ORDER OF WORSHIP
Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
June 21, 2020
11:00 AM
Reverend Marguerite Sirrine, Interim Pastor Scott Schlesinger, Organist/Choir Director JoAnn Harrison, Secretary
Gathering of the People
Prelude Variations on "No, Not One" by Jon Spong
Welcome and Opening Prayer
Praise of God
Call to Worship (From Genesis 12)
One: Now the LORD said to Abram:
Many: ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that
I will show you.
One: I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so
that you will be a blessing.’
All: Praise the Lord!
* Hymn No. 816 If Thou But Trust in God to Guide Thee
Confession of Sin
Call to Confession
Silent Individual Confession
Prayer of Confession (responsive)
One: Holy God, you have guided us through a wilderness time of transition.
Many: And we have seen manna from heaven.
One: Sometimes we were not sure who to trust, and yet you made your presence known.
Many: We have seen signs and wonders, revelations of the Spirit.
One: Yet Lord, we confess that at times the wilderness got the better of us.
Many: The Mission Study didn’t solve all the church’s problems and took a long time.
Some of us missed a beloved pastor and didn’t connect with the new one. We
disconnected from people with whom we had long associated.
One: The wilderness has tested us; you have tested us; and now we confess that we are
sometimes your people and sometimes not.
All: Yet you are the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. Forgive us, our light
and our salvation. Give us grace that we might be grace, and blessings that we
might be a blessing. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon: Isaiah 43:19
I am about to do a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.
Sharing of God’s Word
Prayer for Illumination
Scripture Reading Exodus 39:32a, 43; 40:32-38 (p. 87)
Conversation with the Children Ann Sebesan
Scripture Reading I Corinthians 13:8-13 (p. 175)
Leader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Sermon In the End Rev. Marguerite Sirrine
Response to the Gospel
* Hymn No. 693 Though I May Speak
Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we
forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
The Offering
Offertory Variations on "No, Not One" by Jon Spong
* Hymn of Dedication No. 606 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow Old One Hundredth
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below;
Praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.
* Prayer of Dedication
*Affirmation of Faith from 2 Corinthians 5:17-20b (in unison)
So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see,
everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ,
and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world
to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of
reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through
us. Amen.
Go Forth to Serve
Invitation to Share and Serve

on the Zoom? Please drop us a note in the church office and we’ll add you to the schedule. We will get
the information to you that is needed for your host Sunday!
As we move forward our plan is that HPC staff will work mostly from home with visits to the church
office on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Phone messages will be checked daily. You can email
Scott or JoAnn at their usual email addresses.
The Youth Group will meet on Wednesday evenings in June from 6:00 – 7:30 PM. Questions? See
Eric Cathey.
We will be collecting our 2020 Pentecost Offering through the end of June. The Pentecost Offering
unites us in a church-wide effort to support young people and inspire them to share their faith, ideas
and gifts with the world. One effort our offering supports is the “Educate a Child, Transform the World
Initiative.” This effort works with partners in the United States and worldwide to provide quality
education to children. Sixty percent of our offering supports programs like this from the Presbyterian
Mission Agency. We want to draw attention to the Jason and Jessica Evans Memorial Scholarship.
Jessica Evans was an active member of the HPC Youth Group before she and her brother were
tragically killed. The other forty percent will be used to provide scholarships for needy children at New
Hope Camp and Conference Center through the Jessica Evans Scholarship. Please, if you can, give
generously. To give online, click on the EasyTithe button on the HPC website. Click “Denominational
Outreach” from the first dropdown list and “Pentecost Offering” from the second. Enter your amount.
You can also email your offering to PO Box 717, Hillsborough NC, 27278. We appreciate your
support of our church and our denomination as it seeks to witness to Christ in new ways.
The Youth Group will meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 – 7:30 PM. Questions? See Eric
Cathey.
Linda Jaubert will be offering a Zoom group discussion on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 pm, based on
the Lectionary lessons that our Sunday School Class uses. We will be reading the scripture passages
that we will be discussing, and encourage you to have your bibles with you to refer to. To participate in
the class please be in touch with Linda. She will forward instructions for connecting to this Zoom
event!
The deadline for the July edition of “The Church Mouse” will be Monday, June 22 at 1:00 PM.
