H I L T O N H E A D■ WELCOME

Welcome to the Lowcountry

Hilton Head, Bluffton and the surrounding Lowcountry have a calming effect.

The connected communities sooth your spirit and calm your mind. The environment here moves a little bit slower, and makes things a little less stressful. Worries are washed away with salt

water and sand. Here life truly imitates art. Spanish moss draped across

live oaks, sunsets against salt marshes and canopies of trees brimming with wildlife; it’s a little more lyrical and a little less corporate.

Many are attracted to the Lowcountry for its natu-ral beauty and lack of commercialism. That’s the way the town of Hilton Head wants it to feel. While Mother Nature created it so beautifully, the town has made sig-nificant efforts to keep it beautiful.

The town’s Land Management Ordinance provides many of the regulations that help to maintain Hilton Head Island’s reputation as preserving the natural envi-ronment. Ordinances regarding natural resources, the establishment of buffers along the roads, signs and the review of all development along major corridors all lend themselves to this reputation.

The town’s Design Review Board ensures proposed buildings and site improvements are contiguous with the design guide for the island. The design guide directs the board and developers what natural materials to use in development, what native plants should be used for green space and other design elements.

The end result is a community living in harmony with nature. Welcome to our Lowcountry paradise.

HILTON HEAD ISLANDTHE ULTIMATE SUMMER ESCAPEBY LEACY KELLEY | PHOTOS BY ARNO DIMMLING

Developed in 1956 by Charles Fraser, Hilton Head has come a long way from its mere 300-per-son population in the early

1950s. Today, the island’s year round pop-ulation is about 39,000. At only 12 miles long and 4 miles wide, this tiny island has much to offer for vacationers.

Here on Hilton Head, we may move slower, but that’s just island time. Friendly locals and beautiful scenery make for the perfect seaside getaway with countless activities. With many beaches, world-class golf courses and tennis courts, endless res-taurants, shopping and so much more, we can guarantee you’ll never be bored.

Here you can choose from a lazy day spent on the beach or an adventurous day out on the water doing water sports. As for the beaches, they’re all public and equally stunning. Each one of the beaches offers a different feel. For example, Coligny Beach

offers food and shopping in a fun, beachy environment while Burkes Beach is great for surfing in a more low key environment.

But, if you are looking for something in between there’s still a beach for you. If you still want to enjoy the salty ocean water, but looking for a more active day, there’s countless water sports to partake in. Jet skiing, paddle boarding and parasailing are among the most popular. Even off the water, we have enough things to do to keep anyone busy.

Hilton Head Island has over 20 spec-tacular golf courses to offer. The most popular and notable is the Harbour Town Golf Links, home of the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage tournament, located in Sea Pines. But, with over 20 golf courses, there is a course for everyone.

Even if your golf game isn’t up to par, there’s always a tennis court ready to play on. Hilton Head and tennis is a match

made in heaven. We host eight of the world’s top 100 tennis resorts and camps and have courts in all three Grand Slam surfaces.

Improve your game at a tennis academy or play a leisurely game with friends at one of our tennis clubs. We are a spectacular biking destination, with over 60 miles of bike paths and 100 miles of protected public pathways. Rent bikes or bring your own to enjoy the island on bike.

Don’t forget about the arts. We boast the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina for both performing and visual arts. Stop by and see what drama, comedy or musical is playing during your stay. Our award-winning island has changed much since it’s start in the 50s but we preserve our small island’s rich history while staying fresh with new activities, resorts and restaurants every year. Hilton Head Island is sure to impress vacationers from near and far.

BLUFFTONHEART OF THE LOWCOUNTRY

Only a few miles from Hilton Head Island, Bluffton holds it’s own with Southern charm and picturesque views right on the banks of the May River. The Huffingto Post named Bluffton the “No. 1 Top Amazing Non-Beach Getaway” and the Wall Street Journal featured Bluffton as a “must stop” and had a three page feature on

restaurants in the Bluffton-Hilton Head area. The town of Bluffton has developed immensely and become a must-see destination in the

South. Bluffton is an eccentric town and is filled with history, scenic views and great dining and shopping sure to have something for everyone.

One of the highlights of this historic town is the Farmer’s Market of Bluffton. Every Thursday, the town comes together with local produce, seafood, meats and more on Calhoun Street.

The market was even was named “Best Farmers Market in South Carolina” in 2013 and finished 11th nationwide. Bluffton, a town rich in history, has many historical sites that cannot be missed.

The Church of the Cross dates back to the 1700s and its unique gothic architecture on the May River is a must-see. There are countless historic homes including the Heyward House and the Carson Cottage that should also make your list.

In addition to rich history, Buffton offers a wide array of restaurants that are all equally deli-cious. Among the most notable are The Cottage (great for tea and brunch), Cahill’s Market & Chicken Kitchen and the Bluffton Oyster Co. All three are located in Old Town Bluffton.

Bluffton is also home to quaint boutiques and galleries unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Both local and national art is for sale and on display at many of the Bluffton galleries.

Boutiques like Gigi’s and Eggs ‘n’ Tricities offer a wide selection of clothing, jewelry and more. Along with plenty of one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques, Bluffton is home to many nationally recognized stores and shops.

The Tanger Outlets are perfect for shoppers who want a good deal. Tanger offers luxury brands like Kate Spade, BCBG, Micheal Kors and more with a winning price tag.

In contrast to the luxury stores, there are also many large chain stores like Target, Lowes and Home Depot for everyday needs. Bluffton is a diverse, award-winning small with abun-dant history, unique shopping and dining that also caters to our more common needs.

With its charm, history and beauty Bluffton is no longer just a town to pass through on the way to Hilton Head…it is a destination.

■ BEACHES

SANDS. SURFING. SWIMMING. SUNNING. SHORES. SAILING.

SANCTUARY.hatever your vision of the “beach life” may entail, the sun-splashed beaches of

Hilton Head Island offer as many experi-ences as there are shells on their sandy shores. From its heel to its toe, here’s an overview of some of the island’s popular beaches and hidden gems.

