Hillingdon Community Centres Hillingdon Community Centres are a fundamental part of our local Community. Our Community Centres endeavour to accommodate everyone from toddlers to senior
citizens with facilities for wheelchair users. All Community Centres are managed by a dedicated team who work hard to provide a
valuable service for the local community. The Summer Play Schemes programme is just one of the many important activities that
Community Centres offer children to the local area. They also offer a very wide variety of activities including Keep Fit, Sports, Art classes,
Dance and so much more! Most Community Centres have halls and rooms you can hire for meetings or parties, each
centre varies. Please contact your local Community Centre for details of their activities and
programmes.

Welcome to our world at the HFCA Play Schemes The Hillingdon Federation of Community Association has been organising play
schemes since 1993. The Management team behind the HFCA are John Echlin (Chair) John Thirkettle (Vice
Chair) Janet Nuth (Hon. Secretary) Jackie Westbrook (Minutes & Website Design) Valerie Mohammadi (Play Scheme Co-ordinator)
The play schemes were set up to offer affordable play opportunities to all local children in the long hot summer holidays. Funded by the LB Hillingdon.
We are pleased to say that all schemes are set at an affordable price. Each play scheme is managed by a qualified play manager and qualified play leaders.
All are CRB checked. Many have been in their post for numerous years. You will be introduced to each play scheme manager and team as you read through
this booklet. The play schemes are all about Fun, Excitement, Friendships and the best play
opportunities available! The HFCA summer play schemes cover the whole 6 weeks summer holidays, with
each Community Centre offering different weeks of play. Please read and be immersed in our world of PLAY!

Barnhill Community CentreStar Club
Star Club at Barnhill Community Centre is OFSTED registered and has one of the largest teams out of the Play schemes. We are able to offer many places for our inclusion children. All staff are qualified to level 2/3 in play work and Early years.Star Club have been running since 1993 and it is to say that some of the children who have come to us over the years are now working as qualified play workers!
Over the years Star Club has achieved two awards for inclusion work in Hillingdon. These are just a few pictures which tell their own story of the fun activities that the children enjoyed taking part in last year. Children attend from the ages of 4½ to 12. Each day’s programme is packed with fun, exciting, healthy and stimulating activities!

Barnhill Community CentreStar Club We offer a large array of activities from Arts & Crafts to Football Coaches,
Entertainers, Magic shows, Discos, Bouncy Castles, Snooker/ Pool tables, Table Tennis, Badminton, Wii, Xbox Kinnect, Cinema, Jewellery Making, visits from the Dog Trust, Party People, Police, Fire Brigade, Theatre shows and so much more.........Children enjoy meeting and making new friends and sharing a fun filled two weeks of excitement and physically challenging activities!!Parents say every year: “We wish you could run for the whole 6 weeks!!!”

Hayes End Community CentreAvalon Club
Each day the children took part in a variety of activities including decorating mugs, design a picture frame, design a t-shirt, making and painting their own pencil case, Hamma beads, Wind Catchers, plus so much more. The children had the use of the park and the courts where the boys enjoyed playing football. All the children made full use of the playground attached to the centre. Everyday children had a wide variety of activities to keep them physically and mentally fit and all the children enjoyed learning new skills.The children enjoyed the expertise of a professional football coach as well as all the craft activities they were able to participate in.

Crane Community CentreWe are proud of ourselves at the Crane Play scheme for twelve plus years of experience in Play work with children age from 4 ½ to 11 years old. We can accommodate up to 50 children comfortably.We have a clean and welcoming building with the added bonus of a secure outside fenced and gated area. The outside area has a barked area / grassed area and concrete so we can offer lots of different activities and experiences. Once children are all in the gates are locked and kept locked until it is time to go home.The atmosphere is always friendly and the children feel comfortable to be able
to speak to any member of staff. The staff all have years of experience in school or playgroup areas and are all CRB checked.We have up-to-date policies and parents/carers are always welcome to have a
look at them at any time.

