Your family learns that this place is near the town of Belle Fourche (bell foosh), South Dakota. Unless you live near Belle Fourche, you probably do not know how to get to this town.
Maps help us find places. We can use maps to find out how to get to any city in the United States. Other helpful tools are the atlas and globe. We can use these things to find countries, cities, and oceans all around the world. In this workbook, you will learn more about maps and how to read them.

Unit 8 | EXPLORING AMERICA WITH MAPS
1. DIRECTIONS ON A MAPWe often look at a map before going on a trip. Maps give all types of information about the place we want to visit. They can also tell you about places you may want to visit along the way. Maps use colors and pictures, or symbols, to tell us about places. You need to learn the meanings of these symbols to get the most out of maps.

Maps of the 50 States
Look at the map of the United States. Most of the map is made up of 48 states. Black lines show the borders between states. The states of Alaska and Hawaii are pictured in the lower left corner. Hawaii and Alaska are not connected to the rest of the United States. Alaska is to the north by Canada. Hawaii is made up of several islands in the Pacific Ocean. They are both U.S. states, even though they are not attached to the other 48. The boxes on the map are not where the states are actually located.
You will notice that Alaska looks about the same size as many of the states. Alaska is much larger than the states of Texas or California. On the map, Hawaii does not look that much smaller than Alaska. But Hawaii is closer in size to the state of Massachusetts.

Compass Rose
The four main directions are north, south, east, and west. Many maps have a circle in one corner with points or arrows on it marking these four directions. Often, the directions are marked with a capital letter. For example, N stands for north, and S stands for south.
This symbol is called a compass rose. The point that goes up shows the direction of north. The point that goes down shows the direction south. The arrow that goes to the right shows east, and the arrow on the left points west. We call these four directions the cardinal directions.
Almost all maps are printed the same way. North is always to the top of the map. South is always to the bottom of the map. East is always to the right side of the map. West is always to the left side of the map.

EXPLORING AMERICA WITH MAPS | Unit 8
Look at a globe. You will see some lines that run up and down. The lines stretch from the North Pole to the South Pole. These are lines of longitude. Other lines run all the way around the globe from east to west. These are lines of latitude. They are imaginary lines put on globes to help people find locations.
Lines of latitude and longitude are marked in degrees. The globe is split into 360 degrees. Each line is a certain number of degrees from the next. These lines help people describe exactly where a place is located in the world.

Unit 8 | EXPLORING AMERICA WITH MAPS
You will notice that some lines of longitude and latitude serve as the borders of states or countries. The border between Canada and the United States west of Minnesota is 49 degrees north latitude. Treaties often used lines of latitude or longitude to set borders.
Belle Fourche, South Dakota, is located at 45 degrees north latitude and 104 degrees west longitude. Washington, D.C., is located at 38 degrees north latitude and 77 degrees west longitude. Latitude and longitude can be hard to understand at first. You will learn more about these lines as you study more about geography.
