No,it’s been a bit cold for heat loving tomatoes so i have been holding off planting them but no longer The long range forecast is looking warmer and i will cover them with plastic pop/soda bottles You cut the bottom off the bottle and place them over the seedlings. Sort of acts like a little greenhouse I leave the top off for ventilation.
Yes,for most of us it’s time to get the tomatoes in. Perhaps you started yours indoors from seed or like many will be buying your plants from the local garden enter. If you are new to growing tomatoes or just want to learn more as they can have their challenges, you will find the information in Maries, our guide to gardening, blog,Featured plant:Tomatoes,Growing the Best Tomatoes very helpful.
When you purchase your plants it’s important to keep in mind the difference between a determinate and a indeterminate tomato Most of us grow indeterminate as we like to harvest our tomatoes all season(right up to a hard frost) but if you love to cook with tomatoes or do canning than a determinate variety may be for you Some like a combination of both.
Well, all that’s left is deciding which variety to grow and that’s the fun part Well, maybe not so fun as there are literally hundreds of varieties and if your like me you want them all! From sweet ones to tangy, large to cherry size and if you like different colors and outstanding taste, heirloom tomatoes are a must try I know our forum member, dsl, wants me to try

THE PIG CITY GARDEN CALENDARBy Daniel Marvin
WEEK of 17-23 may, ‘10
Dining, Entertainment & Lodging
What follows are some more valuable, indeed helpful to each of us as gardening hints from from Marie Iannotti of “Your Guide to
Gardening.” A true gardener by the name of Scotty Blue wrote “this one is all about tomatoes - the veggie that continues to be the most popular vegetable in the home garden The space we allocate for them in the garden is paralleled by the large space devoted to them in most seed catalogs. And rightly so. If there is any thing tastier than a tomato right off the vine that you have grown yourself,I would like to know what it is.
I’ve been going through a nasty cold stretch in my zone that has seen strawberry and some asparagus growers getting hammered by the below freezing temps My cool weather veggies fared well thanks to diligently covering them with things like floating row covers and my own make shift coverings as not even cool weather veggies can withstand below freezing temps without some help.

‘Brandying taste is supposed to be wonderful Keep in mind that even the modern hybrids will taste far superior to anything in the grocery store. Whether heirlooms or hybrids, the difference in taste of tomatoes you grow yourself and ones sitting on a grocery store shelf,well.....you know - no comparison.
Do you have a favorite variety?I’m big on ‘Gold Millions. A yellow grape tomato and does it ever live up to its name. Great producer.
Happy Gardening!

An Open Letter to the President
Dear Mr. President:
We couldn’t agree more. And the time to act is now.
Like you, we have been focused on the urgent need for fi nancial regulatory reform for some time. at is why three years ago we proposed bipartisan, sweeping reforms.
It’s been 75 years since we last overhauled our fi nancial regulations. Business supports and needs reforms. e American economic recovery depends on getting these reforms right so that businesses of all sizes can get the cash they need to create new jobs, invest in new products, and fi nd new customers.
In your speech more than two years ago at Cooper Union you said, “Our capital markets have helped us build the strongest economy in the world. ey are the source of competitive advantage for our country.” You laid out six principles for reform that we agreed with then—and still support.
Business has joined you in calling for ending “too big to fail,” protecting consumers, and bringing transparency and regulation to derivatives markets. We need to close the clear gaps in regulation, eliminate duplicative layers, and create a regulatory structure to ensure that we once again have the most vibrant, effi cient, and transparent capital markets in the world.
Unfortunately, the legislation currently pending in Congress does not achieve these goals or meet your principles.
As our predecessors did 75 years ago, we need to get these new reforms right.
ere is still time to fi x the fl aws in the legislation that Congress is considering if our leaders can set politics aside and focus on eff ective reforms. We have proposed specifi c changes to help ensure that Main Street businesses are not harmed by the pending proposals. We pledge to work with you and Congress to achieve bipartisan, comprehensive reforms. Mayor Bloomberg has pointed out that beating up on Wall Street may be good short-term politics—but not if it gets in the way of the right solutions. e American people have a right to expect us to get these reforms right.
Respectfully,
e United States Chamber of Commerce
“What Congress should be doing is what’s right for the country, not what is politically popular at the time.”
—New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, April 12, 2010

