Alison McLarty & Jay WorthyOVE IS IN THE AIR!!! We are so pleased to welcome in the month of L-O-V-E with our cover couple, Alison McLarty and Jay Worthy. Alison and Jay are engaged to be married on May 23rd. They both live in

Hiram and have two dogs, Payton and Daisy. Payton is a Great Dane and Daisy is a Dachshund; you get one guess as to which dog is in charge.

Alison is the daughter of Lynn and Dennis McLarty, and has been in Paulding for seven years. Before that, she was a resident of Douglasville. Alison is a computer applications teacher at South Paulding Middle School and the Head Cheerleading Coach. She also serves on the faculty at Chattahoochee Technical College.

Jay is the son of Kathi and Jerry Lynn Worthy, and has been a Paulding resi-dent since birth. He works in sales for a merchant credit card processing company called Omega Bank Card. He promises he has the lowest rates and best customer service. On his free time, Jay coaches a rec basketball team.

Alison and Jay have been together ever since a chance meeting while both were out to dinner with friends. When he proposed, Alison had just gradu-ated with her Master’s Degree. Before heading out to celebrate with her parents, they went for a walk with their dogs. Jay stopped and got down on one knee to pop the question. Being the gentleman that he is, Jay had already asked Alison’s Dad for his permission to marry her. Of course, the answer was “YES!”

Both Alison and Jay are very excited about their upcoming wedding. We had to ask where they were going on their honeymoon, but Jay is keeping it a secret, even from Alison. For Valentine’s Day they will have a nice, romantic dinner out and finalize some plans for their wedding.

We had a great time getting to know this lovely, young couple and appreci-ate them being on our cover this month. Congratulations, Alison and Jay! We wish you all the best!

Congratulations Jay & Alison

he prospect of seeing the world is exciting, and now your children

can experience their own trip around the world at Rossitch Pediatric Dentistry without having to board an airplane.

Dr. Michael Rossitch opened Rossitch Pediatric Dentistry a little over a year ago in January 2008. When he first thought

about opening his own practice, he had an “around the world” theme in mind. “Dr. Mike” had a vision to create a positive experience for children and provide quality dental care. After taking a tour of the practice, you will see that Dr. Mike achieved his goal.

Rossitch Pediatric Dentistry is a state-of-the-art dental practice that specializes in comprehensive dental care of infants, children, adolescents, and patients with special needs. They are completely dedicated to the oral health of children. Their team is committed to providing the highest quality dental care and they encourage parents to play an active role in their child’s oral health. They strive to provide an environment that is fun, safe, relaxed, child-friendly and on the cutting edge of technology while focusing on prevention and education for families. Their goal is to provide an environment in which your child will develop a positive attitude toward dentistry and keep a happy smile for life. What better way than seeing the world?

As you enter their office, kids are greeted by the world map which gives them a preview of their trip. Cleanings are handled on an African safari. After waiting in the tent for their safari tour, they can relax and watch the giraffes, elephants and lions of Africa. Fillings and other procedures are handled in the mountains of Asia with the pandas playing on the rocks.

There are private treatment rooms available for trips to the Australian outback with the koalas and kangaroos, the Amazon Rainforest with a beautiful waterfall - watch out for the snake, and in Antarctica where they can float on an iceberg with the penguins – wear a jacket, it’s cold! Also, parents have their own waiting area on the roof tops of Paris, while enjoy-ing a cup of coffee at Café De Rossitch.

Dr. Mike was born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He attended UNC at Chapel Hill where he graduated with a BS in Biology. In 2001 he graduated from the UNC School of Dentistry with highest honors and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor society. After Dr. Mike completed three additional years of specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry, he received a master’s degree in Pediatric Dentistry from the UNC School of Dentistry in 2004. He has received prestigious awards and belongs to many Dental Associations. Dr. Mike currently resides in Kennesaw with his wife, Shannon, three sons and his golden retriever.

