Four Generations Born and Raised in Paulding County(Back, l-r) Cindy, Shirley, & Michelle

(Front, l-r) Callaway, Ms. Ruth & Cassidy

racing our cover this month are four generations of beautiful women and girls, all born and raised in Paulding County! The weather out-side was unseasonably cold and windy, so we had to move indoors.

However, it worked out great and we had a marvelous time getting to know the wonderful women of all ages in this family.

Ms. Ruth Griffin is 87 years young. She is a life-long resident of Paulding County, and is a mother of three, grandmother of six and a great-grand-mother of eight! Ms. Ruth is such a beautiful lady, so we had to ask what her secret was. She told us that every day she drinks a cup of apple cider vinegar with honey. She mixes the vinegar with water, adds the honey, then warms it just a touch. Her daughter and grand-daughters drink it too. It was truly an honor to spend time with her.

Her daughter is Shirley Fields. Shirley is also a life-long resident of Paulding County, and has two daughters, Michelle and Cindy, along with five grand-children.

Michelle Cason and her husband Rob reside in Paulding County with their two daughters, Cassidy and Callaway. Cassidy is 11 and Callaway is 7, and are the youngest generation.

Cindy Davis and her husband Corrie have three boys, Taylor age 17, Tanner age 11, and Trace age 5. They also live in Paulding County.

Shooting this Mother’s Day cover was pure joy. We wish Ms. Ruth, Shirley, Michelle, and Cindy a very Happy Mother’s Day! We appreciate all of them, including Cassidy and Callaway for welcoming us into their home and let-ting us share them with you!

oucertainlyhaveafeelingofgreatabundancewhen you see plant-packed containers onyourdeck, patioor in your garden. There is

nothing like container gardens to link the indoorsand outdoors between home and garden. Today,we all want to seeout outdoor spaceturned into a won-derful new additiontoourhomes.

After choosing theright planters, potsand containersfrom a wide rangeof materials, styles, colorsandsizes, thetimeisrighttothinkabout what you aregoing to put in theplanters and wheretoplacethem.

Youcanuse yourplanters, urnsandpots inmanyareas.Thinkaboutwheretheywouldbebest–tosetoffyourdoorwayordeckentrance, tohideunsightlyutility areas or storage spaces, or to show off thebestviewsonyourdeck, gardenorpatio.Youcanmove your containers around to capture the after-noon shade, provide protection from wind and to

avoidthoseextremehotspotsinsummerheat.Doplantoenjoythosefragrantplantsandalwayshavethemclosetoyourseatingareas,ortobrushagainstnexttowalkways.Aruleofthumb,buylargerplant-ers than you think youmayneed, small littlepotswill get lost in the space and never achieve thatWOWlookinthearea.

Weknowthatweneedtoplantcontainersproperlyand of course to water when needed. Now to getstarted!Pickcontainers thatwillhandlethesizeofthe plants you are considering. You can contrastlarge and small containers together for a stunningeffect.Annualsandbulbsareverypopularchoicesforpotsandplanters.

Whenyouareready toplant, fill thecontainers towithinabout three inches fromthe topandgentlyfirmdownthesoil.Settheplantsyouhavechosenandplaceontopofthesoilandthenstepbackandvisualizehowtheywill lookwhentheyfilloutandcreateanoverallview.Containersthatwillsitnexttoawallorfencepositionthetallestplantsatthebackoftheplanterandsurroundwithotherplants.Whenyouhavelargecontainersorwhentheywillbeseenfromallsides,setthetallestplantsinthemiddleandsurroundwiththeotherplants.

Onceyouarepleasedwith the temporaryarrange-ment,digoutholeswithyourtroweloryourhands

and set the plants in place. Gently firm the soilaround each plant. Be sure to leave three inchesfromthe topof thepot toallow forproperwater-ing.Whenplanting,agoodtipistomakesurethattherootsoftheplantsareverydamporwetbeforeplanting. Then water your container thoroughlywhenyouhavecompletedyourarrangement.

