HippyhIPPY was established in 1969 and operates in 13 different countries. The Brotherhood of st Laurence operates hIPPY in 75 communties in australia. This includes several aboriginal and Torres strait Islander communities, including La Perouse, alice springs, Katherine and Inala. hIPPY works well in very different communities because it is based on local community strengths and employs local staff, who understand family issues and needs.

is a free program that supports parents with

children aged 4-5 to create happy, healthy

families. Over the next few months, the

Brotherhood of St Laurence will be working

to confirm new HIPPY sites focusing on

25 Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander

communities across the country.

This fact sheet shares some information

about HIPPY, activities being conducted to

raise awareness about HIPPY and whether

you might want to apply for HIPPY in

your community.

HIPPY arranges for tutors to visit parents in

their home or community space. These tutors

demonstrate materials and activities with

parents to then enjoy with their children.

These activities are about sharing, making,

thinking and doing. HIPPY runs for 2 years.

Through HIPPY, parents will:

• Developconfidenceintheirparentingskills;

• Becomemoreinvolvedintheirchildren’slife;

• Beproudoftheirchildren’sachievements;

• Raisehappyandhealthychildrenwithapositive attitude towards learning.

The Brotherhood of St Laurence believes in

the importance of local self-determination

and agency of Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander people.

We believe that the only way to work

is through creating long term and

ongoing relationships with Aboriginal

and Torres Strait Islander people

• asequals;

• withrespectandhonesty;and

We have developed a set of principles that

we act on to ensure that we build genuine

partnerships and hold ourselves accountable

to communities for what we say we believe in.

This is what you can expect from us.

Where to now?

The Brotherhood of St Laurence is

visiting your community. This is an

opportunity for you to learn about

HIPPY,raisequestionsaboutwhat

it offers, and decide whether it is

something you think would benefit

your community. You will also be able to

look at HIPPY materials and resources.

Bring along others who would be

important in making a decision

about HIPPY in your community!

T h e P r o c e s s

You have already made it through the first stage!

things to think about:

• IsHIPPYrelevantforyourcommunity?

• IsHIPPYsuitableforyourcommunity?

• Arethereotherprogramsthatalready meettheseneeds?

• IfHIPPYcouldberelevant,whoshould runHIPPYinyourcommunity?

• Wouldthefamiliesinyourcommunity bewillingtoparticipateinHIPPY?

• Arethereanythingsliketransportthat will need to be considered to support familiestoparticipate?

We will be asking for your thoughts on whether

you think HIPPY is relevant for your community.

We will then gather that information and

provide a report to the Government.

The important factors that we will look

at is whether an organisation or group of

organisations in your community can:

• WorkcloselywithlocalAboriginaland Torres Strait Islander people, in particular parentsandfamilies;and

• Provideanearlylearningprogram,astrongmanagement structure and support for the HIPPY local coordinator and home tutors.

Selection

Based on these factors, the Government will then decide which 25 communities will get HIPPY.

The Government will let you know the outcome of this decision. The Brotherhood of St Laurence

will then undertake a provider selection process later this year.

The Australian Government has identified your community

as one of the possible new places for HIPPY.