Included in Dr. Mike’s team are Casey Walton, Heather Howerter and Amy Hartley. They have been with him since the opening and share Dr. Mike’s dedi-cation to his patients. Rossitch Pediatric Dentistry is a team that is complete-ly focused on the experience of their patients, as well as the quality of their dental care. Truly, it’s an experience, not to be missed!

By J. H. Daniel

inding the right contractor is very importantin any type of remodeling project. Thereshould be a lot of research and checking

information before making a choice. Here areten tips to help you, the homeowner, in findingand hiring the best contractor for your project.1.Lookforacontractorwithastrongtrackrecordofsuccessinyourcommunity.Thispersonwillhavesur-vivedandthrived.Thebusinesswillbewellestablishedandpeoplewillknowthecontractorandhisorherwork.2.Lookforacontractorwithknowledgeandexperi-enceinthekindofworkyouwantdone.Experienceisimportant.Youneedacontractorwhohasexperienceandknowledgeofthespecifickindofworkyouwantdone.Forexample,youdon’twanttohirearoofertodoanelectricaljob.Wheninterviewingcontractorsforyourproject—askthemwhatprojectstheyarework-ingonnow.Theylikelyaredoingseveral—ifoneormoreisaprojectsimilartoyours,that’sagoodsign.3. Check vital information on the contractor. Checkwith the stateor local licensingboard if contractorsarerequiredtobelicensedinyourareatoensurethatthecontractorisproperlylicensedtodothekindofwork you need and that the license is current. Alsocheck on the contractor’s insurance. Ask contrac-torsyouareconsideringfortheprojecttoshowyoutheir insurancecertification.Thencall the insurancecompany and check to ensure thepolicy is current.

4. Check the contractor’s record. Check with theBetter Business Bureau, local courts, and searchon the internet to find out if there have been anycomplaints or court cases involving the contrac-tor. Also consider performing a background check. Many companies on the internet offer this service.5.Developacleardescriptionoftheproject,includ-ing your workmanship expectations, materials andquality of materials before you discuss the projectwithacontractor.Yourabilitytobeclearandspecificallowsthecontractortoofferinformedopinionsandaccurateestimates. It is alsowise tobeopenaboutyour budget from the outset, and if the cost is amajorconcernforyou,askthecontractorsyouinter-view for their advice on how to minimize the cost.6.Askforandcheckprofessionalreferences.Askforthe contractor’s standard references, from currentprojects, as well as jobs the contractor completedrecentlythatareverysimilartoyours.Whenyoutalktothereferenceaskallthestandardquestions.Alsoaskwhatwentwrongandhowthecontractormadeitright.7. Organize your project and the interview pro-cess. Make or buy an organizer to manage thebusiness cards, literature, quotes, estimates andnotes that you will accumulate during your search.A good organizer is The Complete RemodelingWorkbookandOrganizer.Useaninterviewscriptforboth the contractor and references and a standard

list of questions that you answer after the inter-view so you can compare contractors objectively.8.Aska lotofquestionsduringthe interviewaboutthe contractor, the project and the estimate. Notonly do you need answers to specific questions, you need to evaluate your ability to communicatewith the contractor. This is also an opportunity todecidewhetheryoudoordonot trust thecontrac-tor to be in your home and around your family.9. Carefully compare and evaluate all estimates. Iusually recommend that homeowners get at least5 estimates. You will then need to compare theestimates, including all the details, in order todecidewho tohire.Ensure thatallof theestimatesreflect the same workmanship, finished work, qual-ity of materials, and schedule. If you are havingdifficulty comparing estimates, ask the contractorto help you make the comparison. If a contrac-tor isn’t helping you with this, then he/she prob-ably is not the right one for you to work with.10.Getagoodcontract.Getacontractthatisbasedonthetotalfinalcostoftheproject(notanestimate).Becertainthateverythingisincludedinthecontract.Samplecontractscanbefoundontheinternet.Ifanychanges from the details in the contract are madeduringtheworkprocess, ensurethatallchangesandcostsareputinwritingwithachangeorder.

saboardcertifiedorthopaedicsurgeonpracticing in the greater metro-politan Atlanta area, I, along

with my fellow partners of PinnacleOrthopaedics, treat literally thou-sands of patients on an annualbasis. One of the reasons thatmany of us chose a career inorthopaedicsurgery is that thisparticular area of medicineallowsustohaveapositiveandrelatively quick impact on ourpatient’slives.Althoughwecan-notfixeveryinjury,themajorityof treatment options availableusually allow us to reduce ourpatient’s pain and improve theirfunction, even when a definitivecureisnotpossible.