DOLPHIN HEAD (1)Located on the northern tip of Hilton Head in Hilton Head Plantation, Dolphin Head beach overlooks Port Royal Sound and includes a mile-long walking path and a quiet two-mile swath of beach only open to HHP residents dotted with vestigial live oaks and pines. Hilton Head Plantation is one of the island’s largest year-round resi-dential communities, and Dolphin Head is more private than some of the island’s other beaches. BEST FOR: Walking (at low tide), surf fi shing and col-lecting shells ACCESS: Dolphin Head Lane, inside Hilton Head Plantation

MITCHELVILLE BEACH (3)Many locals consider this beach Hilton Head’s best-kept secret. If you’re looking to build sandcastles on a pristine beach, pick another spot. If you’re looking for privacy and beauty in a rich historical setting, this beach is for you. Be sure to check out the incredible story of Mitchelville in the nearby park. BEST FOR: Privacy, fi shing, walking ACCESS: Near the end of Beach City Road at Mitchelville Beach Park

FOLLY FIELD BEACH (5)A bit off the beaten path from the plantations and resorts, Folly Field has more of a locals’ beach feel. With a shorter walk to the beach than nearby Driessen Beach, it is both convenient and quiet. Take a long walk and grab a pit stop and a drink at the outdoor bar at the nearby The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa, or spread out your towel and spend the day at one of the island’s wider and unclut-tered beaches. Loved by surfers and body boarders, it still can occasionally be treacherous with its riptides and undertows.BEST FOR: Surfers, walking and biking ACCESS: Located on Starfi sh Road, a right turn off Folly Field Road

ISLANDER'S BEACH (4)A favorite of locals, Islander’s Beach recently earned a high ranking in Coastal Living magazine’s Top 21 Beaches on the East Coast. It’s less crowded than most Hilton Head spots and swimmer-friendly, thanks to its gentle underwa-ter slope. Parking is at a premium and is mostly reserved for residents and year-round pass holders, with metered spots available for guests. For nearby mid-island visitors, a bike ride or a friendly beachfront drop-off might be the best bet for easy access.BEST FOR: Locals and swimming ACCESS: Located at 94 Folly Field Road, at Sparkleberry Lane

FISH HAUL CREEK BEACH (2)The area is known for its diverse ecology, maritime forest, salt marsh and creeks, beach dunes and scrub, and the Port Royal tidal fl ats. The beach itself is a generous walk from the park, but ambles through a wonderful nature path, and is lightly used for swimming. The beach park, located on the “heel” of the island, is 31 acres of mostly untouched nature, feels like your own private beach and is arguably the scene for the best bird watching in all of Hilton Head.BEST FOR: Walking, birdwatching, clamming and fi shing ACCESS: Located near the end of Beach City Road, accessible from Fish Haul Creek Park

SUMMER 2015 17

BEACHES ■DRIESSEN BEACH (6)A long boardwalk connects the maritime forest to the white-sand beach. A long, wide shoreline leaves ample room to spread out, and the flat ocean floor and small waves make it kid-friendly and great for body boarding or just wading. Tucked in a heavily shaded and wooded area, it’s a bit hard to find but with tons of amenities like parking and restrooms, it’s popular with both locals and discerning visitors alike.BEST FOR: Day trips, swimming, sunning, locals and in-the-know visitors ACCESS: Off William Hilton Parkway, at the end of Bradley Beach Road

BURKES BEACH (7)Located to the northern side of Chaplin Community Park, Burke’s Beach is adja-cent to Singleton Beach, divided by the natural folly field The beach offers sea-sonal lifeguards and limited parking, but boasts some of the best waves for surfing and boarding. The dog park at Chaplin Park is a nice touch and makes it a great destination for a bark-and-beach day with man’s best friend. BEST FOR: Surfing boarding, walk-ing and pets ACCESS: Just south of Palmetto Dunes at the end of Burkes Beach Road

NORTH FOREST BEACH (8)Located near over 100 dining and shopping options in one of the island’s oldest neighbor-hoods, it is one of the places to be on Hilton Head. For surfers, the beach area at Jacana Street is known to offer some of the best waves at high tide on the island. Locals swear by the shoreline as the best on Hilton Head, and the quaint mix of older beach cottages with modern ocean compounds makes for a compelling community feel.BEST FOR: Swimming, walking and surf-ing ACCESS: The one-mile stretch of beach starts at Coligny Circle and runs north to the Sonesta Resort located in Shipyard Plantation

COLIGNY BEACH (9)At Hilton Head’s busiest beach you’ll findsoft sand and wonderful clean water. Even better, it’s close to the island’s unofficial downtown area. The beach is protected by security cameras and visitors can enjoy free Wi-Fi, volleyball nets and scores of beach rentals and free parking — just not at the popular Coligny Plaza. The beach and the shopping plaza do get a little crowded, but if you like an active and lively beach experience, this is your spot.BEST FOR: If the crowds are any indica-tion, everybody. Perfect for sunbathing, swimming, biking, an early-morning jog or a romantic date night. ACCESS: At Coligny Circle, at the intersection of Pope Avenue and South Forest Beach Drive

SOUTH FOREST BEACH (10)Part of Hilton Head’s “Ocean Community,” South Forest Beach is on a one-mile stretch of beachfront between the Coligny Circle and Sea Pines Plantation gate. It is the larg-est of the island’s public beaches, and draws more crowds than North Forest Beach. Wide, comfortable and spacious, and buffered somewhat from nearby development, it’s a great all-purpose spot. Venture a little fur-ther path the public access point that divides the north and south beaches, and you’ll findeven more room to spread out.BEST FOR: Swimming, fishing biking and walking ACCESS: Public access on Alder Lane and Seaside Villas, off South Forest Beach Road

SOUTH BEACH (11)Located in Sea Pines at the “toe” of the island near the South Beach Marina. Though the marina area is one of the more popular island destinations for visitors, with its dining, shop-ping and inventive water sports experiences, the Calibogue Beach itself is relatively quiet, nearly secluded, and is great for just watching the dolphins or a relaxing walk. Don’t go out at high tide, though, as there is little to no beach at that time. If you are not a Sea Pines resident or registered guest, you must pay $6 per vehicle to enter the resort. BEST FOR: Unique water sports opportunities (kayaking, sport fishing parasailing, etc.), sight-seeing and walking ACCESS: Near Sea Pines South Beach Marina, best accessed by bike or foot

hat's that? It's a question visiting mothers and fathers are asked constantly by inquisi-tive children during family beach days. Don't lose cool points by answering, "that's a bird,

son." Impress your little one with a name and a quick fact about the critter in question. Here is a look at the 10 most common animals you will see at the beach.

BLUE CRABGreatly cherished by local seafood chefs. Females have broad abdomens, like the dome of the Capitol. Males have narrow abdomens, like the Washington Monument.

BROWN PELICANThese birds glide gracefully over the water until they spot a fish then they fold their wings and clumsily smash into the water to grab their prey.

CANNONBALL JELLYFISHAlso known as the cabbage head, this is the most common jellyfish encountered in our waters. It is the least venomous native jelly and stings are very mild. You will often see it washed up on the beach.

LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLEYou’ll find their nests on Hilton Head Island beaches between May and August, when they come ashore at night to lay their eggs. The eggs hatch in about 60 days and the small turtles make their way to the ocean using the moon as their beacon.

GHOST CRABThey live in holes in the sand above the high tide line and stay inside during the hottest part of the day. They emerge mostly at night to feed on clams.

