Operations against the Shobu Force were among the most difficult during the war. Yamashita’s forces kept several divisions and guerrilla forces occupied right up to the end of the war. His group was compressed into the area shown by1 July where it no longer could affect MacArthur’s use of Luzon as a base.
Griswold’s XIV Corps penetrated the Shimbu Line(5 Feb. line shown), using three divisions. On 15March, Hall’s XI Corps assumed control of the sectorand constituted operations against the Shimbu Group. The last important Japanese strongholds fell on 28 May.Thereafter, Japanese resistance was fragmented and ineffective.
The XIV Corps clearedsouthern Luzon, using the units shown. Organizedresistance from the Fuji Force(13,000 +/-) ceased on 15 June.
By 20 February, the XIV and XICorps had eliminated the KembuGroup as an effective force. Operationsthereafter were of a mop-up nature.
The 38th Infantry Division secured Bataan in Februaryafter opening the Zig-Zag trail (across base of Bataan). The 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment and elementsof the 38th Division seized Corregidor that same month. The 39th Division also cleared the Channel Islands.