Nowisthetimetomoveyourgardenplantersandcontainerstocreatetheoveralllookthatyouwouldlike to achieve in the chosen space. It is always agood idea to keep the sun loving plants togetherand separate from the shading loving ones. Don’tmakeanycombination toouprightor toosprawly, haveagoodmixofboth–onewillenhancethelookoftheother.

Mixlargecontainerswiththesmallones,arrangeingroupings.Placeoneortwoonplantstandstocre-ateafocalpointinyourarrangement.Youmaywishtocruisearoundyourneighborhood,gotogardencenters or even view the latest magazines to dosomecreativestealingformoredesignideas.

pring is a sign of renewal in many areas ofour lives, and our homes are no different! There is something energizing and refresh-

ing about bringing that bright, airy feeling ofSpring into your home. Here are some ways tospruce up and revitalize your rooms, on a dime!

S

• Add white! White with your present colorscheme will both cool and brighten, addingthefreshnessthatonlywhitecan!Ifyourroomcolorstendtowardthewarmside,suchasyel-lows, browns, or reds...then choose creamierwhitesuchasecruorivory.Ifyouhavecoolercolorsinyourroom,suchasgreensandblues,gowiththebrighter,cleanerwhites.

• Try painting your focal wall, (that is, theone most seen) in a sunnier, brighter, orlightershadeofyourcurrentwallcolor.Itwilladd lightness to the room without drasticallychangingthewholescheme.Don'tworry, youcanalwaysgobacktothatrichredinthefall, buthowaboutalittlepetalpink, orskyblue?Remember, itsonlypaint, itscheap!

• Pickupsomeprettycoloredglasswarefromthedollarshop,anddisplay itwhere thesunwilllightitup!Youcouldevenuseclearglassware,andfillitwithcoloredwatertocoordinatewiththeroom.Useyourglasswareasvases,pencil

holders, orcandydishes, butmakesureitisseen!Glass sparkles and adds a bit of sunshine to aroom.

• Takedownyourcurtains, andjust leave your mini blindsunderneath. Don’t leave itbare, though, wedon’twantboring! Swag some dried orsilk flowers over the top oftheblinds,orusesomemus-lin to twist around a curtainrod for an informal but airyvalance.(Nosew!)

• Keepyourwindowssparklingclean. Dirty windows cutdownonasurprisingamountof light, and make a roomlook dull. As a bonus, cleanwindows mean more spar-kling glass, and that makesroom feel larger and bright-er!

• Potupsomepansiesfromthegardencenterandusethemindoorsashouseplants.Theyarecheap,easy,andaddflowerstoaroomwithoutthecostofreplacingfloralarrangementseveryweek!Youcanevencoordinatetheflowercolortothecolor

schemeoftheroom.Don'tmatchthecolors,justpicksomethingcomplementary.

• Clearmostoftheartworkandaccessories out of your room, andjustkeepafewlarger,simplerpieces.Itde-clutterstheroom,andhelpstoput the focus on the freshness of aroom.• Finally, don'tforgetyourentryarea when you are creating thatspring glow all around your home.Remember, yourentriesareavisitor’sfirst impression of your home! Addapotofpansieson theporch, paintyour entry a fresh spring color, andhangahandmadewreathorabasketofflowersonthefrontdoor.

By D. Hodari Brooks, MD

s a board certified orthopedic surgeon prac-ticing in the greater Atlanta area I am asked lots of questions by my patients on a daily

basis. Today I wanted to take the time to address one of the more common questions that I have been getting recently. This question can have many forms but in general the question is: “Doctor, I know that I have arthritis but can I, and should I still exer-cise?” It is apparent to me that there is a fair amount of confusion in the lay press and even on the internet regarding the risks and benefits of exercise. Let’s take this question in two parts:

