1. INTRODUCTION.

HIMAYA is an acronym from Swahili language “Hifadhi Mazingira Yakutunze” which translated from Swahili stands for “Care for Environment, it will care for you”

HIMAYA is a community based environmental and development organization aiming to assist the society in environmental conservation and poverty reduction in the rural community of Karagwe District. Among other things, Himaya focuses on sensitizing the community members on the essence of preserving the nature.

Agro-forestry and mixed cropping practices being part of the agenda, a large number of different tree varieties has been planted and the exercise goes on. Tree planting programe involves community members and students from different schools who are being trained in tree planting projects and eventually establishing school tree nurseries

Himaya is also committed to assist the widows in various ways whereby empowering them to be able to establish some small businesses which could help them earn some income to support their children. We discuss with different groups and advise them on possible and appropriate projects that could suit their particular cases. Himaya makes project plan for those groups, initiates the implementation as well as coordination.

The organization is comprised of members that have got substantial experience on tree nursery management and local tree planting projects. Since Himaya team realized the effect of global climate changes and underlying consequences on our environment, we are committed to take action in order to preserve our environment and contribute to the effort towards green house gases reduction by planting as many trees as possible.

To have a better environment in the future, we need to prepare for it now. That is why Himaya think that education for young generation now is crucial than anything. Training our children about the nature and on professional education will result in a successful future for the next generation.

2. STATEMENT OF A PROBLEM .

Since trees have been traditionally cut without replenishment for years, a large area in this region as had been left open to erosion. Without immediate actions, this will lead to even serious environmental problems in a very near future.

The specific focus of Himaya in this aspect is all activities that are involved in promoting agro-forestry. We are encouraging and training local community to plant and protect native tree species which are becoming extinct. The reason behind this extinction is as a result of population growth which triggers high consumption of wood for construction, furniture and energy.

Environmental related problems among other things are the major causes of conflicts in Africa. Because this has been resulting in food scarcity and increase in unfertile soil forcing people to move. This has resulted in community shifting from one place to another in search for a better and fertile land including other resources such as water and grazing area for livestock. These movements become threat to other groups of people and causes threats to that specific group. As a result, confrontation begins. A better balance should be implemented in order to avoid future conflicts escalations when people are forces to move in search for the above mentioned.

Added to the above, are harshly dry climates that causing the level of rainfall to decrease and affect the crops and livestock. Natural sources of water are running dry and crops production capacity is diminishing every year as the farmers depend on rain to grow their crops. This triggers a crucial need to preserve and maintain water sources. Himaya is considering water source improvement to be an essential part of community development. Water borne diseases are common in these areas and are causing a lot of economic disadvantages. When population will be able to have access to clean water, the health will be improved which means increased work force hence increase in productivity.

However, recent research made by three top engineering firms from UK shows that in order to produce one cup of coffee, 150 liters of water is being used1. This is calculated from period of planting and growing coffee through to harvesting and production process until the coffee reach the consumer. Most of coffee plantations are in least developed countries where farmers are benefiting little from coffee prices while lots of resources are invested in the crop.

Widows are living in real hardship in the society since the whole burden of raising extended families lies on their shoulders. As a result they are not able to cater for basic needs. Let alone paying for clothes and school fees for their children, they are simply not able to provide them with a balanced diet. Himaya has come with simple solutions which may mean a lot to these families. A couple of projects have been initiated and the only problem is an external intervention on resources that are not readily available in surroundings. This includes funds and expertise in order to support widow so that they can have a starting point to help themselves.

The current projects started in in Rwambaizi village situated in Karagwe district taking place in Kagera Region, on Latitude 1.4 and on Longitude 31.133. It is on a high range almost 1800mabove the sea level. There is substantial wind blow and 12 hours of sun shines daily which gives the area an advantage on potential of sustainable renewable energy harnessing if facilities are available and installed.

With Secondary schools and hospital in the area without electric power, Himaya is highly looking for support for solar power installations as well as wind power harnessing capability in order to assist students to be able to study on reliable source of light and stop the currently use oil lamps. Smoke from those oil lamps affects lungs and eyes resulting in unhealthy young population who are unable to contribute positively to economic development of the society. Power supply could also help a lot on the hospital where there is an operation room without power.

3. PROJECT GROUP ORGANISATION.

HIMAYA is non Governmental organization (NGO) thus not engaged with any political activities. The membership does not require any body to posses certain religious belief or political orientation. We are focused on community development and agro forestry.

