This newsletter covers November 2017. Safety update We measure our safety performance against top tier indicators, including nuclear reportable events, environmental events, and staff and contract partner recordable injuries. It is now over eleven years since we experienced a nuclear reportable event, over eight years since our last environmental event and over one year since the last employee lost time incident. Station generation Reactor 3 has been on line since Thursday 26 October, and operated at nominal full load throughout the month. Reactor 4 has been on line since 18 August 2017, and operated at nominal full load throughout November. In June 2017 we reported the discovery of a single fuel pin defect in reactor 4. Following an extensive programme of monitoring the station has identified the location of the affected pin and is now making plans to safely remove it from the reactor. In each reactor there are 308 fuel channels; each channel consists of eight elements and each element contains 36 pins. This equates to 88,704 pins in one reactor. Station news Phoebe wins top apprentice award A big well done to Hinkley Point B’s Phoebe Lang, who was named as the power station’s Apprentice of the Year at EDF Energy’s annual apprentice graduation ceremony. Phoebe received her award from Simone Rossi, EDF Energy’s new Chief Executive Officer, at a prestigious apprentice graduation ceremony in Birmingham. As well as Pheobe, our congratulations also go to station apprentices, Lewis Partridge, Tom Stockwell, Alex Warren, Byron Phillips and Connor Locke for successfully completing their four year apprenticeship with EDF Energy.

Community news Fundraising for Breast Cancer Now Station workers continue to do their bit for charity, and in November Michelle Jones (left) and Liz Coles (right) took part in a sponsored parachute jump and raised over £2,500 for Breast Cancer Now. Since the company launched its three year charity partnership with Breast Cancer Now in October 2016, station staff and contract partners have raised over £10,000 for the popular charity. Olympic coach visits Bridgwater School A Bridgwater school didn’t pull any punches following a visit by a Great Britain Olympic boxing coach. Lee Pullen, currently on a career break from EDF Energy, took time out from training 2020 Olympic podium hopefuls to visit the town and coach 80 students from Robert Blake Science College. The visit, made possible by Hinkley Point B power station, was part of the school's increased curriculum focus on fitness and wellbeing.

The year 7, 8, 9 and 10 students were treated to a boxing demonstration by Lee and Hinkley Point B’s station director, Peter Evans, before being taught fundamental boxing principles and techniques. At the end of the session each student was given the opportunity to don the gloves and have a one on one boxing session with Lee, who in the past has coached many British boxing Olympic and World Championship medallists, including Amir Khan, Audley Harrison, Nicola Adams and Anthony Joshua. Lee and Peter were also joined by Mick Harrison, a British Army Physical Training Instructor, who put the students through their paces with a selection of circuit training activities. Claire Stokes, team leader for Creative Arts at the school, said: “It’s not every day the children get the chance to meet an Olympic coach, and on behalf of the school I would like to thank Lee, Peter and Mick for taking time out of their busy schedules to join us for the day. It was a truly enjoyable and engaging experience for both pupils and staff, and we have received some really good feedback from everyone who took part.”

Peter Evans, added: “Lee is a world class coach, and it was good he could share some of his experiences, techniques, hints and tips, on the importance of fitness and wellbeing with the workforce of tomorrow. Let’s hope the day and his presence inspired the children to become potential Olympic champions of the future. “

Hinkley Point B represented at EDF Group rugby tournament A team from Hinkley Point B recently represented the power station at an annual EDF Group rugby competition in Paris. The tournament, which celebrates the diversity of the company by bringing players from all parts of the EDF Group together, was attended by EDF

Group’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, Jean-Bernard Lévy. Congratulations to all of the station players (Kyle Prescott, Dave Webber, Karl Jarvis, Marc Paling, Peter Evans, James Sweatman and Elliot Davis) for taking part, and especially to Kyle Prescott (see right) for winning the special award for player of the tournament. Company news More women graduate from apprentice training programme EDF Energy is welcoming more and more women into its apprentice scheme, the company’s new chief executive Simone Rossi told an audience of graduating apprentices and their families. The company’s push for more women engineers to join its apprentice and graduate schemes is paying off thanks to such innovative campaigns as ‘Pretty Curious’, encouraging girls to think about where a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) could take them and which has recently partnered with Star Wars: The Last Jedi to help girls look at science in a new light Simone said: “It is very pleasing to me that we have attracted an increasing number of young women into the Generation apprenticeship scheme. This year around 35 per cent of our intake is female – far above the average for STEM apprenticeships.” The coveted ‘apprentice of the year trophy’, went to Georgina Hines from Heysham 1 power station. The Community Engagement Award went to Rachel Wills, of Sizewell B, and Rachel Pellegrinni, Hunterston B won the ‘Going the Extra Mile’ trophy. Applications for the 2018 apprentice programme is now open through the EDF Energy careers website: https://www.edfenergy.com/careers/early-careers/apprenticeships