Crane Community Centre

The kitchen area is well fitted and is ideal for the cold cooking we do with children –French bread pizzas / toasties / iced cakes / etc, which the children prepare themselves.
The games and construction are changed on a regular basis, so children do not get bored with the same things. The football / ice hockey / pool table are very popular, along with our Bingo games.
We do not do trips but we do pride ourselves in arts / crafts – where children can design and make their own creations, also be lead by an adult if necessary. These give children experiences they may not normally have.
We purchased some crazy golf items last year and they have proven to be a big success and will be adding to them this year, along with some new experiences in cold cooking.

Brookside at MinetThe theme last year was ‘Pirates & Princesses’. We bought cardboard cut out pirate ships from ‘Boxibity’ in Swansea so that each child could take one home after they had put them together & painted them. We also bought a very large one for them to put together & paint & play in outside. The library had provided lots of pirate & princess books and some with ideas for crafts too.
We made pirate pictures and coloured pirate finger puppets. We also made swords, pirate hats, eye patches and princess crowns. We had fun with face paints at our ‘Princess & Pirate’ party on the last day. We were also entertained with magic & games by a ‘Pirate’ entertainer.

Brookside at Minet
We have an ideal venue for adventure, crafts & exercise, and each day brought a new challenge to us all with the weather & the environment. The bonus is having a ‘swing park’ next to it too so the children enjoyed letting off steam at the end of the morning or afternoon (under supervision).

The QPR trainer came for sports sessions. We were able to go into ‘GOALS’ next door & also went over to the fields for games. We went into the country park for a nature ‘treasure hunt’. Again the glass painting, hama beads, & jewellery making were popular but probably the most popular was the trip to the Beck theatre by bus to see ‘Treasure Island’ and meeting all the cast afterwards & posing for pictures with them.

Bell Farm The holiday week that ran at Bell Farm Christian Centre was themed “Reach for the
Skies”. The children were encouraged to try out lots of new things that normally they would never have tried. The week was very exciting with 54 children attending.
The things the children participated in were a fitness workout, learning new songs (one in sign language), craft making such as musical instruments and acting out the story of Joseph from the bible.
We also had different activities on certain days of the week for instance on the Tuesday we had a great Bollywood Dance Tutor come in where he then spent time teaching this type of dancing to the children. Every child participated as well as the staff and volunteers. The children had a great time.
Another day we hired a climbing wall and the children were able to be harnessed up and then climb this massive wall. We also had a jungle run brought in. The children absolutely loved the wall and many learnt new skills of wall climbing. This was an experience which many will carry into later life.

Bell Farm

On the final day of the club parents were invited to come back to the centre slightly earlier to watch their children perform for them some of the songs they had learnt. The children had also had a lesson on the musical instrument they had made and they performed for the parents using their instrument.
We finally had a presentation ceremony where the children received certificates and medals for all they had achieved throughout the week. This was followed by refreshment for the parents and children and was a great time for all.

Sipson Community CentreWe had a new experience when the Crocodile encounters come to Sipson Community Centre. This is an organisation that brings in reptiles to the centre and talks to the children about them. The children are able to ask questions and are allowed to hold most of the animals. An example of those that were brought in was a Tortoise, Blue Tongued Skink, Snakes, Crocodile, and Bearded Dragon. The children were extremely excited to see all these reptiles up close. Again at Sipson a wonderful time was had by all and we believe these holiday clubs will have left a significant positive impact on the children. We would like to say our thanks and appreciation to HFCA for without the support and financial assistance from HFCA we would not be able to run such clubs.

Charville Community CentreThe theme this year was ‘The Seaside’ and we set up a ‘Seaside Shop’ with buckets, spades, beach clothes to sell & a row of ‘Beach huts’ as a background. The huts came in a kit made of cardboard to paint & slot together to make a hut or open out for a background display.We followed the theme with the sand & water play outside under the gazebo in the park play area & had picnic rugs, plates & cups set up etc. We made a large seaside mural on the wall in the hall & every child coloured a picture of children, sea creatures, buckets & spades etc to go on it.Many of the crafts also were around the idea of the seaside e.g. glass painting sun catchers, making grass skirts & flower garlands, sticker seaside or under water pictures.As usual the Hamma beads & jewellery making were very popular & some new ‘noodle art’(or named ‘squishy sticks’) and decorating cakes & biscuits.