GULLThese scavengers are the most common bird on the beach. They usually eat dead things that wash up on shore, steal other birds’ meals, beg tourists for food or hover around shrimp boats.

HORSESHOE CRABThey resemble crustaceans but are actu-ally closely related to spiders and scor-pions. They are considered living fossils, originating 450 million years ago.

BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN More than 200 live here year-round, and many more are migratory. Local captains have given several of them names based on their personalities, such as Chopper and Nic.

SAND DOLLARFlat sea urchin with velvet-textured spines covered with very small hairs. Coordinated movements of the spines enable sand dollars to move across the seabed. It’s illegal to remove living sand dollars from the beach.

SEA STARThey’re often called starfish but they're not actually fish They don’t have gills, scales or fins and move using hundreds of tube feet, which are located on their underside.

■ BEACHES

BEAR PONGA version of beer pong without the table, using oversized cups and a ball. A set of 12 buckets and two balls costs around $70. Each team sets up a triangle of six buckets opposite of one another. The object is to eliminate the other team’s buckets buy throwing or bouncing the ball into them. Filling the buckets with alcohol is not advised.

LADDER TOSSTwo balls connected to a string are called bolas. Each team has three sets of bolas. Each ladder has three rungs, each with a different point value, and players try to toss the bolas so they hang from a ladder rung. The top is worth 3, the middle is 2 and the bottom is 1. Points are tallied at the end of each round. Collect 21 points to win. Sets range from $32 to more than $150. Try not to hit other beachgoers with the bolas.

CORNHOLEA popular beach game known by many names, including tailgate, bean bag toss, doghouse or simply bags. Sets range from $30 to more than $200. Players take turns throwing bags of corn or beans at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. A bag in the hole scores 3 points while landing on the platform scores 1 point. Play continues until a team reaches 21. Never play for money with an Ohioan.

FRESCOBOLA paddleball beach sport that looks a bit like pingpong without the table. The paddles are smaller and the ball is larger. Sets range from $30 to more than $300. Two players face one another with the objective of hitting the ball back and forth without the ball hitting the ground. Hilton Head’s longstanding frescobol record is five hits.

FRISBEERThis combines the fun of washers with the precision of playing Frisbee. You need two empty cans, two PVC pipes about four feet tall and one Frisbee. Post the PVC pipes in the sand about eight feet apart. Place an empty aluminum can on top of each pipe. The goal is to knock the can off the pole. You get 2 points for hitting the pole and knocking the can to the ground and 3 points for hitting the can and knocking it to the ground. The other team gets points if they catch the can before it hits the ground. This game is best played with the Frisbee one hand and a beverage in the other.

SPIKEBALLA volleyball-like team sport played by two teams of two players. Opposing teams line up across from each other with the Spikeball net in the center. The ball is put in play with a service — a hit by the server from behind the service bound-ary into the net to an opposing player. Once the

ball is served players can move anywhere they want. The object of the game is to hit the ball into the net so that the opposing team cannot return it. Sets cost around $50.

TIDALBALLA blend between cornhole, bocce ball and horseshoes. A set costs around $20 and comes with four small balls and a shovel used to dig two holes and trenches behind each hole. Get the ball in the hole for 3 points or the trench for 1 point. Teammates on opposing sides alternate tosses. Invented here in the Palmetto State, TidalBall is quickly gaining popularity on beaches all over the East Coast.

ANIMAL RULES ON THE BEACH Must remove and dispose of animal excrement Must be on a leash or under positive voice control at all times

BEACH SAFETY Protect your skin with sunscreen and reapply at least every two hours, but if you are more prone to burning or in the water a lot, reapply more often. Drink lots of water as your body needs to stay cool in the hot sun and drink water even if you are not thirsty. Thirst is the firstsign of dehydration and being in the sun especially during the hottest part of the day can cause dehydration faster. Watch for signs of heat stroke that often comes when one is dehydrated and in the sun for extended periods of time. When sweating does not help cool the body anymore the body’s temperature rises and one may feel faint, have a rapid pulse, feel hot, skin flushed red, and more. Should this arise call 911 and move the person to a cool place, wrap them in wet sheets, towels, or place ice packs on their wrists, ankles, armpits, and neck to cool them down. Keep watch on their breathing and

do not let anything block the airway, keep them lying down out of the sun. Just as you put sunscreen on your skin putting sunglasses on is protecting your eyes from the sun’s harsh UV rays. Make sure to wear appropriate foot protection as many times the sand can be extremely hot and can burn your feet. Beyond just the hot sand there is glass, shells, or sticks that can cut you as well as the occasional crab.

OCEAN SAFETY TIPS Never swim alone. Learn to swim no matter how old you are as it could save your life or someone else’s. Make sure you can always see the lifeguard and stay in designated swim-ming areas. Always check the water conditions at the lifeguard post incase rip tides are high or stingrays or jellyfish are in the area. It is better to be prepared than find out the hard way. Don’t swim against a current but swim across it. Make sure to always have enough energy to make it back to land in any case.

FIRST AID TIPS FOR THE BEACH Sunburn: Soak under cool water most likely in a shower or tub. Aloe can often help heal and provide anti-inflammatory taking Ibuprofen can help too. Bee Sting: First and formost if allergic seek medical help immediately, if not apply baking soda paste and ice. Jellyfish Sting: Try to remove any remaining barbs then rise with vinegar, apply dry sand, or put under hot water. Snake bites: Use a compression dress-ing just above site. Seek medical help immediately and if you can remember the type of snake or at least the markings will help with treatment. Alligators: Stay away from them as they can both run and swim very fast but if you do get bitten call 911. Sting Ray: Rinse with water and apply heat to neutralize sting, in any case seek medical attention immediately. Crab bites: Rise out well, clean out wound, and apply an antibiotic ointment as you can get infections from them. Depending on severity may need stiches that would require seeking medical help.

FINAL TIP AS ALWAYS BE SMART AND CALL 911 IF NEW SYMPTOMS ARISE OR THE SITUATION WORSENS RAPIDLY.

All violations of beach regulations can result up to fines of $500 per each offense. Respect the beautiful wildlife, and leave only your footprints when you go.

A Destination for GolfSince 1969 when the PGA Tour first visited Hilton

Head Island, it has been hard to think of Hilton Head Island without thinking also of golf. The RBC Heritage has been a veritable who’s who of golf-

ing immortals. Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Greg Norman, Davis Love III and many other golf luminar-ies have had their names etched on the champion’s trophy and received the now famous plaid jacket associated with the victory. The now world renowned Harbour Town Golf Links is open to the public and with a little advance plan-ning you too can play the course your heroes play.

Not quite ready for the PGA Tour? That’s fine as well with over 20 public courses on Hilton

Head and immediately off Island in Bluffton, there’s a track that will fit you like a glove.