Unfortunately, as many of my readersare aware, the experience of sustaining anorthopaedicinjury,suchasbreakingabone,isnotapleasantone.However,themajorityoftheseinju-riescanbeeffectivelytreated;usuallyhealingwithin6-8weeks.Somebrokenbonesdorequiresurgery,butthemajoritycanoftenbetreatedeffectivelywith

A casts, braces, and/or activitymodification. The big-

gest mistake that Isee patients with

injuries make isthattheydonot

see an ortho-paedistwhentheyfirstsus-pect a seri-ous injury.If you or aloved onesustains as ign i f i can t

injury thatdoes not start

toimprovewith-in 48-72 hours,

then you shouldstart to be concerned

that it may be serious. What you may not realize is

t h a t broken bones, for example, will usuallyheal with or without appropriate treatment. Theproblem, however, isthatwhentheyarelefttohealon theirown, theycanheal in improperpositions

whichleadstolifelongproblems.Thus,theneedforappropriatetreatmentiscritical.

Inadditiontofixingbrokenbones,orthopaedicsur-geons treat a varietyof injuries affecting theotherimportantpartsofthemusculoskeletalsystem,suchasmuscles,ligaments,andtendons.Justlikebrokenbones,theseinjuriescanbeverypainful,andifnotproperlytreated,canresultinasignificantdecreaseinone’squalityoflife.Fortunatelyforourpatients,just likebrokenbones, theoverwhelmingmajorityoftheseinjuriescanbeeffectivelytreatedinarela-tivelytimelymanner.Again,thekeyistonotdelayseekingappropriatetreatment.

So although a visit to your orthopaedist may be atrip you prefer to put off, you should rememberthatwecanoftenhave youbackonyour feet andparticipatinginallofyourfavoriteactivitiessoonerthanyouthink.Sodon’tbeafraidtotaketheroadlesstraveled–seekingtimelyandappropriatetreat-ment of your injury will help youget back to enjoying this journeycalledlife.

Don’t Be a Chicken: We Sure Could Use a Little Good NewsBy J. L. Wilson

verywhere we turn there are reports of gloom and doom. Negative information is all around us and I can’t help but surmise that the main-

street media just might enjoy the sensationalism of sending the American public into a frenzy. Why do we listen to them? They seem to grab onto and twist any hint of trouble, economic or not, and escalate it into a destructive monster.

In contrast, Forbes Magazine reported in November of 2008 that Metro Atlanta was among the top ten areas in the country that would experience the beginning of continued economic recovery in 2009. They called us a “lucky city.” In addition, The Atlanta

B u s i n e s s Chronic le reported in December

ninth to be exact. We need

these messages

of hope in the forefront, giving people courage. This positive information is ignored. Instead, the naysayers continue to broadcast as Chicken Little, declaring “The sky is falling!” How do we respond? Unfortunately, we take it to heart.

Take, for instance, the gas crunch we watched unfold this past fall. Reports left citizens in fear that there would be no fuel. Our response was to panic and stand in ridiculous lines to top off our tanks at insanely inflated gas prices. People were agitated and for many, it was every man for himself.

It was not always that way. As horrific as the terrorist attack was on our country on 9/11, there was a great deal of good that surfaced. For a long time following there was a unique camaraderie among us fellow Americans. The petty little things failed to matter, and we pulled together, bruised and broken, and appreciated our loved ones and neighbors who all shared in our grief. People were kinder on the roads and there was an overall willingness to help one another. Where is that sentiment now?