The 2010 summer season is almost here and the Cazenovia Joint Youth Recreation Summer Program is about to begin. The recreation program will see major changes for this summer. Major construction at all Cazenovia Central School District facilities necessitates moving to Lakeland Park for all activities this summer. All playground and arts and crafts activities will be held at the Park. The parking lot and drive into the park demand care while dropping off and picking up your children. For the safety of our children, please park in the lot and walk your children to the sign-in table at a table near the restrooms.
Playground and Arts and Crafts programs begin on Monday, June 28th, 2010 at Lakeland Park. Playground activities will be from 9:00am to 1:00pm. Staff coverage is from 9:00am until 1:00pm. The playground activities conclude Friday, August 6th. Swim lessons begin on Wednesday, June 30th and conclude on August 5th. Lakeland Park will be the site of swim lessons. All program activities will be closed for Monday, July 5th in observance of the Independence Day Holiday. Friday fieldtrips will be announced in order to have accurate time and fee information. When we are not choosing to be fully responsible for ourselves, we often are blaming other people or forces for the situation we are in, are expecting someone or some thing to solve a difficult problem for us, are putting off caring for ourselves in some way or we are taking on other people’s concerns, fears, pains, etc. to a degree that is unhealthy for us (and really not helpful to them). There are many situations that can result in the above ways of managing our lives, all of them understandable. However, being stuck in this place of blame, fear, giving to the point of depletion or illness, etc. only creates more difficulties and pain. Being responsible and moving forward, in however small a step you can, relieves the difficulties a bit at a time and allows for a new perspective on the situation. “Your personal reality changes as you do. When you learn and change so does your reality”. (Agartha – A Journey to the Stars by Meredith Young-Sowers).
Over the next 5 weeks, I will share thoughts on how we can be personally responsible for every aspect of ourselves. The aspects I will cover are physical, emotional, mental, energetic/spiritual (not religious) and the level that allows communication between all of these. By making decisions based on “one’s own initiative or authority” (dictionary.com definition of responsibility) in each of these areas, we will be able to function more completely as an individual and be able to offer increased and more sustainable energy to our other responsibilities without becoming out of balance.

Some Thoughts onPersonal Responsibility
We are responsible for so much each day – at home, at work, driving our cars, providing, nurturing, supporting, and the list goes on. The responsibilities we accept and the ones
we don’t, the ones that are priorities and the ones that have to wait. Responsibility involves a lot of decision making. The decisions we make regarding being responsible for our personal selves are reflected in the decisions we make when showing responsibility in our family, the groups that we are
involved in, at work and in our community. When we fully accept responsibility for ourselves, we can see the ebb and flow of life and move with it. We can accept our skills and limitations and work with them. We can recognize when we are stuck and move forward.
The Cazenovia Joint Youth Recreation consists of the Village of Cazenovia and the towns of Cazenovia, Fenner, and Nelson. All families who reside in these towns and the Cazenovia Central School District are welcome. The program can accommodate children with typical abilities and needs. Special needs children will be included to the fullest we can staff. All children must have completed kindergarten. The program continues due to the strong support of these municipalities and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
Registration will be at Lakeland Park. Hours will be 5:00-6:30pm on Thursday, June 10th and from 10:30am – 12 noon on Saturday, June 12th. The fee for Summer, 2010 is $50.00. Registration must be in person for legal reasons and to ensure appropriate swim class enrollment and playground activities. Parents or legal guardians must complete and sign forms for legal reasons. Registrations will be accepted throughout the summer. Information handouts will be distributed to all classes at Burton Street School. In accordance with Cazenovia School Policy, flyers will be available at Green Street School. Look for reminders in your child’s backpack!
Registration for the playground and arts and crafts is open throughout the sessions. Swim class registration will continue until July 7th for American Red Cross certification. Registration is on a first come/ first serve basis for the Monday/ Wednesday session and the Tuesday/Thursday session. We will attempt to provide swim lessons for all children in one session.

