Mayville State University’s history education program prepares you to succeed in the classroom and make an impact on the lives of your students. The Program Mayville State’s history education program is designed to give you a genuine understanding of the events that have shaped the world. As a history education major at Mayville State, you’ll become a part of a tradition of training educators that is more than a century old. Mayville State began as a teachers college in 1889 and training educators remains a critical part of our mission. A history education degree will give you the knowledge of history and the teaching skills you need to be successful in the classroom. Advantages Knowledge. Mayville State University history faculty members include knowledgeable professors who have written about and traveled to many areas they cover in their classes, thus enhancing the subject matter in the classroom. Hands-on experience. The history education program offers you several opportunities to work with local middle and high school students and teachers in hands-on experiences. Information Technology Certificate. All Mayville State history education graduates earn an IT certificate that attests to their technological knowledge and skills, giving them a unique advantage in the job market. Flexible. The history education program lets you choose from many in- depth history electives, and you can pursue an additional major that will allow you to be certified to teach another subject. Opportunity You’ll have the chance to develop your leadership skills, which will help you succeed in your career after graduation. Athletes can get involved as members of men’s and women’s sports teams. All students have the opportunity to participate in all sorts of activities and clubs. Campus activities include theatre, band, choir, Campus Crusade, Science Club, Comet Radio, student government, intramural sports, and more. Success Our students get jobs. Period. We also have internship opportunities to give you real, hands-on learning experiences and make your resumé stand out. Job placement rates are consistently 96-98%! “Suite” Dorm Life MSU’s largest residence hall, Agassiz Hall, has been completely transformed to provide apartment- and suite- style living accommodations. Two- or four- person units are available. They all feature private bathrooms and spacious furnished living rooms. A Word About Our GradsMayville State graduates are making an impact as teachers and administrators in schools throughout North Dakota and Minnesota, and in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, Texas, and other states.

The history education program also prepares majors to pursue graduate studies. A 2006 graduate received the James Madison Graduate Fellowship to pursue his master’s degree. Teachers trained at Mayville State are leaders who make a tremendous professional and civic impact in their local communities.

History/History Education Minor

History education majors will complete 36 hours of general education courses including COMM 110, ECON 105, ENGL 110 and ENGL 120, GEOG 103, MATH 103, PSYC 111 and SOC 110, which are pre-requisite courses for this major.

Majors must also complete the major requirements and the secondary professional education core, including EDUC 485 - Secondary Methods for Social Science, EDUC 398 Secondary Education Field Experience, and EDUC/ENGL 426 Reading in the Content Area and a teaching or non-teaching minor.