What can we do?

First, let’s all relax, take a deep breath and access the situations we are facing and make wise decisions. Be slow to anger, slow to be offended. Acknowledge that there is much that is beyond our control and

trust God to see us through it. We have a choice in the way we handle adversity. Pray.

Think positive. Find a silver lining. Share good news. Agree to not harp on or spread unnecessary worry. Be thankful. Listen to uplifting music. Refuse to get depressed. Happiness is healthy.

Reach out. Know that there are a lot of people who are truly hurting. Help them out. Just a small gesture of concern can go a long way. If you are flourishing in this economy, be generous, not because someone is forcing you to, but because you genuinely want to help your neighbor. If you have never experienced the joy of giving, try it. If you are suffering financial-ly, physically or emotionally still find ways to make a difference. There are always others less fortunate and it certainly can be beneficial to get your mind off your own problems. There is tremendous bless-ing in giving.

Move forward. Don’t be paralyzed by fear. If you are prone to absorb the negative reports of the media and apply them to your lives, turn off the news. Ignore pessimistic reports and articles. Our country came out of the Great Depression by making deci-sions to move forward. We are Americans. By the grace of God we perservere.

Now that is something to crow about.

hen it comes to the undertaking of any home interior décor project, success in creating the correct color balance is a vital

part of any rewarding enterprise. The colors that you finally decide on often reflect your personality. It is therefore best to be aware of your response to differ-ent colors before choosing them for your proposed home interior decorating project. Here are nine more things that for you to consider about home interior decorating.

W

• To add to the success of your decorating project it is important that you start with a plan. This does not mean that you should know exactly everything that you wish to do in advance. It helps however to have a general outline of what you wish to achieve in your room(s).

• You need to find styles that conform to your tastes. A way to do this is to go through maga-zines and catalogues and tear out pictures and illustrations that you like. When you have a stack of pages, search for common themes that inter-est you. You may realize for example the pictures you have been saving show rooms that have col-ored walls or that many have certain patterns or similar decoration.

• Good lighting is the key to your home interior decorating success. Lighting is a great way to cre-ate mood and atmosphere. Some different types of lighting are ambient, task and decorative,

scented candles can bring additional ambience to your rooms. Well-designed lighting can also lead to an improvement in our general well-being. Successful lighting schemes need to be planned at the beginning of your home interior decorating project. This will enable wiring to be installed in the rooms of your home before you start your decorating.

• Choose the furniture that is most suitable for you and your home and try to avoid poor furniture arrangements. For example walking in a room where all the furniture is lined up against the wall. This arrangement makes your room look smaller so avoid doing it. The best way to avoid this error is never to place an upholstered item against a wall.

• Selecting the right curtains for your home is an

AROUND OUR TOWN - HOme DecOR

Interior Decorating: What to Consideressential in any home interior improvement. It helps to have a clear grasp and understanding of how curtains are made and fitted. This will then help you to avoid unnecessary mistakes and expenses.

• Flooring is important for function and furnish-ings and therefore should be chosen with both in mind. Floor coverings can be wood, tile or car-pet and should be of the same color or a darker shade than the walls.

• It is essential to have space or free zones within your rooms. Clutter has a way of erasing the desired mood and energy of any room. It does not matter the type of belongings you have, you need to have some surfaces that are free of para-phernalia especially window-sills. To enjoy fully your personal belongings and treasures there need to be, intermittent empty areas to balance the accessorized areas.