Forgot your clubs? All of the local courses offer great rental and demo programs. Don’t forget to ask for demo clubs sometimes they are the latest and greatest but beware you might shoot the round of your life and feel like taking them home with you. Winter, spring, summer or fall; Hilton Head Island golf is world class and you will have a great day on the links.

■ TENNIS

Tennis, like golf, is a year-round activity on Hilton Head Island and in Bluffton. One of the top 50 ten-nis destinations in the United States, the Lowcountry has the facilities and the competition to satisfy the

most discriminating player. The area’s 20-plus tennis clubs offer more than 300 courts. Clay, grass and a variety of hard surfaces are available. Some residential developments have their own courts, which may be used by guests staying in those developments. Players may access facilities on private plantations if they make arrangements to play. Ask for details when reserving your court time.

■ BIKING

Harbour Town

While the Island only measures about 12 miles long by 5 miles wide visitors can enjoy nearly 60 miles of public pathways

and nature trails accessible to all. In addi-tion, there are close to 50 miles of paths behind the gates of private communities like Shipyard, Sea Pines, and Palmetto Dunes.

The fl at terrain and the bike path system make it very easy to ride on the bike paths, however many visitors fi nd the best place to pedal is on the beach. Enjoy a bike ride on the hard packed sand near the water line at low tide. It is great fun and it offers a spectacular view. You might even see some dolphins! There are miles of beautiful bike paths open to all waiting for you to explore.

RULES OF THE ROADFirst and foremost, be a safe rider. Please

pay attention to traffi c lights, crosswalks, and stop signs. There are small stop signs posted for bicyclists safety on the pathways, and it is never safe to cross anywhere other than at a marked crosswalk.

Please lock your bike when not in use. As previously mentioned, bike rental compa-nies usually provide bike locks at no addi-tional cost.

Bike paths inside gated communities, or plantations, are restricted for use by resi-dents and guests of that community.

If you do decide to ride on the beach please do not ride in the water. The sea salt wreaks havoc on bikes and quickly dam-ages the paint and moving parts. Please use fresh water to rinse off bikes that might have salt water on them.

VACATION TO REMEMBERMany vacationers feel that biking on

Hilton Head is one of the factors that make our Island special. We hope that you will take advantage of our bike paths and bicycle vendors to make this vacation one to remember.

1. MOST SCENIC RIDEThe boardwalk at Barker Field overlooking the marsh is simply amazing. If you’re on the south end, visit the “toe” of the island on the beach looking at the entrance to South Beach Marina. You’ll see Harbour Town in the distance, Daufuskie Island dead ahead and the Atlantic to the left.

2. BEST BEACH TO CYCLEStart at Palmetto Dunes, hit the beach and travel south to the tip of the island at South Beach — preferably with the wind at your back. Assuming cooperation from the tides and tourists, this is as good as it gets.

3. BEST NATURE TRAILThe rice dike trail in Sea Pines to the horse stables and into the Sea Pines Forest Preserve is incredibly rich in natural beauty, and it’s often almost empty.

4. BEST FAMILY RIDEStart at Coligny Circle and take the pathway west along Pope Avenue to New Orleans Road. Then turn right along the path-way and follow Arrow Road across the William Hilton Parkway to the Palmetto Bay Marina and back; you’ll stay off the main drags and discover a lengthy hidden ribbon of trail behind the shops and restaurants. For an alternate route, turn onto the William Hilton Parkway from New Orleans Road, follow the pathways to the Shelter Cove Marina and back.

5. BEST EXERCISEThe Bike Doctor’s organized rides provide a great workout; rid-ers leave the shop on New Orleans Road at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

6. BEST PICNIC SPOTJarvis Park, Chaplin Park and Coligny are great spots to picnic — as is, you know, the beach.

7. MOST ROMANTICThe beach at sunset or sunrise˜is just right for those romantic moments.

Yes, “water, water every where…nor any drop to drink” as Coleridge wrote 215 years ago in the “Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” but we

don’t care about drinking water as long as we can always enjoy it by boating, sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking, charter boat-ing and everything else.

For locals and tourists alike, the creeks, rivers, sounds, ocean, lagoons, ponds, salt marshes, wetlands and maritime forests with their abundant wildlife provide a bounty of outdoor adventures for every-one of all ages.

Kayaking on calm water that surrounds Hilton Head Island is not only relaxing, it can be a great adventure, too. And the best part? Kayaking is a sport for every-one.

“Ability is not a concern,” said Mike Overton, president of Outside Hilton Head, which rents kayaks and other water sports equipment. “If you can walk around the block, you can kayak. This is taking a

nature walk through the marsh.”With the abundance of accessible inlets,

rivers and lagoons in the area, kayaking is an exotic yet practical exercise. But it remains unchartered territory for many locals and tourists. For those willing to try, here are some basic expectations and rec-ommendations.

Whether starting with a lesson or tour, or for those who prefer trying solo, the necessities are safety precautions, know-ing how to enter and exit the kayak and some paddling basics.

Important safety rules include wearing a personal flot tion device, keeping safe distances from larger water vessels such as boats, maintaining balance and simply staying in a comfort zone.

When entering and exiting a kayak, a safe and convenient location is a boat ramp. Place the kayak parallel to the edge of the ramp and step sideways in and out of the kayak.

Kayak paddles, unlike canoe prototypes,

have blades on both ends. Once in the water, grip the paddle with your arms slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Then alternate strokes from side to side, forming an imaginary figu e eight.

From there, one can kayak for leisure, or turn an afternoon into vigorous exercise. It’s much like deciding whether to walk, jog or run intervals, only on the water. The harder you paddle, the more strenuous the workout.

Depending on the location, expect to encounter marine wildlife. In this area, dolphins are aplenty and may come within feet of your kayak. Manatees, river otters and various fish reside here, too. Many local companies that rent kayaks also have guided eco-tours and dolphin tours.

Check in with a local outfi ter for dol-phin and nature boat cruises, fishing and sailboat charters, kayaking, kiteboarding, crabbing, parasailing, waterskiing, tubing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding, jet skiing and power boating.

KAYAK BROAD CREEKThis seven-mile saltwater river is the heart of Hilton Head Island and is the prime place to spot water birds such as egrets, pelicans, blue herons and sandpipers. You will often see dolphin or watermen harvesting crabs the traditional way. All three public marinas on Broad Creek offer rentals. If you bring your own kayak,

a good launching point is the boat landing next to Old Oyster Factory. Be sure to keep an eye on the tide. You don’t want to get stuck on the razor-sharp oyster beds. Go against the tide on your way out and ride it back in.

