What is Namaste?- Namaste is a Sanskrit word that

means “I bow to you.”- Namaste is a way of greeting others with respect.- For Hindus, it is a divine blessing that honours the sacredness and equality of the other.

The Gestures of Namaste- Greeting someone using Namaste

also includes body gestures:- Arms are bent upward from the elbow- Palms are together as in prayer and in front of the chest- As the word “Namaste” is spoken, bow slightly from the waist

- Is the most common form of Hindu worship

- It can involve worshipping one, or multiple deities

- Hindus believe that there is only one God (Brahman), but, that this Being has many different forms

- Most Hindu families have a place of worship or shrine in their home

- The shrine is decorated with a MURTI, which is the image of the deity being worshipped

- Before the worshippers enter the room, they remove their shoes

- Then the MURTI is washed and decorated with garlands or flower petals

- The worshippers make an offering of fruit or sweets to the deity

- And finally, the worshiper may put his or her hands over the lamp flame, and then touch their forehead, as a sign that they’re receiving the deity’s blessing

Puja- Puja can also take place at the MANDIR, or Hindu temple

- Temple services involve the singing of MANTRAS (sacred sounds, words or phrases)