• Rooms need accessories as they add color, scale, drama, individuality and atmosphere to them. Your accessories should be artifacts or items that you cherish and add deftness to your room deco-ration. Interesting pieces can be picked up at flea markets and craft shows

• Plants, trees and flora, will achieve balance in filling spaces in the room. Use trees or plants to fill emptied corners or walls. Try placing ivy and flora to match your furnishings these will give a final touch to your room.

child’s intake of these important foods. Parentsoftenaskmeiftheyshouldgivetheirchildvitaminsto enhance their immune system. I always say yes–intheformoffruitsandvegetables!Nomanufac-turedvitamincancomeclosetocapturingthenutri-tional goodness in produce. Fruits and vegetablesare important sourcesofpotassium, iron, calcium, andfiberaswellasvitamins.Thepigmentsthatgivefresh produce such lovely and varied colors alsohaveanti-oxidant andanti-inflammatorypropertiesthathavebeenshowntobehelpfulinfightingheartdiseaseandcancers.Allthat,packagedinalowcalo-rie,cholesterol-freetastymorsel!

Most American children do not eat the recom-mended intake of fruits and vegetables. The mostcommonlyconsumedvegetableintheUnitedStatesisthewhitepotato,primarilyintheformofaFrenchfry.Whilethepotatoitselfisactuallyquitenutritious(itisanexcellentsourceofVitaminC),theprocess-ing and frying needed to turn it into fry moves itfirmly into the junk food category. What a terriblethingtodotoavegetable!

Children from4 to8 yearsneed1½cupsof veg-etables and 1-1 ½ cups of fruit a day. Children

W from 9-18 years need 2-3 cups of vegetable and 1½-2cupsoffruitaday(seewww.mypyramid.govforspecifics).While itmay seemdaunting toget yourvegetable-hatertofallinline,itisjustasimportantforaparentto insistupongoodeatinghabitsas itistoinsistuponseatbelts.Hopefully, thefollowingsuggestionswillhelp:

1. Set a good example by increasing your ownintakeofproduce.

2. Buy fresh produce in season. It will generallybecheaperandwillusuallytastebetter.Anyonewho has eaten a strawberry in December willagree!

3. Letyourchildsuggestnewfruitsandvegetablesto try. Encourage them to choose a variety ofcolorsand“eattherainbow”.

4. Depending upon age let your child help withfood preparation. Studies have shown that achild is more likely to eat a new food if theyhaveparticipatedincookingit.

5. Trytoserve2servingsoffruitatbreakfastand2-3servingsoffruitsorvegetablesatlunchanddinner.Forexample,serveacupoforangejuiceand cereal with sliced banana or strawberriesfor breakfast, a turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, andcucumberalongwithanappleandcarrot sticks (with low-fat dressing) for lunch,

enerally speaking, fast weight loss is notrecommended as part of anyone’s regu-lar diet. But if you wish to lose weight

and stay healthy doing so, here are a few tipsthat will help you better understand the rightfood interactions and how your body processestohelpyou loseweightquickly inahealthierway.Water - Water is our friend and is healthy forall of us. Think of water as being a catalyst inlosing weight. It has empty calories and is alsoan appetite suppressant. Water will help keepyour stomach full, and work to metabolize storedfat by flushing out waste. By keeping water inyour system, you are always flushing your bodyof toxins and waste our body does not need.Fiber – Eating food that are rich in fiber helps tokeep everything moving the way it should. Likewater, fiber rich foods make us feel full longer.Fiber is found in foods like potatoes, broccoli, beans, bran, nuts, chickpeas, apples, strawber-ries and figs. These types of foods that are richin fiber help cut calories by attaching to other fatand proteins in foods you eat with the fiber, andremoving them in the body’s elimination process.Good Fat-Thereisgoodfatandthereisbadfat.Thegood fatswill give you the essential fatty acids for