SPOT A DOLPHINIn Orlando, you’ll pay $80 to watch the world’s saddest dolphins mull about their depressing enclosures. You can see them free here, frolicking in their natural habitat. More than 200 live here full-time and many more are migratory. A good place to spot them is on the island’s southern tip, where Calibogue Sound meets the Atlantic Ocean. You can get even closer by renting a boat or booking a nature tour for around $25 an hour.

RENT A BOATIf you didn’t bring a boat, you can rent one by the hour or by the day. Rentals of all sizes are available all year, allowing you to explore our numerous waterways at your own pace. Visit Daufuskie Island or find the infamous May River sandbar (aka Rednick Riviera), where folks from all walks of life gather to party. The sandbar appears once a day on receding tides and can only be reached by boat.

LEARN TO SKIMBOARDThe surfboards only come out when a storm is coming or going. Our waves may be wimpy for hanging 10, but they’re perfect for the popular and extremely dangerous sport of skimboarding. Unlike surfing, skimboarding begins on the beach by dropping the board onto the thin wash of previous waves. Skimboarders use their momentum to skim out to breaking waves, which they catch back into shore in a manner similar to surfing. The end result is usually a faceplant.

STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDGet a new perspective on Hilton Head – standing right there in the water. It requires all kinds of balance, and you may take a tumble or two into the drink, but trust us — it’s easier than you think, and you can do it.

FLY HIGH WITH A JETPACKMaybe the coolest water adventure is HHI Jetpack. The business operates out of Shelter Cove Marina. The water propels you forward while you’re completely weightless in the air. First time pilots experience the thrill of flight while your certified instructor controls the throttle remotely. It’s the ultimate water toy.

GO CRABBING ON THE CRABBER J IIThey laughed when I said I was going with the kids to catch some crabs. They are not laughing anymore. What we did was make reservations on the sport crabbing boat Crabber J II which departs out of Shelter Cove Harbour. Once everyone was on board, the Crabby crew untied the lines and we motored out to the calm waters of Broad Creek. Along the way we saw two dolphins playing. We anchored in the shallow water right next to the salt marsh and everyone fi shed for blue crabs. It was a lot of fun. The crabby crew kept score and a girl from Cincinnati won the world famous Crabber J II T-shirt cause she caught the most crabs. Please call for current prices.

Blessed with natural beauty, white sandy beaches and temperate climate, Hilton Head Island has earned a reputation as one of the most family friendly vacation destinations in the United States.

At the top of many must visit lists is a climb to the summit of the iconic lighthouse in Harbourtown.

Visitors will learn about the island’s rich natural history and are rewarded for their climb with spectacular views of Harbourtown Golf Links, Harbourtown Yacht Basin and Calibogue Sound.

Active families enjoy eco-kayak or stand-up paddle board-ing tours through salt marsh estuaries, where naturalists and photographers have frequent sightings of bald eagles, hawks and osprey.

Thrill seekers will enjoy a visit to ZipLine Hilton Head for an adventuresome canopy tour. Dolphin sightseeing tours, sailing trips, parasailing, waterskiing and tubing are especially popular.

A custom pirate ship is outfi ted for a pirate adventure tour. Sport fishing charters, night shark trips and a catamaran sunset cruise are also available.

A boat trip to Daufuskie Island offers a glimpse of what other sea islands were like before bridges and causeways opened them to development. Most native residents of the island are descendants of freed slaves, who have made their living oys-tering and fishing for decades.

Family-oriented singer, songwriter Gregg Russell can be found performing beneath the famous Liberty Tree six nights per week throughout the summer season.

At Lawton Stables a guided trail ride through the scenic Sea Pines Forest Preserve is offered. Young children will treasure a visit with Callie, the island’s pet deer.

A visit to Coligny Beach is an open invitation for people watching, where the flip-flop-tappin rhythm of steel drums and Jimmy Buffet songs sets a casual mood.

Jennifer Moscar of Atlanta, formerly of Bluffton, took pho-tographs of chocolate ice cream mustaches on her two young children as they splashed and danced through the water spouts in the Coligny Beach Fountains.

Thousands of family’s annually enjoy Harbourfest at Shelter Cove, where Shannon Tanner has entertained audiences for the past 25 years. Live entertainment, bouncy houses, food, arts and crafts, and a Tuesday evening fi eworks display are featured.

For the Freeland family of Rochester, New York, an afternoon at Islander’s Beach was an opportunity to construct an elabo-rate sand castle of a giant alligator, drawing admiration from a family of four on Fat Tire bicycles out for an evening ride along the shore.

Many families also enjoy championship caliber golf, ten-nis, cycling and miniature golf. Others relax during a game of bocce or kite flying A children’s museum, video arcade, bowl-ing alley and several movie theaters are also available.

LAGOON FISHINGMost of the lagoons on Hilton Head are brackish, meaning

they are both fresh and salt water. Lagoons offer a unique fishin experience because of the variety of species you can hook. Don’t let the calm waters fool you; fish can grow to enormous sizes (red drum can weigh more than 50 pounds).

Other fish caught in the lagoons include tarpon, striped bass, black drum and the occasional blue fish Live bait such as shrimp and finger mullet are your best bets, but they are usually hard to come by unless you catch your own or are fishing off of a private charter boat. Spinning and top water lures fished with a lightweight spin rod are another popular option. If you have a few hours to spend on the water, a charter boat will supply you with all the equipment, bait, and know-how needed to land a monster. SURF FISHING

There are a lot of junk fish (skates, rays, small sharks) in the Carolina surf, which can be thrilling to catch, but frustrating for those in pursuit of game fish Red drum, kingfish and flounde are some of the more prized fish that can be caught. Squid strips, minnows and bunker chunks are the most common types of bait used in the surf.

They can be purchased at any tackle shop along with 2- to 3-ounce sinkers to combat the rough water. Don’t feel like you have to cast halfway to the horizon to catch fish some of the big-gest can be taken right out of the breaking waves.

The best times to surf fish are early mornings and evenings, when the beach crowds have subsided and the fish are most active. OFFSHORE FISHING

If you are feeling particu-larly adventurous, and willing to spend a majority of the day surrounded by water, offshore fishing can provide some real thrills. Party boats generally accommodate large numbers of passengers, but private charters are also available (at a higher cost). Half and full day trips are typical. These trips generally target fish that are specific to the season, and can include marlin, tuna and cobia. Most offer specialized shark fishing trips all year. Your vessel may travel many miles out to sea, so be sure to have your Dramamine on hand if you are prone to sea-sickness.

CULTURE ■

Consider the typical visitor, on the island for a quick getaway and often intent on chasing golf balls, surviving beach bike

rambles and maybe savoring an evening libation or two listening to Jimmy Buffett cover tunes at some torch-lighted island eatery.

Cool. We can do that. And very well, thank you.

