1. Objectives

This survey aims to collect information about the hiring plans of companies in Hong Kong. The pay trends regarding full-time employees indifferent industries between 2018 and 2019 were also collected for analysis. These findings will help companies make informed hiringdecisions and provide useful data on pay/benefits adjustments.

2. Survey coverage

The survey covered 271 companies from 24 industries. Only full-time exempt employees working in Hong Kong were surveyed, whileexpatriates, part-time and temporary employees were excluded. Among the surveyed companies, 76% employ 50 staff or less, 12%employ 51-100 staff, 4% 101-200 staff, and 8% over 200 staff.

3. Datum point

Basic monthly salary (excluding any bonuses, but including commission) of surveyed companies as at 1 September 2018 was recordedand predicted adjustment of basic monthly salary in 2019 was captured. The compensation and benefits in 2018 and 2019 were alsosurveyed.

4. Data collection method

The survey was conducted through an online questionnaire. Companies were invited to fill in the questionnaire through email from 6 to29 September 2018.

5. Data analysis

Surveyed companies were requested to provide data of basic monthly salary of each job position in 2018, predicted salary adjustment ofeach job position in 2019 and compensation and/or benefits provided.

The data was analyzed to determine the “average”, “median”, “25th percentile”, “75th percentile”, or “percentage” for basic monthly salary.For predicted salary adjustment, annual leave and performance bonus, “average” was to be determined. For other compensation orbenefits, “percentage” was to be determined.

Separate analyses were carried out by grouping the surveyed companies according to their industry or size, or grouping job positionsaccording to job functions.

Basic monthly salary (HK$): the present monthly salary excluding any bonuses (both guaranteed and non-guaranteed bonuses) butincluding commission in a particular job position. The present salary was recorded as at 1 September 2018.

Predicted adjustment (%): the predicted adjustment of a basic monthly salary in a particular job position in 2019.

Employees: it refers to those full-time salaried employees working in Hong Kong only. Expatriates, part-time and temporary employeesare excluded.

Employee level: employees are grouped into four categories based on their field’s experience:

1.Top / Senior Management

2.Middle Management / Non-managerial Professionals

3.Supervisory / Officers

4.Clerical / Frontline

Average: a mathematical average of a set of data values (basic monthly salaries, percentage adjustments, number of annual leave, andperformance bonus).

Median*: a middle number of a set of data values (basic monthly salaries and percentage adjustments) which divides the whole set intohalves.

25th percentile (1st quartile)*: it is the number of a set data values (basic monthly salaries) which cuts off the lowest 25% of data.

75th percentile (3rd quartile)*: it is the number of a set data values (basic monthly salaries) which cuts off the highest 25% of data.

Inter-quartile Range (Q-range)*: the difference between the data values at the 25th and 75th percentiles and is a measure of statisticaldispersion.

*For basic monthly salary, any positions with less than 3 companies or 5 employees are excluded from the calculation of average, medianand Q-range.

*For annual leaves and bonus, industries with less than 3 companies will not be shown.

1.2 Hiring plan forecast (Q1 2019)

38% of the respondents revealed plans to hire new employees in Q1 2019 from the latest survey in 2018, which represents quite asignificant decline of 17% from similar survey last year (55%). 24% of the respondents reported they would freeze their hiring process,indicating a slight decline of 2% from similar survey last year (26%). 2% of the respondents have headcount reduction plans.

1.4 Purpose of hiring new employees (Q1 2019)

A majority of the surveyed companies reported that the purpose of new recruitments is to increase headcount to meet business needs(92%) and to replace resigning employees (40%). A small portion (8%) reported that it was for replacing current staff members.

Most of the companies with plans to replace current staff members reported that such decisions are mostly due to the unsatisfactoryperformance (100%), poor working attitude (57%) and lack of job motivation (57%) of current staff members.

A prevailing majority (96%) of the candidates declined the offers because they had accepted another job offer. Other reasons include “theterms of the offers are unsatisfactory” (82%) and “preferring to stay with the current company” (42%).

Among all other benefits, transportation allowance was the most common among hirers in 2018. 34% of the respondents provided“transportation allowance for travelling outside Hong Kong during normal working days”, while 25% provided “education allowance”.

Employment market

38% of the surveyed companies were planning to increase headcount in Q4 2018, representing a reduction of 17% compared to thesimilar survey last year (55%). There was a general perception that the employment market in Q4 2018 would be less active than thesimilar survey last year, with only 2% respondents planning to decrease headcount, same as 2017.

The two key factors for hirers to consider when making job offers are “relevant work experience” (68%), “qualification” and “expectedpackage” (51%) of candidates, which are the traditional concerns in the market.

Among the companies having made employment offers in the past 12 months, 68% had some of their offers declined, mainly becausethe target candidates “accepted another job offer” (96%).

Salary adjustments and bonuses

In general, the predicted salary raise in 2019 will be 3.0%. 68.8% of employees are predicted to receive a pay raise in 2019, which isalmost the same as that in the similar survey last year. 26% employees will receive a salary raise of over 4%.

The surveyed companies offered an average performance bonus equivalent to 1.47 months of basic salary in 2018 (1.36 months in2017). Only 10% of these companies provided employees with guaranteed performance bonus, same as that in the similar survey lastyear.

In average, the surveyed companies offered 12.5 days of annual leave to employees in 2018. For other leave benefits, marriage leave(57%) and compassionate leave (56%) are the most common.

To encourage work-life balance, most of the companies provide employees with five-day work week (86%) and early leave on festivedays (83%). Meanwhile, up to 15% of the companies are considering to offer “company activities (e.g. traveling, interest class)” policy inthe coming year.
