President’s Welcome2010 historic sandown
Welcome to the 19th Historic Sandown.
Welcome one and all to the VHRR “Return of the Thunder”, 19th Historic Sandown 2010. I extend a very special welcome to the VHRR Club Patron, Sir Jack Brabham, and thank him very much for making the tremendous effort to attend this meeting.
I would also like to take the opportunity to welcome Kevin Bartlett here as driver standards officer.
This year sees an entry of approximately 360 cars represented in all catergories. There should be some very exciting racing in all groups by Sunday afternoon!
On behalf of VHRR I extend a welcome to all of the competitors, and particularly those that have come from interstate to support this meeting. It is fantastic to see so many of you make such an effort to come to Sandown.
I also want to extend special thanks to all of the volunteer officials that have supported this meeting, including those from VHRR, MG Car Club Vic, Vic Flag Marshalls, Vic Scrutineers, Fire and Rescue, & Medical response.
Thank you also to our long time and very loyal sponsors, SHANNONS, PENRITE, COOLDRIVE & SPLITROCK and to all the other sponsors who have advertised with us in the program, or who have set up a trade stand at this event. Please take the time to have a look at the Trade stand area and support the sponsors that support Historic Racing. Without our sponsors we simply would not be able to run such great events.
Finally, on behalf of the VHRR I would like to thank our Noel Robson and the Sandown Race Committee & The MG Car Club of Victoria for the long hours and effort they put in to organise this great event.
Enjoy your weekend. Ian TatePresident VHRR
The Victorian Historic Racing Register sincerely thanks the sponsors & advertisers for their valuable support and commitment to the successful running of Historic Sandown. Without the support of these organisations the staging of this event would not be possible.

Commonwealth Games Silver Medallist Seen Lee will be assisting Don Kinsey with this weekend’s Trophy Presentations. Seen narrowly missed the Gold in Dehli due to an earlier ankle injury. Coincidentally, Seen is Anthony Dove’s partner, who is Bob Harborow’s mechanic. We wish her all the best for the future.

“With a massive 335kW of power and a staggering 570Nm
of torque the new Boss 335 GT stamps it’s dominance
over every other Australian performance car. The new
all-aluminium, supercharged Boss V8 is truly unbeatable.
And so is the roar from the bi-modal quad exhaust
system. Whether you choose the slick Tremec six-speed
manual or seamless ZF six-speed auto, you’re in for
the k ind of performance that’ l l leave everything
else eating your dust. That’s because I’ve worked with
FPV engineers to ensure the new Boss 335 GT dominates
in the hand l ing and brak ing departments as we l l .
This is, without doubt, the best GT I’ve ever driven and
in my opinion, the greatest
Australian muscle car ever.

Regularity Trophies: We are awarding 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in each Division, for each event, together with the team prize, which is awarded to a team of three drivers, all in the same division, or two in one. The points gained by each driver in the team for all events they compete in over the weekend, are added together, and the team with the highest points is the winning team. There is also a trophy for the Best Individual Regularity Driver of the Meeting, which is awarded on the highest total points retained after adding up results for all events for the weekend.

Historic Formula Ford afficionados will be aware that Historic Sandown 2010, signals the end of one era and the beginning of another for these popular little racing cars in which so many of our current stars right up to Formula one, have honed their skills from an early age. Sandown is possibly the last major event purely for these pre
1983 cars, with the introduction of younger pre-1990 classic Formula Fords into this category for 2011.
Pic shows 2009 Historic Formula Ford Championship winner, Jonathan Miles in his 1982 Reynard at Sandown last year where he still holds his current 2008 lap record of 1.22.93