The first part of this question relates to whether a person with arthritis CAN exercise. Now, like all medical questions, the answer is both simple and complex at the same time. The simple answer is a definitive YES. Regardless of a person’s degree of arthritis they can usually perform some type of exercise. In general if arthritis involves the joints of the lower extremity, i.e. the hips, knees, and ankles then these individu-als should focus primarily on low impact exercises. Examples include the elliptical, stationary bike, and Nordic track. This is important in order to limit the impact on the knees and hips in particular. This

doesn’t mean that you have to completely give up your treadmill or running program, however, it does mean you should give strong consideration to modifying your exercise program. If you have a milder degree of arthritis then you can still perform high impact activities, however, my recommenda-

tion is that you reduce your frequency of impact exercises and add more non-impact activities. It is true that as a patient’s arthritis progresses their ability to perform aggressive exercises decreases. These individuals usually do best with aquatic therapy which sig-nificantly limits the stress on all joints. There does come a point, however, when the arthritis becomes so severe that any type of exercise becomes extremely difficult. It is at this point that patients should consider joint replacement surgery to help restore their quality of life.

The second portion of this question relates to whether a patient with arthritis SHOULD exercise. Again the answer is a definitive YES. There are clear benefits of exercise regardless of whether you have arthritis or not. In general the reason that exercise is so beneficial is that it allows individuals to strength-en their muscles around the joints. The effect of this is to decrease the force that your joints have to be

exposed to during a particular activity. By decreasing the forces on your joints you can often decrease the speed at which your arthritis progresses and impor-tantly decrease the pain you experience with every-day activities. In addition to benefiting your muscles and joints, exercise also has a clear benefit on the health of your heart. It is important to add, however, that if your overall health is not very good then you need to check with your primary care physician to discuss whether you are healthy enough to engage in a physical exercise program.

Thus it is both acceptable and desirable to exercise even if you have arthritis. Certainly the relative severity of an individual’s arthritic disease will have an effect on just how successful an exercise program can be. It is my experience that virtually all patients feel better if they can exercise. So I encourage all of my readers to commit to getting involved in a personal exercise program for 2009. I know you will feel better, and your joints will too.

ead lice have been an issue for people since the beginning of time. Even ancient Egyptians, Aztec Indians and our founding fathers dealt

with this pesky parasite. While lice are not dangerous and don’t carry diseases, they are contagious and can be difficult to treat. For this reason, many schools have a strong policy against attending school with an active case of head lice. Hopefully, this article will help parents understand this very common prob-lem.

Every year, millions of kids get head lice. These tiny insects live on human hair. They stay near the scalp where they can feast on tiny bits of human blood. While their bite does not hurt, it can make the scalp itchy and irritated. A louse is about the size of a sesame seed. It has six legs and no wings. Their eggs, called nits are laid on the hair shaft close to the scalp. The louse uses a glue-like substance to stick the nit firmly onto the hair. Each louse lays about 8 eggs per day. That is 240 eggs per month which is their typi-cal life span for a louse. The nits are small yellowish brown ovals attached to the hair. Once the louse hatches, the nit appears clear or white.

Lice do not jump or fly. They are passed from person to person on things like hats, brushes, clothing and pillows. They are most commonly found on girls

from ages 3 to 12 years old. However, lice can live on anyone’s head, all ages and races. They like clean hair as well as dirty hair. Therefore, good hygiene will not prevent lice. The best prevention is not shar-ing things that touch the head like hats, hair brushes and pillows. Head to head contact during play or a hug is a great way to spread lice.

Head lice can be treated in several ways. Effective treatments kill the adult lice and the nits. Over-the-counter and prescription insecti-cides are available. Read the instructions carefully as some of these treatments are so flammable that using a hair dryer can be dangerous. Because these products are poisonous, it is not recommended to use them on children under age 3 or on pregnant women. Since nits cannot be washed off, a nit comb is needed to remove them from the hair. There are products available to loosen the gluey substance attaching the nit to the hair. Re-treatment of the hair in 7 to 10 days is recommended to kill any newly hatched lice.

To prevent recurrence, the lice must also be removed from belongings. Bedding, hats and stuffed animals should be washed with hot water. Hair brushes and

combs should be washed with the lice insecticide.

The floor and upholstery should be vacuumed. Items

that cannot be washed can be tied up in a plastic garbage bag for about 10 days. The lice can-not live away from a warm human head for very long.