But, as so many can attest, today’s tourist often becomes tomorrow’s year-round resident, and once they get past “Margaritaville” they’ll discover local musicians playing original rock, blues and electronic dance music in venues that are off the beaten path and bear no artistic connection to Mr. B or the hormone-fueled Barmuda Triangle.

World-class musicians work nightly at the Jazz Corner, serving up swing, trad-jazz standards and rhythm & blues for more seasoned locals and visitors, but if you’re in the mood for much older classics track down the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, now in its 34th

season playing at First Presbyterian Church. There’s also the well-regarded Hilton Head Choral Society and the well-attended International Piano Competition that draws some of the world’s finest young players to First Presbyterian. And the Hilton Head Dance Theater further bolsters our cultural credibility.

The Heritage Golf Tournament remains our biggest tourist (and traffic) draw, but soon-arriving data will show that visitors counts for productions at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina have pushed that venue firmly into second place. “I always enjoy going to plays at the Arts Center because you get such high-quality pro-ductions performed in such an intimate setting,” said long-time island resident Isabel Mangan. Folks looking for more progressive one-act productions can turn to South Carolina Repertory where Hank Haskell and spouse seat barely 70 patrons in a tiny theater on Beach City Road. The Art League of Hilton Head, which shares space with the Arts Center,

displays all manner of paintings, jewelry and artworks on a rotating basis and there’s a growing roster of smaller gal-leries scattered about the island. Our museum scene is anchored by the pasto-ral Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn just as financing continues to grow toward creating a full-fledged Gullah Museum that truly celebrates our diverse culture.

“Years ago this was just a beach town,” said Sheri Sternitzke, chairman of the Main Street Theater that incorporates non-equity actors aged five to 82 for its annual productions. “Now we’re becoming year-round and I think a lot of people are amazed by how much we now have to offer. And there’s going to be more to come.”

No doubt this short-form essay has excluded deserving additions, but here’s a tip for a more encompassing look at island cultural offerings: The Arts and Cultural Council of Hilton Head oper-ates a website/calendar about upcoming events in almost every category.

LOVE...AND... LOCALS DO, TOO

BY BARRY KAUFMAN

For many, a trip to Hilton Head Island or Bluffton isn’t complete without a stop at one of the region’s many

landmark restaurants. Here are 17 places loved by both locals and visitors from all

over the world.

Signe's Heaven Bound Bakery and CafeSet far away from the main thoroughfares of the island amid the light industrial parks of Arrow Road, Signee’s should not have succeeded. The fact that Signe’s has not only kept going since 1972, but continues to rack up awards and accolades, shows that location doesn’t matter when you whip up baked goods that are nothing short of heavenly.

SEA SHACKThe phrase “Hilton Head’s Best-Kept Secret” was basically invented for The Sea Shack. The seafood has always been in-credible, the “help yourself” tub of beers and ice water has always set the stage for a brilliantly laid-back atmosphere, and the long lines have always been the price you pay for shar-ing the best-kept secret with a thousand or so friends.

Salty Dog Café

Simply put, this is the island’s premier iconic restaurant. There’s a reason why you can find Salty Dog

T-Shirts from Africa to Alaska – people come from all points of the globe to

sample the delicious seafood, get their picture taken with Jake, and

soak in the waterfront views.

KuramaThe sushi on Hilton Head is as good or better than anything you will fin outside of Japan (New York City and San Fran included). That reputation was created by the masters at Kurama, who have been honoring taste and tradition for more than 20 years. Whether it be a teppanyaki-style offering prepared right before your eyes or a mouth-watering creation from the sushi bar, Kurama prides itself on using only the freshest ingredients.

The Tiki Hut

Just off Coligny Beach Park is an island institution that nearly every die-hard local can point to as the place they decided they

were calling Hilton Head Island home. With an appetizing array

of frozen drinks, wraparound views of Coligny Beach, and

endless action on the volleyball courts, this is the place locals

become visitors and vice-versa.

Michael Anthony's The first name in Italia cuisine on Hilton Head Island, Michael Anthony’s hits the sweet spot between authenticity, accessibility and sophistication. They know their wine, they know their Italian food and they’ll even share their knowledge with their famed cooking classes.

The Crazy CrabIts two locations will get you coming and going, whether it’s at the North End’s location on the banks of Jarvis Creek or the South End’s location in the heart of Harbour Town. Both benefit f om a loyal following of locals and visitors, pristine views of their respective waterways, and a mouth-watering menu of seafood favorites.

OMBRAPopular local chef Michael Cirafesi and distinguished Philadelphia chef Nunzio Patruno have teamed up to open this upscale Italian restaurant in the Village at Wexford. Many dishes were created hundreds of years ago, passed down from generation to generation.

Sea Grass GrillEThis place regularly wins “Best Seafood” in Hilton Head Monthly’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards. Chef Chad Newman has built a strong local following by creating simple dishes made with the fresh-est ingredients he can find Diners can watch him work his match every night in the open kitchen, located in an intimate yet casual Lowcountry beach house setting.

Alfred’sEuropean-trained chef Alfred Ket-tering combines some of the most appealing elements of classic American and Continental cuisine in this tiny Plantation Center hideaway.

Cahill's MarketSet on a real working farm, Cahill’s Market is a step back in time right down to the display case full of glass Ne-Hi bottles. Produce right from the farm compliments a menu of down-home favorites including some of the best fried chicken you’ll find on this planet Farm-to-table before it was trendy, Cahill’s Market has earned its stature as a Bluffton institution.

The CottageThe Cottage’s amazing location right in the heart of Bluffton along Calhoun Street brings you in. A wide array of delicious baked goods and Panini sandwiches brings you back. Offering the chance to take your lunch right on Calhoun Street, with all the entrancing people watching that entails, The Cottage tops its location with a varied menu that makes it one of Bluffton’s must-visit restaurants.

FRENCH BAKERYOld-world expertise and a slavish dedication to getting the tiniest of details perfect make the baked goods at The French Bakery and Courtyard Café to die for, but it’s not all baked goods here. The delectable selection of quiches, tantalizing sandwiches and lush salads round out a true culinary experience.

Palmetto Bay Sunrise CaféConsistent winners in nearly every restaurant awards pool on the island, Palmetto Bay Sunrise Café delivers the goods with a breakfast menu that does the classics and does them right, and a lunch menu that offers more than its share of tasty surprises. If there’s a better place to enjoy sunrise, a cup of joe and an omelet… come to think of it, there isn’t.

Charlies L’etoile VerteThis family owned and operated restaurant specializes in fresh seafood, lamb and steak. The menu is written by hand each day based on the freshest ingredients available. A popular spot for both lunch and dinner.

HILTON HEAD ICE CREAMThe secret to Hilton Head Ice Cream, so the legend goes, is the salt air that winds up whipped into every homemade batch of artisanal ice cream. Whether that’s true or not, it’s hard to argue that Hilton Head Ice

Cream makes some of the tastiest ice cream in the

world, all from its recently renovated New Orleans

Rd. storefront.