Dick Johnson Racing - purchased the Greens Tuf Mustang from Zakspeed Germany in 1984 when racing in the European TCC driver Klaus Ludwig. Arriving Australia in late 1984 Johnson qualified at Bathurst in the newly formed Group A with co-driver John French they entered the Mustang and the Greens-Tuf Falcon both cars qualified - Falcon 3rd in Group C, Mustang 3rd in Group A.In 1985 Johnson raced the V8 Mustang as there were no local V8 Falcons produced. Perkins was his co driver for Bathurst. In September CAMS approved bodywork and engine upgrades increasing horsepower – the Mustang finished 2nd in the ATCC. During 1985 Johnson took the Zakspeed Mustang to New Zealand repainted it Black and Gold JPS colours, teamed with Neville Crichton
finishing 2nd in the Wellington 500.1986 was the final year the Greens-Tuf Mustangs would race in the ATCC - it was Dick Johnson Mustangs co-driven by Gregg Hansford that carried Fords hopes. 1987 saw the Zakspeed Mustang heading for NZ its new owner Robbie Ker repainted her White with NZ Police sponsorship. Enthusiast Bob Carlyle was the next owner storing the ex DJR car for many years just South of Auckland. In 2006 Ross Donnelley purchased the Zakspeed car restoring it to “as new” 1985 specs. It now has a C of D CAMS log book and races in Historic Group A.

This car was built by Garry Willmington at his workshop near Penrith in Sydney and made his first appearance at Winton Raceway in 1985 and competed throughout that year in the Australian Touring Car Championship, The AMSCAR Series at Amaroo Park and the Endurance Championship including Bathurst. It again competed in all of these events in the 1986 season. The best results included one 1st place and two second in the 1986 AMSCAR Series and a 5th place in 1985 at the Pepsi 250 held at Oran Park.At Bathurst in 1985 Garry finished a creditable 14th outright, in 1986 it qualified 12th only to retire with a wheel
bearing failure. It is also the only Group A XJS privately entered to ever win a race in the world.Tony purchased the car from Garry Willmington in 2006 and restored it as Garry Willmington developed it in Sydney without any fancy technological equipment the factory cars had who refused to let Garry have any of the developments or equipment they had available for the factory cars. Garry was still able to clock 265 KPH on the long Con Rod at Bathurst.Tony is happy to drive the car with reliability and show this unique touring car with a difference to other motor racing enthusiasts.

The car was constructed in 1970-1971 by Bob Britton Renmax Engineering for Ray Hanger, the 2nd Renmax BN6 of the five BN6 sports cars built by Britton. It was fitted with the original 1998CC Chevron BMW engine from the Doug McArthurs BN6 and a Hewland FT 200 five speed trans-axle.The car has competed extensively from 1971 to 1993 in the hands of five owners, with BMW, Ford Waggott, and Mazda Rotary Power Plants.
The care was written off in 1993 and layed idle until I purchased the car in September 2006 as a basket case and carried out a ground up total restoration back to its original 1971 specifications. The car now has a Historic C.O.D. and log book.

Le Mans will come to Historic Sandown this weekend where the appearance of three special racing
cars from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart coincides with the 40th anniversary of the marque’s first outright success in the 24-Hour sports car classic in 1970.
The three Museum cars, representing Porsche’s Le Mans participation from the early 1960s to the late 1990s, will be seen and heard on the 3.1km metropolitan Melbourne circuit as they take part in timed Regularity (average speed) events during the two-day annual ‘Return of the Thunder’ program.
The distinctive-looking Porsche 356B Carrera 2000 GS/GT, nicknamed ‘Dreikantschaber’ (‘three-pointed scraper’) because of its Butzi Porsche-designed wedge shape, competed at Le Mans in 1963.
Powered by a 1966cc, 208HP (155kW) development of the famous boxer four cam, four-cylinder engine fitted to the original Porsche 550 Spyder back in 1953, and
weighing just 820kg, the ‘DKS’ achieved 225km/h on the Mulsanne Straight, but it retired with engine failure.
However it represents a glorious era for Porsche 356-based sports cars at Le Mans that began in 1951 when a 1.1 litre aluminium-bodied ‘Gmund Coupe’ averaged 140km/h to win its class.
Porsche scored the first of its 16 outright Le Mans victories in 1970 with the 12-cylinder 917 sports car and the most recent 28 years later in 1998. This golden era is represented by two dramatically different vehicles from the company’s Museum – the legendary 340km/h Porsche 935 that won the World Constructors’ Championship in 1976 and 1977 and the first – and only – road-going ‘homologation’ version of the 1998 Le Mans-winning 911 GT1.
Powered by a turbocharged 2.8-litre boxer engine producing 434kW at 7,900rpm, the 935 appearing at Historic Sandown is the
actual car campaigned in 1976 by Belgian Jacky Ickx and German ace Jochen Mass and has been fully-restored to its original race condition.
Other than minimal road equipment to allow it to be registered in Europe, the GT1 is identical to the car that won Le Mans in 1998 on Porsche’s 50th anniversary. It is powered by a twin turbocharged, 3.2-litre, six-cylinder boxer engine producing 400kW at 7,200 rpm and has a top speed of 350km/h.
Adding further excitement to the Porsches’ appearance at Historic Sandown, Porsche ‘Rolling Museum’ director Klaus Bischof will be flying to Melbourne specifically to demonstrate the cars.
“Australians are motorsport enthusiasts and very knowledgeable of Porsche’s motorsport heritage,” said Bischof. “The 935 and GT1 are iconic Porsche racing cars and I know they will be appreciated by Porsche enthusiasts who visit Sandown.”