Since the establishment of the organization two years a go, HIMAYA now consist a total of 200 permanent members. In order to encourage commitment, the members have initiated to contribute 10, 000/= Shillings as a membership fee. This amount is equivalent to 6 €. The amount help to support administration costs of the association. The association is open to anybody who is willing to join the effort to support the community in tree planting and crops production regardless his/her religion, and ethnicity.

HIMAYA board consists of 12 members who were elected democratically. Their responsibility is to govern, plan and coordinate all activities of HIMAYA. The organization also has two committees one being project committee, and executive committee.

4. PROJECT DESCRIPTION.

4.1.Goals and Objectives.

4.1.1. Major goals.

a) To promote tree planting and green revolution this includes forest protection against bush burning practices and camping on stopping illegal logging.

b) To help community in fighting against poverty especially starting with disadvantaged groups such as widows.

c) To provide environmental education and agro-forestry to young generation and.d) Introduce improved cooking stove to reduce wood usage.e) Utilization of green energy.f) The introduction of efficient cooking stoves to reduce wood usage.

4.1.2. Major objectives.

4.1.2.1. Agro forestry activities. a) To promote agro forestry and educate the community on the benefit of planting trees and to protect and rehabilitate our environment. Without a sustainable approach to environmental conservation the wellbeing of our future generation is being punt in irreversible hardship. Himaya aims at benefiting the members and society in general. This will be realized in short and long terms. In a short term, community will benefit from tree products and gardens such as oil pressing, fruits and nuts productions. While in a long run benefit will be realized when they are able to harvest wood from the forests being maintained now.

Our specific focus in this aspect is all activities that are involved in promoting agro-forestry whereby encouraging and training local community to plant and protect native tree species which are becoming extinct as a result of population growth which trigger high consumption of wood for construction, furniture and energy. b) To protect existing trees from fire and illegal logging.Training the local farmers on the dangers of bush burning by giving them alternatives on how to solving their problems. A lot of trees and animals plus insects are dying because of bush burning. In most cases this happens because the person concerned with bush burning normally

has little environmental education. Himaya has already established and introduced campaign in the community on stopping bush fires.

c) To establish central tree nursery and pilot nurseries to different parts e.g. in different villages and schools. In order to ensure that there is a coordinated effort, Himaya have decided to establish a central tree nursery at Kamugaga area in Rwambaizi. The area is ideal for tree nursery due to its location. It is on a natural source of water (ground water) which is supplying the village with all need of water. Since tree nursery requires substantial amount of water, this location will reduce costs of having to collect water from several kilometers in order to get water for the seedlings if the nursery was to be located somewhere else.

However, this source of water it is entirely natural whereby the water is flowing from the ground and ends up in a shallow mud well and settles for the people to collect it. It is not hygiene because it is on same level as ground level which means animals are also accessing same source and when it rains, dirty water runoffs are ending in the well which results in a lots of stomach complication and diseases in the population. In order to use the source of water for tree planting and also continue to supply water for the local community with harmony, improvement on this area is very vital for the development of this project. Himaya saw the importance of improving this source of water in terms of water quantity and quality.

Not until with support from stichting WakK, Himaya got some funds to run this project. This means a small collection tank is being built (see drawing below in figure 1) which will collect the water until when it is full, the water will continue to flow to the next village where they also depend on thus source. But this tank will ensure that the water which has been collected at night and during the time no one is using the well will be used without distracting the flow of water. The water will stay clean in the concrete tank and the quantity will remain on same level as you can see on the diagram below. The tank has a capacity of 2500 liters of streaming water.

This water tank will boost to win local population minds and inspire them to support tree planting program since it is in one way or another the project is supporting in community development.

d) To protect natural water source by planting water friendly spp like mitoma, miziru, milinzi and other types. These types of tree have traditionally been known for their very low consumption of water and also protecting water from extreme evaporation.

4.1.3. Bread Bakery .

To provide service to the displaced people by establishing small projects this may help them to generate income. With a great number of widows and widower in our society, there is a crucial need to enable these people to be able to generate some income for their daily expenditure. Himaya is committed to encourage entrepreneurship with thin this group whereby the widows will be helped to start a bread bakery and gradually be come less dependent.

This project needs a start up capital totaling 10million Tanzanian shillings equivalent to 5,000€. This amount involves building a commercial oven, bakery equipment, storage facility, piece of land and eventually building a shop where the bread will be sold.

However, Himaya has secured 4000€ from donor in fund raising organized by Stichting WakK in Friesland in the Netherlands. This amount will help to buy a plot and building materials to construct an oven and a storage facility including Shop. The project however still lack another 1000€ in order to be able to start in full swing. The lacking amount will held in purchasing raw materials and baking equipment. After all this are done, the business will take effect and the project is predicted to be able to break even in a short period of time.

