Anyone considering building a new house will have heard someone mention

structured cabling or smart wiring, and how important it is to be able to use

thetechnologiesavailabletous,andbepreparedforthosethatarejustaround

the corner.

So what are they actually talking about?

The Hills Home Hub delivers and distributes data, phone, video, audio and TV

signals using the latest in data and TV cables from a centrally located enclosure

to specially configured wall outlets in any room of your choice. Structured

cabling using the Hills Home Hub is preferably planned at the same time as

your electrical wiring. The central enclosure is home to the devices that enable

the delivery and distribution of these signals. It also houses

the security system central controller.** An ideal location for the central enclosure

is a garage or utility room.

It is important to plan in which rooms you would like to access data, phone,

video, audio and TV. This planning is important to you now and to future

owners of your home because it adds flexibility and value. The use of a room

could change over time. A nursery now will become a teenager's bedroom,

and possibly a study or home office in the future. In order to access or share

these signals, cables along with wall outlets, containing standard data and TV

entertainment points need to be installed.

Supervise your children as they play in the back yard while you're

preparing lunch. The video picture is sent from the outdoor security

camera via the Hills Home Hub cables, through the central enclosure

to a selected television in any room of your home, so your children

can continue playing safely, even when you are not physically there

to watch them.

Video Distribution

With the Hills Home Hub, you don't have to leave what you're doing

to answer the security gate or front door when the buzzer is pressed.

Simply pick up the remote to select the television channel

programmed for the front gate camera and see who's there. A phone

system with intercom and gate release features can then be used

to send a signal via the Hills Home Hub cables, through the central

enclosure, to release the electric latch on the gate and invite your

guests in. Using the phone system as an intercom, speak to a family

member in another room to tell them their friends have arrived.

Anyone can access the internet via a centralised server modem to

surf the net from any computer in the home. A web page like

www.hillshomehub.com.au can be selected to print. The signal

travels via the Hills Home Hub cables, through the central enclosure,

and the page you have selected will be waiting for you at the

printer in your home office.

Keep all your video equipment in the one location with the Hills smart

entertainmentsystemandenjoymulti-roomviewingand

controlling of your DVD, pay TV and VCR on any television in your

home. Once you have selected the pre-programmed channel for your

DVDplayer,useyourremotecontroltoactivatethePLAYfunction.

The infrared signal travels via the Hills Home Hub cables, through

the central enclosure, through the Hills modulator, to the DVD player

in your entertainment area. The DVD will then send the movie back

to the TV that you're watching. The Hills smart entertainment system

allows you to control the functions of your VCR, DVD, or pay TV

remotely, in any room where there's a TV.

EnjoysuperiorstereosoundinanyroomofyourhomewiththeHills

Home Music wall or ceiling mounted speakers. A CD player in your

home entertainment area sends music signals via the Hills Home

Hub cables, through the central enclosure to the rooms in which the

speakers are located. Set the volume level independently in each

room using the volume control.

Headend Configurations

The configuration of any headend will vary greatly depending on the individual requirements of the customer and the specification of the installation. The following headend configurations are given as a guide only, the actual headend configuration will be decided by the designer based on the information supplied.

Astro is a high-end headend equipment manufacturer from Germany; Hills Industries is the exclusive agent and distributor for Astro in Australia. The Astro Headend equipment provides effective satellite TV distribution suited to a variety of applications. Astro is the only headend approved by Austar and Foxtel.

Astro QAM

ThemainmodulessoldbyHillsIndustriesfortheAstroheadendsaretheQPSKtoQAMtransmodulators.Thesemodulesconvertdigital satellite signals into digital cable channels for distribution within an 860 MHz distribution network. The digital satellite signals could originate from different satellites in different orbital positions and be received by multiple satellite dishes. These receivedservicescouldincludeSubscription–TVoperatorssuchasFoxtel/AUSTAR,SelecTv,Jadeworld,UBIorMySat.Onceconvertedintodigitalcable(QAM)signalstheycanthenbeinjectedintooldornewMATV/CATVnetworksthatareonlydesignedup to 860MHz.

QAMoperatesatfrequenciesbetween47and862MHZandunlikesatellitesignals(QPSK)thatoperateatfrequenciesupto2GHZQAMdoesnotrequireamplifiersandpassivestobeupgraded.QAMdoesnotrequiremultipletrunksorbackbonesormultiplelateralcablestoberuntothewallplatesothatsettopboxesforFoxtelIQorAUSTARMystarhavefullfunctionality.Thesimpler network topology and the lower cost of passive devices and amplifiers quickly recover the headend cost.