The tale of Touring Car racing in Australia
When the dapper doyen of Australian motoring journalists, David McKay, crossed the line 50 years ago at the Gnoo Blas circuit near Orange in New South Wales to win the inaugural Australian Touring Car Championship, he started something very big. That one-race Cup marked the first time that hotted-up family cars were legitimized with their own championship. A tradition began that would capture the imagination of a nation and begin the tribal Holden-Ford rivalry that now drives the V8 Supercar Championships of today.Sedans had been raced since the early fifties, often in “run what yer brung” butcher’s picnic events, or in with sports cars in GT and Production races, and increasingly, in hotly contested races of their own. The most popular mounts were the 48-215 and FJ Holden models and on that February day in 1960 a fleet of eight Humpies chased the battling 3.4 litre Jaguars of McKay, Bill Pitt and Ron Hodgson into motoring racing history. Behind them trailed Austin Lancers and Morris Majors, two Simca Arondes, a Peugeot 203, and a lone NSU Prinz. The sixties was a decade of massive change and Australian motor racing, particularly with touring cars, changed fast. The newly formed Appendix J racing (named after its section in the rule book) saw the revolutionary Mini, the basic-but-fast Ford Cortina variants and the tough, home grown EH Holden challenge the Jaguars. By mid-decade, light often beat might. These cars are represented by the Group Nb Historic Touring Cars you’ll see racing this weekend. But half way through, the game changed big time. In December 1964 a Ford Mustang competed for the first time. In early 1965, if you didn’t drive a Mustang, you weren’t in the hunt. To the end of 1972, Improved Touring Cars, as the series was now called, was dominated by V8s. The big gun Mustangs of legends like Moffat, Geoghegan and Jane would be eventually beaten to the Championship by Norm Beechey’s Monaro, while the 2.2 litre Porsche 911S (deemed a touring car because it had a “back seat”) led the smaller challenge
along with Ford Escorts, Alfa Romeos and Minis. You’ll see these cars in the Group Nc races. However, throughout the sixties a parallel series had been running. The Armstrong 500 for Series Production cars, or Group E, began at Phillip Island before moving to Bathurst. These annual enduros for supposedly stock showroom cars, with classes based on price rather than capacity, became very popular with manufacturers as well as with the public. As they came to realise that what won on Sunday sold on Monday, the Big Three - Holden, Ford and Chrysler - engineered their Bathurst specials. Holden began with the Monaro then went the nimble route with the Torana, Ford went for brawn with the mighty Falcon GT with HO variants, Chrysler started with the Pacer and ended with the Charger. Series Production races became a feature of race meetings everywhere, with hotter versions of these cars also competing in Improved Touring. In 1973, the rules changed again. Series Production and Improved Touring blended into Group C, a blanket touring car formula that ran until the introduction of the “global” Group A in 1985. This format which saw cars from around the world race on Australian soil became the Holden-Ford two horse race from 1992, that was eventually named V8 Supercars. This weekend Group A and C cars will make Historic Sandown history with a 15-lap event in which drivers make a pit stop for a sash to be put into their cars, emulating the endurance races of the era.Once the poor cousin of “proper racing cars”, touring car racing has become Australia’s premier formula, its Formula 1. David McKay, the gentleman amateur who formed Australia’s first professional motor racing team, Scuderia Veloce, the equipe that raced open wheelers, sports and touring cars, must have been amazed to see family sedan car racing grow to become the mega-million dollar business it is today. He passed away on December 26th 2004.

