TWO Authors Visit Hillside We had great fortune to host two authors in February! Our K-3 students interacted with the author of Shark Lady, Jess Keating. Everyone in her presentation were turned into scientists and made new discoveries about sharks. Ask your student - how long is a whale shark? How did we measure it? Our 4-8 students had the opportunity to interact and ask questions with Helaine

Becker, author of Monster Science. It was a monstrously good time! How much might an author make on one book that the publisher sells for $16.99? Your students will know!

Girls Basketball Wins Bronze!

On February 27th, the Hillside Girls Basketball team participated in a round-robin tournament at The Woodlands. It was a day of competition , sportsmanship, and Timberwolf pride! They fought hard and brought home the bronze medal. A special thank you to Nish (gr. 8) for being an amazing assistant coach. Ms. Rossi, Mrs. Morrison, and the entire Hillside community are so proud of your efforts! Job well done ladies.

Grade 5-8 Students Compete in Scrabble Tournament

Established in 2008, School SCRABBLE® Canada is a not-for-profit group of interested teachers, parents and avid SCRABBLE® players making strides toward bringing the game of

SCRABBLE® into classrooms across the country for use as a fun educational tool. Under the supervision of Mrs. Mulcaster and Ms. Tugby, pairs of students from grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 will travel to Morning Star Middle School to compete in this years Peel Qualifier. Successful teams will advance to the City Championships on Tuesday, March 27th. Go, Timberwolves!

Hillside Choir Receives a Silver Standing at Kiwanis The Hillside PS Choir, under the direction of Mrs McEachran, competed in the Toronto Kiwanis Music Competition. We prepared two songs for Kiwanis “The Lighthouse” and “Kye Kye Kule”. The choir received a high mark of 85 and a silver standing. The competition was a great experience because after our performance we had the opportunity to work with world renowned conductors on our performance pieces.

5A & 5B are Reading All Stars!

Over the past 7 weeks, students in 5A and 5B participated in the Raptor's 905 Winter Warm-Up Reading Challenge. Students competed against a dozen Grade 5 classes across the Peel District School Board to read a variety of fiction and non-fiction books, as well as complete a creative book review for every book read. Stay tuned for the results of the Challenge, which will be announced at our celebration day at the Hershey Centre on February 27th. Congratulations, to all of our star readers!

What’s Going On in Your Library Learning Commons

For the past few weeks students have been using Forest of Reading  texts as a provocations to extend thinking, and create artifacts to communicate learning. Some highlights for our junior and intermediate students have included using Monster Science as a provocation to explore making and viewing werewolf holograms. Other classes explored the text 5 Giraffes and created devices using various loose parts that might feed a giraffe at the zoo. Our primary students explored A Squiggly Story, making and creating their own stories. More recently we read The Little Boy that Lived Down the Drain where we made drains incorporating different kinds of angles (right, acute and obtuse) to send a marble

down to the little boy to play with.

Our second monthly trivia challenge was a great success and rather … loud … with excitement. Students tested their knowledge on Harry Potter and Stranger Things. Thanks to all the students who created the quizzes and those who came out to participate. Students in our Makerclub continue to explore, discover and create.  Making ranges from creating games in Scratch, coding VR worlds in CoSpaces, using physical computing to create robots to sewing sock monkeys, giraffes or elephants. Please ask Ms. Mulcaster to see how you can be involved.

Our library learning commons is a place where inspiration lives. The sharing of ideas, and the collaboration/creation of new discoveries will be paramount to none. We can’t wait to

continue to discover what we will learn from and with each other.

Self Regulation Tip for the Prosocial Domain

Self-regulation in this domain refers to the ability to empathize with others and to demonstrate behaviours that “lead” towards positive social interactions, including making friends and helping others. Prosocial regulation involves an ability to self-regulate in the other four frames.

Can we say that we are almost done with flu season?

Being sick and caring for the sick can be major stressors affecting the Prosocial Domain.

Success story from our community:

Some of our community members have been regularly sharing their success stories with the mindfulness strategies that our students have been practising. “We have been doing the roller coaster breathing at home before bed and noticed a calmer bed time routine.”

Here are some strategies to try:

Mindfulness of Breath

Focus your attention on the sensations of breathing

Mindfulness of Thought

Notice thoughts arising and passing without getting involved in the story.

Body Scan

Focus on each body part in turn, from head to toe.

Kind Wishes Practice

Foster caring feelings for a loved one, for yourself, for others, and gradually the whole world.