Bluffton Oyster Co.Specializing in fresh local seafood, The Bluffton Oyster Company is known for its fresh, local oysters, clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops and fish filet Want a taste of the May River? Order from this menu.

FRANKIE BONESIt’s hard to classify the cuisine at Frankie Bones as anything other than “cool.” The décor is inspired by the timeless cool of the Rat Pack and all their trendsetting ilk, and that same devotion to style can be found in the menu. Whether a simple pasta dish, a steak or any of the various seafood creations, everything on the menu at Frankie Bones stands out in its own stylish way.

WHERE THE VIEWS ARE AS STUNNING AS THE MEALS

WHERE THE VIEWS ARE AS STUNNING AS THE MEALS

Paradise is all around us, but even the locals know that the ultimate relaxation on the island is a great meal with a stunning water view. Fortunately for you, this list of Lowcountry proprietors has perfected this

unbeatable combination.

ELA’s Blu Water GrilleThe 2014 Taste of the Season winner has also been recognized by

Monthly as the perfect date night and special occasion spot, and for good reason. Freshly caught seafood and perfectly cooked steaks

are the mainstays of chef Ryan Alpaugh’s menu, and the casual but intimately romantic garden patio and artwork of local artist Pete Karis

accent the waterfront views perfectly.

BY TIM WOOD

Bistro 17Owner Jim Buckingham and his staff have crafted the perfect duo of cozy and chic at this Shelter Cove eatery. Fresh-from-scratch appetizers and entrees are the signature of this French-infused bistro. The huge wooden rack inside sets the mood for a laid-back night and dogs are always welcome to take in dinner with their owners on the patio.

PoseidonOne of the newest entries to the waterfront dining scene, boast-ing a rooftop bar overlooking the cove and located next to the new waterfront park at Shelter Cove Towne Centre. An oyster bar, outdoor dining area and a VIP lounge are among the highlights of this latest infusion to the island nightlife scene, where country line dancing has already become a Wednesday night staple.

QUARTERDECK & TOPSIDE

WATERFRONT RESTAURANTGolf fans who take in the

RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing have long marveled

at the spectacular views at this Sea Pines icon. The moored yachts, the 18th green of Harbour Town

Golf Links and the calming waters of Calibogue Sound

are all within your view. The Quarterdeck provides a pub-style menu with Angus burgers, tortilla wraps and caramel apple pie, while

Topside offers a more elegant, seafood-focused dining experience to take

in the best views of the island’s waterfront sunsets.

Hudson’s Seafood House On the DocksThe restaurant with one of the best views of Port Royal Sound also takes much of its signature shrimp from the sound — one of two remaining shrimping op-erations on the islands uses the Hudson’s dock in exchange for the restaurant having first righ of refusal on its catch. The décor is simple and old school and the boat-shaped gift shop kitschy, but the food and the views are still top notch.

SEA PINES BEACH CLUBThe forefather of all Hilton Head water views, the 40-year-old jewel

got a $10 million facelift that has accentuated everything we’ve ever loved about the club. The newly renovated club includes Coast, an

upscale eatery and oceanfront bar; Surfside Market for quick eats like salads and sandwiches; and the Ocean Lounge, a second-floor bar

with elevated views of the ocean.

Old Oyster FactoryThis Marshland Road staple was voted one of the top 100 scenic view restaurants by Open Table. Built on the site of an early 1900s oyster cannery, the restaurant honors the his-tory of the Broad Creek fishe -man with some of the area’s finest s afood. For more than 25 years, diners have enjoyed a succulent meal while taking in the marshland landscape.

Up the Creek Pub and GrillA seafood shack that can also boast some of the best barbecue in the area? Indeed, that’s what you’ll find he e. This Simmons Road spot has managed to create a down-home atmosphere with a beachcomber vibe overlooking Broad Creek, not to mention a menu that features succulent burgers and finge -licking pulled pork sandwiches.

Old Fort PubThis Skull Creek eatery consistent-ly delivers on the promise of the most elegant and romantic nights out in the Lowcountry. The sunset views through the trees lining the outdoor seating area are among the most spectacular you will see on Hilton Head. The simple yet exquisite American & Lowcoun-try-focused food offerings and extensive, award-winning wine list are the cherry on top.

Black MarlinThis Palmetto Bay Marina

dockside favorite is one of the best spots for boat watching in

the area thanks to its expan-sive patio. Seafood and steaks are the menu mainstays, but

the Key West vibe is unmistak-able. The sushi nachos and

fish tacos are mouthwatering. The waterside Hurricane Bar is a must, as is the weekend

eggs Benedict brunch.

LEGENDARY LOWCOUNTRY DISHES

LOBSTER MAC & CHEESE AT RED FISH

One of Red Fish's most popular — and most decadent — menu items. It combines chunks

of fresh North Atlantic lobster with ribbed elbow macaroni, heavy cream and mascar-pone, pepper jack and Boursin cheeses to

create a creamy delight that is to die for. Finished with heavenly white truffl e oil. It can

be ordered as an entree or side.

SHRIMP & GRITS AT THE LUCKY ROOSTER

KITCHEN + BARThe Lucky Rooster Kitchen + Bar's sig-

nature shrimp and grits entree changes seasonally. No matter the season, the dish boasts white Carolina shrimp, Anson Mills

grits and fl avorful Andouille sausage. In the spring, the dish also features English peas, asparagus, wild mushrooms and smoked tomato butter, while the winter version is made of butternut squash, red Russian

kale and a creole mustard sauce.

BAGEL BACON BURGER AT ISLAND BAGEL & DELI

One look at Island Bagel & Deli's menu and it's clear that bagels are no longer just

a breakfast food. At first glance the res-taurant's most popular burger — the bagel bacon burger — looks just like an average

burger topped with bacon, but that's where things get really interesting. Customers can have their burgers served on any of

Island Bagel & Deli's 14 bagel varieties and topped with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and

onions, plus their choice of condiments.

GROUPER MELT AT CAPTAIN WOODY'S

Out of all the signature fish sandwiches o Captain Woody's menu, the best-selling grouper melt reigns supreme. Woody's fries a generous piece of grouper in a

crispy batter, tops it with cheese, onions and mushrooms, and serves it, open-faced,

on a fresh kaiser roll.

THE CHAMP BURGER AT CHARBAR CO.

The Champ is, without a doubt, the most popular burger on the menu at Charbar Co. Made from carefully selected, house-ground beef that is specially seasoned, char-grilled to order and served on a toasted brioche bun with sharp ched-dar cheese, bacon marmalade, Dijon

mustard and dill pickles, it's easy to see why the burger won readers' choice

“best burger” awards from Hilton Head Monthly and The Island Packet.