There are alternative treatments for those who wish to avoid toxic

insecticides. These methods may not be as effective but are safer and worth a try. Zinc and sulfur are ingredients found in

some natural remedies. One source recommended Cetaphil cleanser applied to the hair liberally then blown dry. The idea is to shrink wrap the hair and thereby suffocate the lice. Vinegar and mayonnaise have been reported to help loosen the nits. The key to success is the complete removal adults lice and nits. If you need help coping with a stubborn case of lice, see your doctor for assistance.

he Gulf Coast, without a doubt, has some of the most beautiful white sand beaches and crystal blue waters. Destin, Florida is no exception. This

treasure on the panhandle has everything to make a vacation perfect, pre-sented with ample class and charm.

Another mom and I had the priviledge of tak-ing six teenage boys to Destin for Spring Break last month. It is always an unsettling mystery arriving at a condo that you have never stayed in, hoping it meets your expectations. We stayed at Crystal View condos, VRBO 157436. It was incredible! This well-decorated, three bedroom, three bath unit was so roomy and had breathtaking ocean-front views with a wrap around balcony. I’ll be honest and confess that, if I am going to put forth the time and effort to travel to the beach, I want to stay on the water!

The deep living area of this condo was spaceous with ten foot ceilings, allowing our party great fellowship opportu-nity. This space included a large, open kitchen with all the

conveniences of home. (teenage boys love kitchens!) During the day we raised the shades of the windows throughout the

great room, revealing a panaramic view of the vast blue water.

We adults took the master suite, of course, which also sported ten foot ceilings and a balcony that overlooked the beach. The master bath was enormous, complete with a garden tub for relaxing in a long bath. Our favorite perk in the master suite was the king-size mattress. It slept better than any bed I have been in. In fact, I turned up the mattress cover and made note of the brand and model before I left. I want to find one just like it.

There is a heated swimming pool on the property and the building is located in a great area of Destin. We were a short drive from the finest

outlet stores and walking distance from several great restaurants. We could see “Pompano Joes” from our balony and decided to walk and eat there for dinner one evening. Aside from the long wait, even on a week night, the restaurant lived up to it’s reputation of having delicious seafood and decent portions. “The Crab Trap” is another favorite in Destin and is walking distance in the other direction. We will be sure to try it out on our next visit.

We hope you will consider Destin for your next beach vacation. Check out this condo we stayed in. See their ad on the facing page. Tell them Our Town referred you and get a special discount! You won’t be dis-appointed!

he Gulf Coast, without a doubt, has some of the most beautiful white sand beaches and crystal blue waters.

Personal Attention & Excellent Communication

War Story All the joys of a summer family holiday were not for us Londoners. No, we were at war. The Germans didn’t want us to have a vacation, so they gave us the gift of air raids instead, especially when the full moon lit the skies. Since childhood years enjoy life even with ruins everywhere around us, my gift was that I was fourteen years old, the youngest in the family, still with my mother and especially near to her. Then something wonderful happened! A relative in Devonshire wrote my mother to come for a visit, and - oh yes, bring that young daughter (me) out of London for one week. So we took a train hoping that the Germans wouldn’t notice us leaving town. We arrived and found the quiet of Devonshire deafening! We shared a supper, country style, even some Devonshire cream made especially for us. It was the end of a long day and we went up to the bedroom we would share for a week and there was a beautiful feather bed waiting for two very tired travelers. Imagine, after sleeping upright in a corrugated tin garden shelter for years - now to sink into the feather bed was sheer heaven. Before going to sleep, I sat up in the dark feeling the amazing comfort all around me. My mother, now asleep, looked so young. All her worries had left her; especially with my brother away in the war since he was seventeen and a half. He was in the Royal Air Force, somewhere in North Africa. No, my mother was asleep and I felt so protective of her and even at this early age, so compassionate. I never wanted her to be troubled when she awakened.

Now, after all these years, I can close my eyes and feel the magic of that time and the closeness of my mother.
