Alpha Team — How to make a cloak The teachers put us in groups and read a legend story. First we were given a piece of paper. Second we needed to dye a white piece of paper. We outlined our cloak. The piece of dyed paper needed to be cut out. Using a helper they helped hot glue gun the feathers. This was important because you want it to be colourful and the colours represent the story. Principal ’ s Ponderings…

Kia Ora Parents, This will be our final newsletter for the term. There are a few things of interest I would like to share with you: Staff Leaving: We will be farewelling Mr Phil Millerick (Y7-10 Science Teacher) next week as he has decided to return to the New Zealand Correspondence School. Mr Millerick arrived at the beginning of last year serving our school community for approximately 18 months. It will be sad to see him leave but we do wish him every success and God’s richest blessings as he begins another season in his career. We are thrilled to welcome the return of Mrs Amber Tucker who will be teaching these classes for the first few weeks of Term 3 while we seek to appoint a new Science teacher. Please pray for wisdom and guidance as the appointment’s team process the various applicants for this position. School Closure: I thought it would be worthwhile to remind the school community as to what our procedure of communication is when there may be a possibility of our school closing due to adverse conditions such as severe weather, natural disasters, and so forth. A decision will be made by 7.30am and if you are unsure on whether the school is open, PLEASE follow these options: a) check our website for a current message, b) ring the school and choose the cancellation’s option to listen to our message or c) check to see if you have received a text from the school – this is for those who have signed up for the school text service. If there is no message by 7.30am on the website, cancellation answer phone service or school text service to indicate that the school is closed, you can safely assume that Hillview will be officially open. We will try and inform Newstalk ZB if the school does close and hope they will publicly announce this soon after 7.30am. Please help the school and protect the sanity of the office ladies by refraining from ringing the school and asking them if Hillview is open. I want to re-assure you that there is much thought invested into making a decision around whether our school closes and it is not taken lightly. If you genuinely think it is unsafe to bring your child to school, you are welcome to make that decision as parents – if you choose to keep them at home, ensure that you leave a message at the school explaining their absence. We would also ask for you not to instruct your child to carry around their cell phone with them at school. If you urgently need to get hold of your child, contact the school office and the message will be relayed to the appropriate person as soon as possible. Primary Enterprise Programme (PrEP): This excellent

project provides a unique opportunity for the entire school to be involved. Y0-4 pupils visit the market day and are most willing consumers (along with their parents!), Y5-6 pupils are employees, Y7-8 & 10 pupils are the employers while the Y9 pupils serve this micro-economy by fulfilling the various roles of the government such as organising the warehouse, bank, real estate, services, marketing, radio station, videography, and photography. I am greatly encouraged to observe a wide range of children using their entrepreneurial skills in order to run their business well. You may be interested that no profit is returned to the school. The Year 10 pupils have the privilege of choosing which worthwhile charitable organisation would benefit the most from receiving it. The PrEP market day is on tomorrow from 11am – 2pm. Please come and support the students if you are able to make the time. I know that they will appreciate it.

Year 3-6 Production: The very first Y3-6 production entitled, Seussical the Musical will be held in the third week of next

term (Thursday 15 August and Friday 16 August). There are many benefits for pupils involved in a production. Not only does it allow for a wide array of gifts and talents to be developed, it also teaches the children some excellent qualities to be cherished in life such as determination, perseverance, co-operation, patience, trust, generosity, service, and courage. I have heard that the cast of approximately 120 children have been practising very hard to make it a very special occasion and I would strongly urge you to attend. I believe tickets (only 800) will be available next week and it will be a first in first served basis. Reports: School reports will be completed and sent home next week. Y0-8 reports will be based around the

National Standards of Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. There will also be a section that reflects the appropriate key competencies. Y9/10 pupils will receive their Principal Award reports that will indicate their child’s progress in being organised, completing homework, attitude, classwork completion and all appropriate materials being brought to class. Both sets of reports should clearly communicate the progress of your child and there should be no significant surprises. Please see you child’s teacher if you have any further questions or you are encouraged to make an appointment for the optional parent/teacher interviews next term. I do wish you many wonderful memories as you celebrate the holidays together. Many Blessings Steve Frost (Principal)

Tips for Learning

Helping a Y3-6 child with reading (by Andy Vosslamber)

After the alphabetic principle has been grasped and children are becoming fluent in their reading, the next steps in helping them to read involve encouraging good comprehension as well as accurate

decoding. Here are some suggestions as to what you could do:

Encourage the reading of non-fiction that includes reading the captions that go with diagrams and photos. Talk about the content of non-fiction books and link that content to other non-fiction books or life experiences that your child has had. Build the idea that information can be gained from the reading of non-fiction and that this information can help with general understanding of the world around us.

