  • Brunswick Mechanics Institute (BMI) is a cultural enterprise in the heart of Melbourne’s creative community. Working with leading creative organisations across Melbourne, BMI hosts a diverse cultural program of performance, film, talks and music, as well as classes, workshops and community celebrations. Behind the scenes, leading artists use the spaces to create new contemporary works.

    BMI is available for private hires and events year-round. The venue features a black box theatre, two light-filled studios, a newly renovated bar and landscaped forecourt. Our spaces are beautiful, unique and affordable. BMI can host a wide range of events and functions including meetings, classes and workshops, rehearsals and artistic developments, photo and film shoots and public presentations of new work and community events.

    Located on Sydney Road in the heart of Brunswick, with the number 19 tram just outside and Brunswick and Jewell train stations a short walk away, BMI is easily accessible from the CBD and surrounding areas.

  • The Theatre is a traditional black box, suitable for live performance (theatre, contemporary dance and music), community events, film screenings, literary launches, creative developments, showings, micro-festivals and presentations.

    The Theatre contains a 111-seat retractable tiered seating bank. The space is fully equipped with a suite of lighting, sound and AV equipment. Black curtains circle the room to block all-natural light if required. The space connects to a backstage area, dressing room space offered on a case-by-case basis. The Theatre, backstage and dressing room spaces are all wheelchair accessible.

    The Theatre can accommodate more than 111 people seated (with the seating bank extended and additional chairs) or 200 people standing. The space opens to the Brunswick Mechanics Institute foyer with a fully licensed bar.

  • Studio 1 is a highly adaptable, large bright room with hardwood floors, white walls, high ceilings and four large windows. The space is suitable for creative developments and showings, photoshoots and film shoots, exhibitions, dance and exercise, community events, rehearsals, workshops and classes, meetings, small functions and auditions. The space opens to the Brunswick Mechanics Institute foyer with a fully licensed bar.

    Studio 1 can accommodate up to 80 people standing and 55 seated, with furniture that can be configured in a number of layouts to suit the purpose of your hire.

The space is ideal for meetings, interviews, play readings, co-working, auditions, presentations, small rehearsals and classes. A large glass door opens onto the BMI forecourt allowing street access into the room if desired. The space opens to the Brunswick Mechanics Institute foyer with a fully licensed bar.

    Studio 2 can accommodate small groups and the furniture can be configured in a number of layouts to suit the purpose of your hire.

    Note: exclusive use of Studio 1, Studio 2 and/or the Theatre attracts an additional 20% surcharge. Exclusive use ensures no one else will use the space during a multi-day hire e.g. the hirer may leave set/equipment in the space overnight.

    MABU MABU

    Mabu Mabu are a Torres Strait owned and run business with an emphasis on using fresh, seasonal and native ingredients to create beautiful dishes that bring people together. Mabu Mabu is a term from the Torres Strait that translates to ‘help yourself.’ Traditionally, a Mabu Mabu is a banquet, shared table or big family meal. Their menu ranges from creative finger food to a whole village feast.

  • Brunswick Mechanics Institute is located at 270 Sydney Road, Brunswick VIC 3056.

    Brunswick Mechanics Institute is a wheelchair-accessible venue, with gender-neutral and accessible bathrooms. The hirable spaces at the venue operate all on one level, however flooring can be uneven in places.

    Accessible entry to the building is via the front door, which has a ramp to its left (if viewing from Sydney Road). This is the main entrance and exit to the building for all patrons.

  • AFTER-HOURS ACCESS

    After-hours access is possible, via arrangement with the venue. Hirers are issued with information for access outside of business hours and hirer inductions include opening and locking-up procedures.

    PUBLIC TRANSPORT

    Brunswick Mechanics Institute is located next to the Brunswick Town Hall/Sydney Road tram stop on the number 19 line, just a 17-minute tram ride from Melbourne Central.

    We are a 9-minute walk from both Brunswick Station and Jewell Station.

    The 506 (Moonee Ponds – Westgarth Station) bus runs along Glenlyon Road with a stop just outside Brunswick Mechanics Institute on Glenlyon Road.

    PARKING

    General permit parking is available in the car park directly behind the venue with entry located on David Street. The car park permit hours of operation are 8am – 5pm. Parking after 5pm is free.

    There are 2 × wheelchair accessible parking spaces located at the corner of David Street and Glenlyon Road, and another 2 × wheelchair accessible parking spaces located a little further down Glenlyon Road, in front of the Brunswick Community Health Centre. If navigating to the venue entrance from these parking spaces, you’ll need to head back up Glenlyon Road (towards Sydney Road), in order to enter the venue.

    CYCLING

    Brunswick Mechanics Institute opens onto the corner of Sydney Road and Glenlyon Road, adjacent to Brunswick Town Hall. A dedicated cycling lane runs along Glenlyon Road and along the Upfield train line.