The profit will be used to expand the project by increasing capacity to plant trees and establishing new projects. It is however considered that same premised may be used in future by widows to develop some new projects such as handcrafts products which may find market in the area and even abroad. There is potentially also a possibility to train the women in tailoring where by clothing could be designed by shops and let the widows saw those garments and have some employment to local widows and other local people by completing those orders. So there are many possibilities to reduce poverty but the only problem is access to capital in terms of money and facilities to establish sustainable projects.

The focus of Himaya as shifted from the traditional way of community fully dependence from donor whereby people were used to ask for everything from the donors and not doing much to multiply the resources for own benefit. The motto of is “Support us so that we can help ourselves” People have to work for the support they get from the donor. After having said this, the widows will pay back the money the receive from the donor by being responsible to plant as much as possible trees and also being responsible by making sure that the project is sustainable and growing successfully

4.1.4. Cash Crops.

To introduce other crops which will assist the community to get income since coffee as cash crop has dropped its price in the area due to the failure by government to help the farmer secure the markets. Crops to be introduced are such as Jatropha, Carcas, Moringa, Orinfera as well as wood trees and natural nuts product trees.

However, we also want to introduce Baobab tree in the areas as a pilot project. The tree has a lot of benefit to the community if it is properly cultivated. The plan is to plant few seedlings for

the sake of experiment and if seem to cope with the climate here, we will promote full scale production of Baobab trees. In appendix please see the extract with information about Baobab and benefits

Generally in agro-forestry the benefits are realized in the long run when the trees are grown up to be able to produce crops or timber. So before that period, the farmers need to have something which may provide them with income. Some of the trees such as Jatropha and Mronge are producing the benefit in the short period after planting the trees. Though are many international criticism about bio-fuel, we want to study more about the aspect and underlying effect on food security.

4.1.5. Improved cooking stoves.

Improves cooking stoves, 100% of energy in cooking and heating is provided by wood in the rural areas. Research shows that improved cooking stove may reduce the amount of wood used in cooking to around 60% less than what is being used at the moment. This will be a big contribution to lowering Co2 emissions and play a role in greenhouse gasses reduction.

Currently the local population is using traditional three stones where a pot rests and fuel wood is inserted in three open spaces. (See diagrams in section 4.1.4). The traditional system consumes a lot of wood and also a lot of heat is being lost ineffectively.

The improved cooking stoves are made of burnt clay and in combination with steel reinforcement. The stove can be made to last long through mixture of clay soil and sand. See diagram below in figure 2.

This project if implemented will help tremendously to reduce the wood consumption which has a direct impact on amount of trees to be cut down for cooking or charcoal making. It is the most sustainable way of cooking and heating the house especially in rural community. The same stoves have designed for the Burundian refugees in Lukole camps in Ngara. They proved to be sustainable and cost effective.

Himaya is looking for support in order to start this project of sustainable stove nick named Mkombozi (In native Swahili the word means the Savior). In order to construct one stove, the raw materials cost 35,000 shillings equals to 20 Euros. This amount is a lot for most of local community members, they will rather continue cutting trees that paying 20 Euros for the stove. In this case, a special program has to be initiated were the community members can be able to secure loan to buy this stove from Himaya and in turn they pay back by planting trees.

The plan is that, Himaya construct these stoves, and distribute them to the farmers as loan. The aim is to target 500 families in the village in the first phase in a period of one year. After that the second phase will follow while the rest of the community receives training and workshop on how to construct the stoves for them selves. This applies to families with capacity to afford the 20Euros for materials.

This project will directly deliver positive results to carbon reduction since many trees will be protected from cutting. Therefore, Himaya will require 10,000 Euros in order to initiate the first phase of 500 houses who will take part in this transformation project into sustainable wood usage. We strongly believe if implemented, this method will save a lot of trees from being cut for firewood and contribute enormously in our global green revolution.

However this practice involves some time in training and giving consultancy to convince community members to shift from traditional method to sustainable way of cooking.

5. PROJECT IMPLE MENTATION

HIMAYA is determined to implement this project by planting different variety of trees mainly with a large number indigenous trees which are in a danger of extinction. These trees have been continuously cut down without replacement. Due to population growth in Karagwe district there have been a continuously a high demand for those indigenous trees for palling as well as source of energy. At the same time, there have been no any trees grown and there have no any determined program to replace what have been cut. There are hectors and hectors of bare land in Rwambaizi village and Karagwe District at large. In those areas the soil is not good for other normal crops for food production. Below are the core activities being carried out by Himaya currently and at least in the course of near future.