Rolls Royce Merlin On Display in the Trade Stands Area (running)
A short story about the Merlin job.
It started when I was part way through rebuilding an Armstrong Siddeley radial engine. While looking for parts to complete this job I found the hollow remains of a Merlin engine with almost no mechanical parts inside. Being a complex engine it took a number of years to locate enough parts to finish the job, many parts being found on rural properties around the countryside.
The engine was finally assembled over more years in the lounge room at home. After rebuilding the Merlin from scratch I can say they were a true masterpiece of their time, and still are now. David

same as pre-war (1940). This car still uses a 1939 Mercury Flathead engine, drum brakes, transverse springs, that was all that was needed in the 30’s and still does a great job today.
This car has had Class wins at Sandown and Philip Island and was the outright hillclimb record holder at Myrniong for 2 years.

The E9 BMW coupe in CS, CSi and CSL iterations was raced extensively in sports and touring car events from the late 1960s to the mid seventies (in 1976 Peter Brock raced a CSL at Le Mans). This CSi was originally a UK delivery car, and was built up from a bare shell by Ian Burrell and Bill Rama in Melbourne. The car was re-launched at Calder in 2006 and has been raced in Group S at Sandown, Phillip Island and Winton, and at track days. It features a welded-in roll cage,
close ratio gearbox, limited slip diff, firm race suspension and a six cylinder engine producing over 250 bhp. Owner Richard Batchelor, a retired stockbroker, previously raced in the original Porsche Cup race series and in Marque Sports. (Photo: Neil Hammond)

This remarkable racing two seater hardtop coupe has been confirmed by British Industry Heritage Trust as one of the three competition cars built by the Donald Healey Motor Company for the 1963 Sebring 12-Hour Race. Three BJ7 style cars were road registered as ’54 FAC’, ’56 FAC’ and ’57 FAC’.Each car was heavily modified and lightened with mainly aluminium bodies, aluminium cylinder heads and triple twin-choke Weber carburettors. ’57 FAC’ was used as the Team’s practice car for Sebring and driven by South African Bob Olthoff, American Ronnie Bucknum, Donald Morley and the great Paddy Hopkirk. In 1964, ’57 FAC’ won the 4-Hour ‘Sundown Grand Prix’ in torrential rain during the Player’s ‘200’ meeting at Mosport Park close to the shores of Lake
Ontario in Canada, driven by Don Kindree and Al Pease. Kindree was crowned 1964 Canadian Racing Drivers Champion with his successes at the wheel of ’57 FAC’.In 1964, the car returned to Sebring to compete in the 12-Hour race driven by Paddy Hopkirk and Grant Clark. The car was painstakingly restored in North America by Tom Kovac of FourinTune to its original 1963 Sebring spec. The car then went to auction at Earl’s Court London in October 1989 and was purchased by Victor Gauntlett, the then owner of Aston Martin. Some years later, the car was purchased at the May 1992 Monaco auction by well-known Queensland collector, Frank Moore, who undertook another major restoration of the car before it came into its present ownership.

Made in the UK, the Powerlite range of High Torque Starter Motors and Performance Dynamos
is a revolution in the supply of rotating electrics. All units have been designed as a direct, enhanced
replacement for the original part, or as a custom fit unit for a new engine design. They have been designed,
tested and installed in the application therefore ensuring that all units fit the application they are listed for. All Powerlite
products are produced in the UK, by auto electricians who have an extensive knowledge of British Classic Cars.
The basic concept of the PowerLite range is to substitute an out-dated, low output heavy unit, or one that cannot cope with
extra power required to start a modern engine, with one that is lighter, more powerful, more reliable and easier to fit.

