Dr. Law, Superintendent Board of Education, District 86 55th and Grant Streets Hinsdale, IL 60521

Dear Dr. Law and Board of Education Members:

The Hinsdale South Special Olympics has a long history of participation in the Area Regional and State Competitions. With your permission, 2014-2015 will be no different.

I am asking the District 86 Board of Education to consider and grant a request for an overnight field trip that includes one day of absence from school (the morning Friday, March 13th_ Sunday, March 15th ). Our Hinsdale South Special Olympics Black team qualified to participate at the Basketball State Competition by winning 1st Place in the regional competition in January.

No student will be denied participation in this competition due to financial reasons .

I welcome any inquiries you may have concerning participation in this Regional Tournament.

Thank you in advance for both your past support of the Hinsdale South Special Olympics Basketball as well as your consideration of this request.

Sincerely,

Kathy Craig and Adam Contreras - Special Olympics Coaches Hinsdale South High School

Special Olympics Parents,

As you are probably already aware, the Special Olympics basketball team competed in January 2015 at that competition the Black Team won a gold medal in the Division 8 competition. Since the team won a gold medal, they qualified to participate at the Special Olympics Basketball State Competition at Illinois State University March 13th - March 15th, 2015. The competition begins on Friday, and goes until Sunday. So we will leave on Friday morning, depending on the time of our first event and participate in the evening activities and then return home on Sunday, after the final activities are completed. We will be staying in a hotel in Bloomington-Normal, IL. Students will be in rooms with other students, and coaches will be in the room right next to the students.

On Friday evening all teams will participate in an Opening Ceremonies with all of the teams who have qualified to participate at the State Games. There w ill be a culminating dance/celebration on Saturday evening. We will not have exact times or dates of our games until a week before the event when all of the Regional Competitions have been completed and the Divisions can be created at the State office. As soon as that information becomes available to me, I will call and email all parents to make them aware of those times and the exact locations.

We are currently looking at the financial situation to see what needs to be collected in order for the team to have a dinner out at a nice restaurant in the area. That would help to alleviate most of the expenses for the entire weekend: at this point your child will only need to pay for any snacks or drinks they might need while on the trip. We are asking for assistance from the Hinsdale South Activities and Athletic department to cover the cost of lodging for the weekend. All of the extra activities will be paid from the Hinsdale South Special Olympics account, which received its monies from Grants and Fundraising. The lunches for the weekend are completely paid for by Special Olympics Illinois. Students may however, bring spending money if they would like to purchase souvenirs.

During the weekend, the Special Olympics Illinois has prepared some fun activities for the students to participate in at Illinois State University. Once we have a complete schedule of events and competition times, I will send that home so you can see all of the events we will be partaking in.

Now that being said, there are some important things to keep in mind. ~ This is a District 86 (Hinsdale South) activity; therefore all of the school conduct rules

apply during the entire weekend. Students who violate any rules will be subject to consequences upon returning on Monday. Each person will sign a contract stating that they would follow school rules during competition.

~ When students arrive at school to leave, they must have everything that they will need for the remaining 2 days. We will not have time to wait for parents to drop things off or to stop and pick up things at the store.

~ If your student needs to (or might need to) have any type of medicine during this time please let me know ahead of time. They are not allowed to have medicine in their personal belongings. It needs to be given to me to be distributed as needed.

~ If there is any kind of emergency, you can contact me on my cell phone or Adam Contreras on his cell phone.

~ Please make sure that each student has an emergency number (or numbers) where someone can be reached at all times during the weekend.

~ EACH STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO HAVE AN ID for security

I thank you everyone for their help in making this year 's Special Olympics Basketball team a great success. I am very proud and excited to see what will happen at the State Tournament.

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to call me. My office phone number is (630) 468-4007 or you can call Kristen Born, the dept secretary at (630) 468-4001 .