healthy growth and reproduction. This also assistsinproducingprotoglandin, acompoundinthebodythat regulates blood pressure, thus lowering therisksassociatedwithheartdisease.Agoodsourceofgettinglinoleicacids,agoodfat,arefromthefattyacidsfoundinfoodslikemackerel,salmon,sardinesandherring.Gettingupto3portionsoftheseoilyfishaweekwillaidyoursysteminburningfatmoreeffectively and also protect you against disease.Protein - Getting quality protein from chicken, fish, shrimp, low fat yogurt and cottage cheese, skimmed milk and egg whites will help balancecarbohydratesbyhelping toprevent insulin spikesthatcauserapidenergylossandcravingsforsugar.Carbohydrates - Carbohydrates can actually helpyou lose weight. By staying away from processedfoods that have carbohydrates and concentrat-ing on good carbohydrates from whole grains, fruits and vegetables; these whole food sourceswill aid in losing weight when eaten in mod-eration. Your body burns more calories digest-ing these foods than their processed equivalents.Eating Regularly - To lose weight quickly andeffectively without risking your health, you willactually be eating five times a day in smaller por-tions. Breakfast really is the most important meal

of the day. By eating breakfast in the morning, your body will be better equipped to avoid pangsof hunger later throughout the day. Don’t overeatand pay attention to the total calories consumed.Therearesomeveryrealhealthrisksassociatedwithlosingweighttooquicklybynoteatingproperlyandskippingmeals.Whenyoudepriveyourbodyofwhatitneeds,youareessentiallyleavingyourselfopentoahostofissues,nottomentioncompromisingyourbody’snatural immunesystem.Byeating therightfoodsregularlyintherightproportions, youwillnotonlyfeelbetter, youwillbehealthierforit.

re you a catowner? Was theresomething about

yourcatwhenyoupickedheroutthatdrewyoutoher? I own a cat namedPepper that I pickedout of a litter when shewasn’t even a full dayold. I know what you’rethinking; what can youtell about a little kittenwho doesn’t even haveher eyes open? I’m notreally sure, butwhateveritwasthatmademepickPepper, itworked.

Thereare several studiesthat have been done totest if there’s a relation-ship between cats andtheirowners’interactionswithotherhumans.Specifically, doesowningacatelicit compassion towards animals and then trans-late intobeingmore compassionate toward fellowhumans? An Australian study conducted at Central

QueenslandUniversityprovedsuchalinkdoesexist.

Another study conducted at theUniversity of Pennsylvania lookedat whether having a pet as a childwould make one more compas-sionate towards both animals andhumans as adults. The results con-cludedthatchildrenwhohadstrongrelationshipswiththeircatsordogsas children had more humane atti-tudes toward animals and humansas adults. It also showed childrenwho had pets growing up and hadstrong relationships with them, developed more positive relation-shipswithpeopleinadulthood.

Why is it that cats, in particular, bring out our compassion? I knowas a catowner, that I can tellwhatPepper is trying to say by the tone

ofhervoice, herfacialexpressionsandherposture. It’s like having an infant that can’t speak, but asyou get to know her, you start to understand hermoods and needs. Developing this sense of your

pet’sneedsandmoodscouldverywellallowyoutobetter“read”othersasadults.

There’s something about cats and puppies thatmakes us want to nurture them. They’re soft, small, cuddly and provide love. They bring forthcompassion in us naturally. Studies have proventhisistruemoreforwomen, maybebecauseoftheinnate maternal instinct inside. Although for menwho had strong relationships with their dogs orcatsaschildren, theytooshowedmorecompassionin future relationships than thosewhodidn’thavepets.Whateveritis, thecompassionshowntowardsanimalsdoestranslate intoshowingmorecompas-sion toward our fellow human beings, which is apositivething.

Most of the studies were directed towards catsbecausetheydon’tgrowtoasizethattheycan’tstillbepickedupandheld. For thosewhohaveneverconsideredcatstobringanyvaluetousorsocietyingeneral,youmaywanttoreconsider.Theymayjustbehelpingustotreateachotheralittlebetter.

Our covergirl, Daisy, is enjoying her favor-

ite Dachsund squeek toy that she certainly

knows how to use! She is quite tenacious

for her size.

This adorable orange-eyed “Persian

Chocolate” is named Garth. He is loaded

with personality and gets quite full of

himself just after he gets his “lion-cut”

grooming.

Covergirl Payton is a beautiful Great Dane and still quite the pup! She is rambunc-tious, but smart and loves playing with sister Daisy.