This was the first Chevron B42 built and carries some B40 bodywork, being the nose in particular. Its most notable victory was the 1977 Macau GP where it was driven by Ricardo Patrese. The car is now presented in this livery. It was entered by Bob Harper for Patrese and sponsored by Remy Martin. The car was subsequently campaigned by leading NZ driver of the time, Steve Millen. His victories included the 1978 Malaysian GP. The car came to Australia in the early 80s’ . I acquired it in April 2008. It underwent a complete restoration and I drove it for the first time at the NZ Festival of Speed this January.

DRIVER: ROSS JACKSON - DE TOMASO PANTERA
After running a pretty but terrifying Sunbeam Tiger in Group Sb for three years, Ross Jackson bought his 1972 DeTomaso Pantera in 2002 from well known racer Max Hooper, who had imported it from the USA. Having always loved Ford V8s (Ross ran an XW GTHO Falcon in Grand Prix Rallies for over a decade before stepping up to historic circuit racing) the 351 Cleveland engined Pantera was a dream car for Ross. He still has his 1972 edition of “World`s Fastest Sports Cars”, which he bought as an 11 year old, and which featured the Pantera. Although their 70’s Italian build quality left something to be
desired (Elvis famously shot his when it refused to start) the Pantera’s combination of 5 speed ZF transaxle, mid mounted V8 and timeless Tom Tjaada design has been increasingly appreciated in recent years. Ross was the first to develop one for Australian Group S racing. Now there are three running in Victoria alone. This car has been running consistently in Group S for the past 8 years and has numerous class wins at circuits, hillclimbs and sprints to its credit. It has won outright at Historic Sandown and Ross won both the VHRR Championship and the Lou Molina Trophy with this beautiful coupe in 2006.

Saggy Sarah - LC GTR XU1This is one of the original Holden Dealer Team Giant Killer XU1’sIt has seen action as a series production touring car and a rally car for the Dealer Team and as a rally car, sports sedan, rallycross car and as a commuter under the ownership of Capt. Peter Janson. As a touring car, it has been raced at Sandown, Bathurst, Surfers, Oran Park and Winton and according to Harry Firth, Warwick Farm as well as picking up some wins and placings along the way.As a sports sedan, it has competed at Sandown, Phillip Island, Winton, Amaroo Pk, AIR, Calder and Mallala with a number of wins and places under the captain’s skilful guidance. As a rally car, it has competed in Noumea, the Sunraysia 250, the ‘71/’72 ARC, Southern Cross, Dulux and BP rallies as well as the VIC. State Rally Series. The car was very successful winning some ARC rounds and some VIC Rally rounds as well as many top 5 performances with Bond/Shepheard, Janson/Osborne, Janson/Prendergast, Ferguson/Johnson. The captain retired the car in late ’74 with in excess of 75,000 racing miles on it. Alan Lukins purchased the car and began the transformation to a more serious sports sedan. This was finished off by Bruce Watt and ran as a naturally aspirated car for a couple of years before a revamp which included a number of components from
The Dealer Team “Rallycross Beast”, (including the supercharger, manifold, pulleys and carburettors) many of which are still in place today although the supercharger was replaced with current unit in the early 80’s. The old girl was eventually sold to the ACT in ’84 and after a brief stay there, came to Adelaide in ’85 and has remained there since, being used as a sports sedan and then as a club sprint car as well was competing at the Collingrove Hillclimb. The car was also featured in the ’71 movie about the Holden Dealer Team “What’s a nice car like you doing in a sport like this” and also appeared in Castrol ads of the day. This car has been raced by the following people: -Colin Bond, Bob Morris, Peter Brock, Capt. Peter Janson, Barry Ferguson, Frank Kilfoyle, Bruce Watt, Nick Burgess, John Anderson, Greg Camillos, Wayne Reddy, Aaron Reddy, Larry Kavanagh and according to Harry Firth, - Christine Cole and Sandra Bennett.Navigators for rallying include: - George Shepheard, Mike Osborne, Mike Prendergast and Dave Johnson. The car is certainly one of the most raced and successful cars in Australian Motorsport, with just on 80,000 racing miles and many victories and placings in all categories raced, it’s hard to argue with the facts.Current custodian: Larry Kavanagh