Pupil Achievements

Congratulations Basketball Champions – On Tuesday our Y5/6 girls'

basketball team played outstandingly well in the Canterbury Primary Schools' basketball tournament to go undefeated during the day. They won their semi-final and final very convincingly. Congratulations to the girls on their impressive performance. Primary Sports Canterbury Cross Country – We were

very proud of our 13 runners that took part with 1500 others last Wednesday in very muddy and wet ground conditions in the Primary Sports Canterbury Cross Country Championships at Halswell Quarry. Luke Mitchell ran an awesome race to place 7th out of 130 Year 6 boys to qualify

for the Primary Sports Canterbury Cross Country team for the second year in a row. Not far behind him, in 14th was Michael Hermens - what an outstanding effort! Oliver Graves was 22nd in the Year 5 Boys race and a member of the South Zone team that placed 3rd. Josh Walker ran a well-judged race in the Year 8 Boys’ 3km to qualify in the top 20 for the races next week when the Year 7 and 8 Primaries take on the top 20 in the Intermediates.

Noticeboard

2.1 Sibling New Entrants 2014 – Do you have a younger child due to start here at Hillview during 2014? Please fill in an application form as soon as possible if you haven’t already done so. Applications close for all 2014 new entrants, (including siblings) on Friday 30 August 2013.

2.2 Opening Hours Over the Holidays – The school office and uniform shop will be closed for the July school holidays. Please ensure you have attended to all school matters by Friday 12 July. The office will re-open at 8.00am on July 29. The Uniform shop is open from 2.30-4.00pm tomorrow Friday July 5, next Friday 12 July and on Friday 2 August.

2.3 School Reports – These will be coming home next Thursday with your eldest child.

2.4 Road Works – Be advised that for the rest of the term access to school will be more difficult due to road works in Wilsons Road and Clouston St (by the bowling club). Please avoid adding to the congestion by trying to drop off and collect your

child in the school carparks. Instead, get your child to meet you further down Gamblins or St Martins Roads, Wades Ave, or the New World car park. Thank you.

2.5 Term 2 Statements – These are attached to your newsletter today.

2.6 Lost Uniform - We have constant reports of lost uniform, including pinafores, polar fleeces, shoes etc. Please check your child has brought home the uniform that belongs to them. With children changing in and out of PE gear during the school day a lot of items go missing. Please have a sort out at home before the holidays as this can be very stressful for families on low incomes particularly. Many thanks.

2.7 PE Tops – These have arrived for those who have ordered them (size 12 and 14). Has your child’s lettering started coming off their PE top? Please drop these to the office on the last day of this term, Friday 12 July, and these will be fixed over the holidays. We strongly encourage you to do this as your children are representing Hillview and we want to keep the level of uniform to a high standard.

2.8 New Entrants – All children in Room 8 will be moving on to Room 7 with their new teacher Mrs den Hollander at the start of Term 3 (unless already told that their child is staying with Mrs Harland).

2.9 Dental Care over the School Holidays – The Community Dental Service will operate an emergency service over the holidays. This service is to provide relief of pain only and will not undertake ‘routine’ treatment. The service will be available each working day from 8.30am until 12.30pm from the Hillmorton Community Clinic, Sylvan Street, Christchurch for the following times: Monday 15 July 2013 – Friday 19 July 2013 (excluding weekends) and Monday 22 July 2013 – Friday 26 July (excluding weekends) This service will operate by appointment only and if we are unable to see your child, alternative options will be given. If your child has dental pain as a result of an accident please contact your dentist in the first instance. You can phone and make an appointment for the emergency clinic by ringing 3354222.

2.10 Scholastic – Orders for these books close on Wednesday 10 July. If you would like a brochure they are available from the office.