5.1.Establishment of central tree nursery . a) HIMAYA has established a central nursery at Kamuganga where by 34,848 seedlings have been raised this rainy season. There are different spp mainly for timber, wood for energy, fuel oil pressing and others for medicine. This current rainy season, HIMAYA has distributed seedlings to the members, schools and other institution in Rwambaizi including other nearby villagers.

b) In order for the nursery to be able to operate on its full capacity as a central nursery, the site needs to be improved to allow efficient good coordination of activities. This will include purchase of nursery equipment as well as nursery implements. Himaya has already set a target of planting 100,000 (one hundred thousand trees) every year for a period of 5 years. In order to implement this, Himaya requires financial and facilities to accomplish their objectives. In appendix 1 of this document, you will kindly find an overview of expenditure for the whole year in planting 100,000 trees. The total amount to €10,000 (ten thousand Euros) meaning that it will cost less than € 0, 11 to plant 1 tree. It will also create employment to some local people working on the nursery.The second year will be even cheaper because this amount includes also equipment which by assumption will be still in good condition the second year of the project.

c) Construction of a storage facility for the tools as well as acting as shelter for workers during break and bad weather. Since this project is planned to be a strategic nursery, meaning it is a long term project a permanent shelter is required. The shelter will cost an estimated amount of 5,000 Euros being building materials costs and technical costs.In appendix 2 you will kindly find a break down of the costs for building a shelter/storage facility.

5.2.Environmental Education . HIMAYA through village authorities and eventually District Forestry and Education authorities has already introduced practical lessons. School children from villages nearby the project are encourage and involved in tree planting programs so that they can grow up with affinity to care for the environment. The program worked well with Rwambaizi school and Kibona primary school.

A total of four schools comprising of three primary schools and one secondary school have been involved in this program until now, school being Kibona primary school, Omurwere primary school, Bwera primary school and Rwambaizi secondary school. We intend to assist them in technical knowhow so that this coming season they can raise 5000 seedlings each school by providing them with, seeds and polystyrene bags as well as other inputs and consultancy

5.3.Food For Work Programe

HIMAYA has introduces a system where by widows who does not own land are assisted by approaching landlords who are willing to let their land to be used freely by widows for planting seasonal crops. HIMAYA is providing seeds to the widows for the promise of returning the same amount given to them after harvesting. At same time the plots are planted with trees as part of mixed cropping.

In order to help the widows at least in the short term, Himaya has established a vegetable nursery for the widows in the same area where the trees seedlings are grown. The widows are now able to sell some fresh vegetable in the village and earn some money for buying text books for their children.


Furthermore the role of HIMAYA is to make sure that the combination of the crops is based on planting friendly spp’s to those plots. After 5 years the tree plantation will be returned back to the landlord. This way we help the widow and help the land owner to get tees in the long run while we are preserving the environment by reducing carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere.We have established groups of 5 to 7 widows who works together during the process of planting and maintaining the plots such as by weeding while at same time they assist to take care of tree seedlings planted. Every season they are able to harvest their seasonal crops and by doing so they have assurance of food and they can sell the surplus in order to get some income to help their children.

6. AVAILABLE RESOURCES.

Himaya recognizes the wealthy of the country in natural resources (environment) that is why the initiatives to preserve these natural resources are given a high priority.

In whatever project being undertaken in this world, there will be little achievement if there will be no human resources involved. Himaya in itself is a group of organized and committed manpower. We regard the use and involvement of community members in solving their problems as a valuable ingredient for achieving the objectives. In this case, we as a group, we are an important resource for success of this project.

KADAFA is providing all the organic manure for both tree planting and vegetable gardens for free. Organic manure is one of expensive in puts because there are not many livestock and demand is high in the area.

Expertise being among the available recourses, Himaya takes advantage of using experiences and skilled people in the society in order to voluntarily contribute to the development by training the rest of the members and helping them forward.

7. LONG TERM PLANNING.

To plant a total of 500,000 seedlings of different variety of trees. These trees will be planted in phases of 100,000 trees per year with effective from 2010 onwards.

To establish stable income generation projects for poor and vulnerable such as widows and the like. This include establishing bread bakery, encouraging women and men to use available natural resources to make handcrafts and art works that could potentially create income for them as well as creativity and culture. Training will be given in these areas.

To develop Kamuganga nursery to a central tree and vegetable nursery. At the site a permanent structure will have to be constructed using local available building materials. At this location, Himaya will be conducting tree planting training on site to other community members who are joining the effort to spread the campaign of green revolution. These are schools and different community groups. The construction will cost 3.500 Euros.