A SANDGROPER AT SANDOWN!I’m 51 years old and president of the WA Historic Touring Car club. I’ll be participating in my Tangerine Torana which has made the trek across the Nullarbor, attending the Muscle Car Masters at Eastern Creek in September and now Historic Sandown. After growing up in Victoria and attending many touring car races at Sandown in the 80’s I now have the chance to compete on this wonderful track. This has been a long time dream together with being fortunate enough to also participate at Phillip Island, Mallala and Bathurst. This racing event is the era I grew up in, I really enjoy racing the Torana and the fact that so many people love to come and watch us.
My racing started in this car at Barbagallo raceway in WA about 3 years ago and over a couple of beers with my partner in crime Stuart Young who also has a Torana GTR XU1. We decided to tackle a couple of tracks over east having attended Phillip Island three years ago the bug bit deep. So here we both are competing at this fantastic circuit for the second time with the angry Torries! As well as Stuart and myself a group of enthusiastic friends come over and volunteer to help us out if needed but most of all they will enjoy the racing weekend. The effort, cost and camaraderie make this meeting really worthwhile. By the way, can I order sunshine? We don’t like it when it rains!

Natural ability, nerve and attuned reflexes are all essentials, but these things are common to most good drivers. Playing it by ear is fine-mostly. It’s knowing exactly what’s happening in there-the motor, the electrical system, transmission, every second-that counts. This feedback information can only come from professional instrumentation…. Instruments keep you in touch, get you full-time power and performance. You drive with computer precision. A Tach, for instance- gives you a split-second edge during gear change. The Engine Performance Gauge telegraphs engine problems. The Battery Condition Indicator helps side-step critical breakdowns. And Ammeters, Oil Pressure Gauges, Temperature Gauges, Vacuum Gauges-these and all the other matched-design instruments make a dash-good story….It’s like driving with a computer on your side, right?”When the above text appeared in 1972 as part of a Smiths Industries advertising campaign Howard Instruments was listed as a Smiths Sales and Service Agent. 35 Years later we are the only company from the original Australia wide list that still Sells and Services Smiths Instruments along with all of the other famous brands. We even have the original staff actively involved in Selling and Servicing!

profile: TWR Jaguar XJS
Built by TWR over the winter of 1983/4, this is one of the four genuine ‘lightweight’ chassis constructed by TWR to win the 1984 European Touring Car Championship. In its ‘84 campaign the car experienced a great deal of its success, with notable victories at the Spa 24 Hours, Donnington 500 mile and Salzburgring sprint round. After ‘84 the cars success continued when it was involved in all of TWR’s selected international campaigns including the memorable Bathurst win (where it was driven by John Goss), Mt Fuji (Japan), the Macau Street GP and the Wellington Street Race (New Zealand). Over it’s
intense three-year campaign the car was driven by Win Percy, Chuck Nicholson, Tom Walkinshaw, Denny Hulme, Hans Heyer, John Goss, Armin Hahne, David Sears, Martin Brundle, Enzo Calderari and Jean-Louis Schlesser. The chassis’ most noteable achievements are the 1984 Spa 24 hour and 1985 Bathurst 1000 wins, being the only Jaguar to ever win either of these events. The car was bought from the Kinch collection in Aberdeen, Scotland in 2007 and returned to Australia by Mike and Jordan Roddy. It is currently the only actively campaigned TWR XJS Group A in the world.

Flying takes place every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at 1pm weather permitting, from mid January until mid December. No bookings necessary.
Admission to the Museum is free.
The five airworthy aircraft are: Winjeel, CT4, Mustang, Tiger Moth and replica Sopwith Pup.
Visitors to the Museum also have the opportunity to view restorers at work in the restoration hangar. At present, Museum staff and Volunteers are restoring a Mosquito aircraft, the only RAAF Mosquito with an active service record remaining in Australia.