“We’re very interested in frequent sampling at this early period of development,” she added.
Donovan also would like to learn how bacteria in the gut differ in formula- and breast-fed babies, and this technique should make that possible. “Now we’ll be able to get a
complete picture of what’s happening in an infant -- from the composition of the diet to the microbes in the gut and the genes that are activated along the way.”
Of potential clinical importance: The gene expressed most often in breast-fed infants is involved in the cell’s response to oxygen deprivation. Lack of oxygen is a factor in the development of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a kind of gangrene of the intestine that can be fatal in premature babies. NEC is a leading cause of disease and death in neonatal intensive care units, with a reported 2,500 cases occurring annually in the United States and a mortality rate of 26 percent.
The study will appear in the June 2010 issue of the American Journal of Physiology, Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology. Co-authors are Robert S. Chapkin, Chen Zhao, Ivan Ivanov, Laurie A. Davidson, Jennifer S. Goldsby, Joanne R. Lupton, and Edward R. Dougherty, all of Texas A&M University, Rose Ann Mathai and Marcia H. Monaco of the U of I, and Deshanie Rai and W. Michael Russell of Mead Johnson Nutrition. The study was funded by Mead Johnson Nutrition.
Understanding those differences should help formula makers develop a product that is more like the real thing, she said. The scientists hope to develop a signature gene or group of genes to use as a biomarker for breast-fed infants.
Many of the differences found by the scientists were in fundamental genes that regulate the development of the intestine and provide immune defense for the infant.
In this small proof-of-concept study, Donovan used a new technique patented by Texas A&M colleague Robert Chapkin to examine intestinal gene expression in 22 healthy infants -- 12 breast-fed, 10 formula-fed.
The technique involved isolating intestinal cells shed in the infants’ stools, then comparing the expression of different genes between the two groups. Mothers in the study collected fecal samples from their babies at one, two, and three months of age. Scientists were then able to isolate high-quality genetic material, focusing on the RNA to get a gene expression or signature.
Donovan said that intestinal cells turn over completely every three days as billions of cells are made, perform their function, and are exfoliated. Examining the shed cells is a noninvasive way to examine intestinal health and see how nutrition affects intestinal development in infants.
Understanding early intestinal development is important for many reasons, she said.
“An infant’s gut has to adapt very quickly. A new baby is coming out of a sterile environment, having received all its nutrients intravenously through the placenta. At that point, babies obviously must begin eating, either mother’s milk or formula.
“They also start to become colonized with bacteria, so it’s very important that the gut learns what’s good and what’s bad. The baby’s body needs to be able to recognize a bad bacteria or a bad virus and fight it, but it also needs to recognize that even though a food protein is foreign, that protein is okay and the body doesn’t want to develop an immune response to it,” she said.
If anything goes wrong at this stage, babies can develop food allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, and even asthma.
Why Is Breast Milk Best? It’s All in the Genes
ScienceDaily.com (May 12, 2010) — Is breast milk so different from infant formula? The ability to track which genes are operating in an infant’s intestine has allowed University of Illinois scientists to compare the early development of breast-fed and formula-fed babies. They say the difference is very real.
“For the first time, we can see that breast milk induces genetic pathways that are quite different from those in formula-fed infants. Although formula makers have tried to develop a product that’s as much like breast milk as possible, hundreds of genes were expressed differently in the breast-fed and formula-fed groups,” said Sharon Donovan, a U of I professor of nutrition.
Although both breast-fed and formula-fed babies gain weight and seem to develop similarly, scientists have known for a long time that breast milk contains immune-protective components that make a breast-fed infant’s risk lower for all kinds of illnesses, she said.
“The intestinal tract of the newborn undergoes marked changes in response to feeding. And the response to human milk exceeds that of formula, suggesting that the bioactive components in breast milk are important in this response,” she noted.
“What we haven’t known is how breast milk protects the infant and particularly how it regulates the development of the intestine,” she said.

The husband who wants a happy marriage should learn to keep his mouth shut and his checkbook open. -- Groucho Marx
The most happy marriage I can imagine to myself would be the union of a deaf man to a blind woman. -- S. T. Coleridge
The only one of your children who does not grow up and move away is your husband.

There’s a way of transferring funds that is even faster than electronic banking. It’s called marriage. -- James Holt McGavran