Himaya is planning to establish a technical training college for young girls and boys who

finish primary school and can not be able to proceed with high education. Every year 500 children complete their primary education but less that 50% are able to continue to


secondary school and the rest remain roaming in streets. These young people could be very useful if they can learn different skills which will help to create employment for them in the future. The planned training institute will help them to learn woodwork, Masonry, Carpentry, Painting and metal works. This will help them to be independent and eventually to be able make use of self employment.

However, in order to start this project there is a lot of arrangements required which involve a lot of aspects including finances, permits and infrastructure. Himaya will continue to make more research on this aspect for coming future in order to learn more the best way we can establish this training center.

We will develop strong partnership with other stakeholder in the exercise of tree planting, community development activities and green revolution such as Fadeco, Gepat, Kadafa and Huderes all these operating in Karagwe area.

To establish pilot nurseries to 5 different primary schools. Himaya will help to train students and pupils to establish and take care of tree nurseries at their schools. Already a total of five primary schools have joined the effort in order to take part in tree planting project.

We are establishing tree nurseries in different villages where Himaya has established branches such as Mutagata (Rwbigaga village) Muhulile (Nkwenda) Mabira, Kyaju and Katwe. We aim to assist by giving them seeds, polystyrene bags watering jerry cans and expect them to raise 20,000 seedlings each.

To reach out for the widows who still haven’t been able to join Himaya because of distance problems. We predict that a number of widows’ member will multiply because there are more who have not been able to join Himaya from villages far away from Rwambaizi.

8. ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONSTRAINTS.

8.1.Achievement. Establishment of a central nursery with a total of 40,000 seedlings of different spp have

been raised, distributed and planted by 25 stakeholders. The nursery has a potential of raising 100,000 pieces of trees per year.

We managed to start widow group of 17 women and assist them to establish a vegetable garden to reduce poverty. The first step have been achieved, the garden is now running well. The next is to establish bread bakery for them to earn some income this project is still in initial stages. The group is enlarging and becoming even stable in terms of cooperation.

Distributed free 1000 seedlings to schools institutions and HIMAYA members this season only. All this is done to sensitize community in a whole campaign of tree planting.

Rehabilitate by constructing water reservoir at Kamuganga local water source where by the community is benefiting from that tank by getting cleaner and enough water. This project is going on. There a total of 3 water sources for the entire village, we plan to use them in future also for creating sub nurseries and improve those water sources.


Himaya managed to supervise the installation of a wind turbine and solar energy installation at Rwambaizi secondary school to provide light for students during evening studies. The equipment, transport and installation costs where donated by Sctichting VitaActiva from the Netherlands. The responsibility for maintenance as necessary service is of the installation is being looked after by Himaya and the agreement is that the school will pay back by planting as many trees as possible. However the installation covers only part of the study classes.

8.2.Constraints.

Among the constraints in this projects are as stipulated hereunder. The association is working hard to realize its objectives but it is constantly facing problems which are beyond locally available means of solving the problems.

Poor environmental education in the community concerned. More investment in environment and tree planting training to the local is highly required.

Financial constraints, to run the project smoothly and meet the required inputs at a right time in a required state. Furthermore the association has no stable source of funding the activities being run to achieve the planned objectives.

Lack of transportation facilities for haulage of nursery ingredients such as manure from cattle farms and fine sand from sand extraction sites. Manual means of transporting these or hire of commercial vehicle if available is very expensive. Himaya is looking for means to secure a project pick-up vehicle that could be saving in this case. The cost of the vehicle could be given as a micro financing scheme whereby the money will be paid back in terms of planting trees equivalent to a certain amount agreed in terms of carbon credits.

In order to be able to share information easily and communicate our activities effectively, Himaya need assistance in website creating. If we have our own website it will make it easy for us to pass our campaign easily to the community and our supporters. We will also be able to exchange our experiences with other organizations worldwide.


9. CONCLUSION. HIMAYA believes that our collective effort if directed to a common goal will for sure result in a substantial achievement. We understand that the work we do is for the benefit of our future generation in global terms. This will not only benefit our village but also the whole world.

In order to be able to implement all the plans for a period of one year, Himaya will require a grand total of € 26.000,00. After having said this, we very much count on your support in order to sustain what we have done and keep on our effort. That is not going to end up here, but will be for us a momentum to realize our objectives. Our motto is “Support us so that we can help ourselves”. The association has currently no any financial resources from either the government or other external sources. At the moment depend on membership contribution which is very meager. We hope and believe that your support, be it technical, financial or consultancy will be highly appreciated and will make a fruitful result.
