The Ancient Greeks
The Ancient Greeks were a civilisation that lived in Greece and the countries
that we now call Turkey and Bulgaria. We’re not quite sure of the exact dates
the Ancient Greeks lived, but we do know they were at their most powerful
between 2000BC and 146BC.

The Ancient Greeks
The Ancient Greeks didn’t use flags, however they did have
symbols on their shields to show which state they lived in.
Did you know?
The Ancient Greeks were split into lots of different states. Each state
was ruled in its own way, with their own laws, government and money.
However, all of the Ancient Greeks had the same language and the
same religion. The two most important cities were Athens and Sparta.
Athens is still important today. It is the capital city of Greece.

How do we know about the Ancient Greeks?
Even though the Ancient Greeks lived a long time ago,
archaeologists have learnt lots about them from objects they have
found. Archaeologists have dug up many Ancient Greek
artefacts and buildings. Marine archaeologists have also found
wrecks of Ancient Greek ships and their cargoes.
The most useful artefacts have been pottery items because they
are usually decorated with scenes of everyday life. Historians can
work out what life was like by studying the pictures on the pots.