HOTELSUsually located oceanfront, the full service hotel

offers a wide array of services, housekeeping, room service, full service in house restaurants and a variety of shops, along with concierge services and various spas, recreational facilities and children’s activities. The Westin in Port Royal Plantation, Marriott and Omni in Palmetto Dunes Plantation, Sonesta in Shipyard Plantation and the Holiday Inn Beach House by Coligny circle are examples. Prices vary by the season.

Visiting the Lowcountry? First you need to determine the right type of place to stay. There are a variety of accommoda-tion types on Hilton Head Island. From

intimate boutique inns to sprawling timeshare resorts, oceanfront rental homes and four and five-star hotels, accommodations on Hilton Head Island have enough variety to please every travel style and budget.

LODGING ■

A number of Hilton Head hotels have just undergone major renovations, refreshing the look and feel of the popular resorts. The Westin underwent a $30 million renovation with an improved pool, deck and fitness studio.

The Sonesta also underwent a $30 million renovation result-ing in an expanded pool deck and terrace surrounding a lagoon-style pool, a shade pool as well as new cabanas, out-door beds and umbrellas.

Other major oceanfront resorts have recently completed extensive renovations, including the Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Hotel’s $17 million renovation adding a third pool and renovations to all 323 guest rooms.

The Beach House completed a $5 million renovation of its 202 guest rooms and public spaces. The Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa underwent a renovation as well. Others resorts have plans to begin renovations in the near future.

If you are looking for something a bit smaller, boutique inns located in Sea Pines at Harbour Town and South Beach in Sea Pines offer the same level of service though a bit further from the beach, offer a charm all their own. Perfect for a romantic getaway or a peaceful week away. With luxuries befi ting the finest hotels, The Inn at Harbour Town offers a unique variety of first-class accommodations within The Sea Pines Resort.

Traditional chain hotel/motels are located mainly along the 278 corridor, and are outside of the plantations. Prices are lower than the full service hotels, but you will not have the same amenities as the larger resorts.

RENT A HOMEVacation home and villa rentals are available in most of the

South End plantations. From ocean front homes and villas to off-the-beaten-path destinations you can decide based upon your budget and desired amenities, beach, tennis, golf, fis -ing. Don’t be afraid of the larger 6-8 bedroom homes as they can be split by multiple families and the prices won’t work out as high as you might think.

Or, look for a vacation villa. Here, you can rent a fully fur-nished home, enjoy the extra space to spread out and the full size kitchen. If you are a tennis or golf lover, you can often rent a villa close to the course.

Several rental companies on the island specialize in help-ing you find the perfect vacation home, whether it is a cozy villa for one or two persons or a seven-bedroom spacious home for a family. Be sure to give them a call, they are very knowledgable to the different areas and can help you find the perfect rental.

In fact, it’s very common for families to use rental homes on Hilton Head Island as the perfect place for a family reunion where they enjoy the extra space, kitchen facilities and a per-sonal pool.

Hilton Head rental homes can offer an oceanfront view, pet-friendly accommodations or condos and villas with golf course views. No matter your preference — hotel or rental home — there is something for everyone.

RELOCATE TO OURparadise1. PEACE OF MIND

As the world around us seems to get more turbulent, there is something very reassuring about living in Bluffton, Hilton Head or anywhere in between Beaufort and Savannah. Our world in the Lowcountry seems pretty darn normal, and for once, that is a really good thing.

2. NATURAL BEAUTYThere are only a few places in North America

that can rival the beautiful surroundings we live in. Mother Nature blessed us with incredible beaches, pristine tidal creeks, calming marshes, pluff mud and Spanish moss. Great vision and planning allows us to live in harmony with all the natural beauty.

3. CLIMATEWinter here is unpredictable. It can be 80

degrees one day and 30 degrees the next. Compared to the road-blocking snowstorms just a few hours to the north though, we’ve got

it pretty good. Conditions greatly improve in April and stay really nice through the end of October. We also have many nice and sunny days November through March. You will have to travel south of Vero Beach to find warmer weather.

4. GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITY

Direct flights from SAV now include 13 major destinations: Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Memphis, Miami, NYC, Newark, Philadelphia and Washington. Within driving distance we can access three growing metropolitan areas — Atlanta, Charlotte and Jacksonville. We can escape to acres and acres of nature in the rural areas of South Carolina and the charms of the mountains of North Carolina. We are nestled between the two most historic and architecturally beautiful cities in the south — Charleston and Savannah. With the widening of U.S. 17, access is becoming easier than ever.

■ REAL ESTATE

Many Hilton Head Island and Bluffton residents were once visi-

tors, like you. They just never left. And why should you? The quality of life here is very high. Here are 10 reasons why you should consider making this your new home.

5. GROWING ECONOMIC DIVERSITYWe still heavily depend on the two main drivers of our econ-

omy — tourism and retirement. But new trends are emerging. Young people and families in their prime choose the Lowcountry as their nesting grounds. They bring with them their talents, ideas and energy; combined with the ability to work remotely, this will create a more diversified economic picture and will drive the median age down. The Don Ryan Center for Innovation (also referred to as Bluffton incubator) is just one example of how the region is actively trying to cultivate a spirit of entrepreneurship and make it part of what will drive the future.

6. SAVANNAH HOSTS 12 MILLION VISITORS A YEAR

Savannah’s relatively recent surge as a major getaway destina-tion will have a trickle-down effect for our regions as millions of people who haven fallen in love with the “Southern Charm” will be looking for a different experience and/or consider a longer vacation.

7. CULTURAL, RECREATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL CHOICES

It was only 10 years ago when our choices were very fairly limited when it came to active sports, cultural and educational choices. No longer so. Regardless of what you want to learn or do or experience, chances are you can find an event, a place or club, a class or a teacher to make it happen.

8. THE MAKER AND LOCAL MOVEMENTTired of the cheaply mass produced and imported stuff, there

is a resurgence of “do it yourself and sell it” going on all over America, and the Lowcountry is a fertile ground for such endeav-ors. You would be amazed of all the interesting products that are produced right here or within a 100 mile radius.

9. 10,000 BABY BOOMERS A DAY RETIREYes, these are the official statistics and it will continue at this

pace for almost two decades (begging the question if it will bankrupt Social Security). The profile of the typical retiree how-ever has changed. Not only will they live longer, they are vibrant, still wanting to change the world and become an important part of the fabric of our community, bringing with them not only their assets, but experience, connections and in some cases attract the following generation to move here as well.

10. WELCOMING PEOPLE AND INTELLECTUAL DIVERSITY

One of the reasons people have chosen the Lowcountry as their place of choice is because we are a very welcoming com-munity attracting a wide variety of people who have lived all over the world before moving here, which simply makes it a more interesting place to live than many other areas.