Charville Community Centre

One new activity for us was when the children brought their bicycles to be marked by the police with their post code & they will then be stored on a database so that if they are stolen they can be easily traced. The police also gave the children a road safety talk & some ‘goodies’ to take home.The library reading scheme was again a success with children aiming to win prizes for each book they read. Craig from QPR also helped with sports sessions 3 times in the week, taking groups over to the playing fields.
The week ended with a ‘fun fair’ with a Hoopla game, coconut shy, an unrideable horse, Bouncy castle, Flying Turtles Roller Scooters, test your strength machine with a hammer, ball in a bucket game, candy floss, & a Punch & Judy Show.Children and staff had a lovely time.

Uxbridge Community CentreHappy Days
The Happy Days Play scheme has been running since 1995 at The Uxbridge Community Centre. The scheme runs for the first two weeks of the school summer holidays from 9.30-3.00 daily. We cater for 45/50 children aged 5-11yrs. The aim of the Play scheme is to provide children with a wide variety of activities which they can choose from in a secure, friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Last summer children enjoyed a huge range of activities and workshops and also had the opportunity to go on day trips.
Daily, children were able to choose from art/craft activities and indoor games. Workshops included tennis, football, multi-sports, martial arts, dance and cycling. Days out were spent at The Lookout Discovery Centre Bracknell, Hillingdon Outdoor Activity Centre, Iver Nature Study Centre and Uxbridge pool. A particular favourite science activity last year was a team challenge making rockets and launching them in Fasnidge Park (GREAT FUN!)

We also ran a healthy tuck shop where fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks and drinks were available.What makes the Play scheme such a success each year is the staff team. Most of our staff work in local schools and have a variety of qualifications. The senior staff are all very experienced with young children in various settings. We also have student staff who have an interest in working with children and attend training sessions. The staff meet together and carefully plan time tables, activities, workshops and trips together. Parents have often commented on how caring, friendly and professional the staff team are.

Hello and welcome to the Tiger club!This year will be our 2nd year at Walter Pomeroy Hall Hillingdon .The children and staff had such a fun and exciting time last year.They all enjoyed Arts and Crafts, sewing, cold cooking and much more! The children had a great time with the Sports Coach playing football, cricket, rounder's and learning to dance with our dance coach.The children also enjoyed writing and acting out their own production of “Fashion Town”! Making their own costumes and acting out their characters.

A4KIDS Brunel University Sports Centre Activity4Kids An associated HFCA project for children aged 8 – 14 years Term time throughout the year at Brunel University Sports Centre Fridays 5.00 – 6.00 p.m. - just £1.00 per session (the occasional special activity might cost
more) A4K was established in January 2009 by John Thirkettle (Vice-Chairman HFCA) and John
Williams; the latter having become aware of a need to provide local children with the opportunity to try different activities (we call them “tasters”) at a very low price. Although we target low-income families, all children are welcome.
We endeavour to present a different activity each week but not necessarily, some require more time than others which means we might run the same activity for two consecutive Fridays or have a two hour special.
Activities have included street and break dancing, gymnastics, tennis, table tennis, netball, hockey, free running, cricket, rounder's, rock climbing, kayaking, Tai Kwando, self-defence, fencing, non-contact boxing, archery and multi-sports.
We use qualified instructors with the help of volunteers which include Brunel students and liaise with local clubs so that any child showing particular promise and/or interest can receive additional coaching.

Training events for HFCA clubs
HFCA hold regular training courses to ensure that all staff/volunteers are up to date with current policies and procedures. All staff/volunteers must hold current CRB/DBS certificates.
The pictures above show some of the teams attending an evenings training course on Safe Guarding, Asthma and Epipen. Training continues all year round through the HFCA and funded by the LB Hillingdon.