profile: Gladiator
THE GLADIATOR was built by Barry Taylor of Sydney in 1957 using the modified engine and gearbox from an MGTC he had raced at Mt Druitt earlier in the 1950’s, a tubular chassis built by Arthur Rizzo using MGTF front and rear axles, suspension and brakes, and a special fibreglass Buchanan body. The Buchanan bodies had used a mould taken from Tom Sulman’s Aston Martin DB3S, but The Gladiator differed by having only one door, a large headrest behind the driver, no bonnet scoop, only one hump on the dash, no bootlid, and was fitted with an undertray. The car took its name and identity from the unit of the Royal Marines of which Barry Taylor was a member in WW2.The Gladiator’s first race meeting was at Bathurst, Easter 1958, also running at the October meeting, but the MG engine proved to be unreliable and was replaced in 1959 by a modified Holden motor, later that year the nose was lengthened in an effort to alleviate front end lift on Bathurst’s Con Rod straight. In this form the Gladiator was quite successful, usually being placed in the first six in Bathurst’s then popular sports car races.Late in 1959 well known MG racer, Holt Binnie acquired the Gladiator and proceeded to race it at every opportunity until 1964, mainly at Bathurst and Warwick Farm, in later stages the car was known as the Vandervell Holden in deference to
Holt’s crankshaft reclaiming business. In 1973, Don Simpson who lived at Blaxland in the Blue Mountains answered an advert for an old racing car at Concord for sale for $30. It was the Gladiator and it was a mess. Undeterred, Don paid up, took it home and began the lengthy task of restoring it to its former glory. It was virtually completed by January 1977 and had a shakedown run at Amaroo prior to its debut at the Historic race meeting later that month but Don was tragically killed in the Granville train disaster while travelling to work on Jan 18th, 1977.His widow, Narelle intended to keep the Gladiator but in 1989 John Trezise of Sydney became its fourth owner. John raced the Gladiator regularly in Historic events until selling it in August, 2000, to Dick Willis of Coffs Harbour. As the Gladiator had by now become somewhat tatty, Dick completely stripped and restored the car, hoping to be able to have the car relive its glory days as raced by Barry Taylor and Holt Binnie. Its first appearance after restoration was at the HSRCA’s Historic meeting at Oran Park GP circuit in April 2001 where it took pole position, and it has since been successfully raced at Wakefield Park, Goulburn and at Queensland Raceway, Ipswich and Bathurst and at the Grafton Hillclimb and Leyburn (Qld) Sprints.

The VHRR was established in 1976 to promote Historic Motor Racing in Victoria, and where possible assist with its growth throughout Australia. Race meetings and speed events are held though-out the year, giving owners of historic racing cars, and those interested in such vehicles, the opportunity to exercise their cars and feel the exhilaration of running such fine machinery, or just to be close by.
The club has been so successful over the years that meetings held at the Grand Prix Circuit at Phillip Island in February/March, and at Sandown Park in November, now attract some of the most awe-inspiring cars from Australia, New Zealand, and the rest of the world. We regularly see cars from the UK, USA, Germany, Hong Kong etc. Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, BRM, Maserati, Cooper, Jaguar, HMW, Maybach, MG, Lago Talbot, plus many Australian specials.
Many overseas owners and drivers find the warmth of the welcome at these meetings, the charisma of racing at these fabulous circuits, and the Australian hospitality, brings them back to this country year after year.
Added to the racing is the possibility to holiday in world class resorts around Australia,
either before or after the events. Another incentive for visiting the race at Phillip Island early in the year, is that the Australian Grand Prix (the first GP race of the season) is held a week or so later. What an opportunity! Come and see world class racing, Historic and modern at two of the best circuits in the world.
It is not necessary to own your own historic car. Many VHRR members join the club to be involved in the historic movement. To assist if they wish, or to merely enjoy the vicarious pleasures of historic racing.
The VHRR caters for cars meeting the requirements of the 5th Category in Australia, or invited cars.
At race meetings you might see open wheeled racing cars, flashy racing sports cars. Formula Ford, Formula Junior, Touring Cars from the 1920’s to the 1980’s. Some of the cars are driven by well-known racing identities still keeping their hand in. A world champion might even make an appearance!
So whether you race, or just want to watch, the VHRR has full race meetings, hill climbs or speed events to cater for you.