TheAstroheadendutilisingQPSKtoQAMconversionisideallysuitedtoBrownfieldsiteswhereupgradingdistributioncableisnot practicable such as apartments, office towers, sporting venues, shopping centres, hospitals, caravan parks and prisons. The Astro solution is also well suited for Greenfield estates or any other network only capable of passing up to 860MHz. Oneof theAstroequipment’smainsellingpoints is the remotemonitoring facilityandtheirsoftwaremanagement tool.Thismakes the Astro equipment ideal for headends that may be installed in remote locations and which integrators wish to control and maintain remotely. The software allows spare modules in the base unit to be turned on and off or reconfigured as desired. The Astro equipment can send different types of alarms via SNMP or GSM to warn of failures of any type within the headend.

Astro Terrestrial

The Astro equipment also features Free To Air (FTA) modules suchasCOFDM–COFDMandCOFDM–Palconverters.Whilethese modules are a little more expensive from Astro compared to other options, typical installations often have multiple base units with spare slots that could easy accommodate these FTA modules. This then provides a total FTA and Subscription TV solution.

Together with the satellite and FTA modules the complete headend would have now full remote monitoring capability allowing the user to have the ability to monitor, reconfigure and turnmodulesonoroffremotely.Thisisamajorsellingfeatureof the Astro equipment.

Polytron is a respected Headend manufacturer and supplier from Germany. Hills Industries are the agents for Polytron in the Oceanic region. The main strengths for Polytron are the small physical size of the base unit and the range of plug in modules that cater for digital satellite, analogue and digital terrestrial and FM applications. A Polytron headend is the perfect solution when you have the need to amplify, convert, modulate and filter out unwanted channels and then combine the wanted services ready for distribution into a network.

The base unit (SPM1000 digi) is a 10-slot device that can be either wall or rack mounted. At only 5RU high (180mm) the SPM1000 base unit is the most popular base unit sold. It comes standard with power supply, 10dB amplifier and control panel to program anyofpluginmodulesthatcanbeinstalledintheframe.Thebaseunit’ssoftwarecanbeeasilyupgradedbyfittingareplacementEPROM that lies under the front control panel cover. The base unit combines all the RF outputs of each module via a back plane and provides an output on the front panel as well as a test point which is 20dB down from the main output.Where the satellite TV services use an encryption method other than Irdeto it is necessary to use multiple set top boxes to provide the AV signal source to feed to the Polytron modulators.

Polytron Satellite

SatellitemodulesincludeatwinQPSK–AVwithCIcard(SPM-PSTI)withtheabilitytoinsertaconditionalaccessmoduleandsmart card to work with operators such as Optus Aurora and AUSTAR or other services using Irdeto encryption. This card is used to convert two digital FTA satellite signals from one satellite transponder into two baseband signals ready to insert into a twin modulator card. Both types could be used in headend installation to provide a superior solution rather than using a domestic set top box (STB) to receive the desired FTA or encrypted signals.

Polytron Modulators

Polytron is a perfect choice when in-house services need to be reticulated throughout a structured network. These in-house servicescouldbefromanybasebandsourcesuchasVCR’s,DVD’s,PC,CCTV,Settopboxesortextgeneratorswitha1Voltpeak-peakoutput.AllthePolytronmodulatorsintherangeareVSB,whichinturnmeanstherearecapableofadjacentchannels.

For example you can set the outputs on channels 30,31,32,33… Modulators in range start from the twin mono version (SPM-MMTQ)thenthetwinstereoversion(SPM-MSTQ)tothenew4-channelstereoversion.Thisnewmodulator(SPM-MS4)modulecontains 4 x RF modulators on a single card and hence with a fully loaded base unit and ten x SPM-MS4 cards you have 40 x stereo VSB TV channels in a 5RU housing.

Polytron Terrestrial

Given that analogue services in Australia will be shut down over the next few years it is no longer a sensible option to rely on distributing the off air analogue signals. If the system needs analogue signals distributed, for instance to allow viewers to continue using analogue sets, it is prudent to create the analogue signals from the digital off air signals by conversion.

For terrestrial reception Polytron offers twin COFDM –AV (SPM-PTTI) conversion in either single or twin stream versions. These enable the integrator to chose between one or two streams from one terrestrial multiplexer and convert these digital signals into baseband 1-volt video signals. The baseband signals can then be converted to RF via separate modulators for distribution.

The primary use for these modules is to receive digital FTA signals and convert back to analogue either because analogue reception is impaired with ghosting, intermodulation or just to noisy. The other reason is toenable customers to keep their older analogue TV sets in use.
