Ben Venue Public School…
where great things are always happening!
Welcome to Week 9 Term 3 Monday September 12, 2016
Term 4 dates
As we draw close to the end of the term there are a few dates to put on your calendars. School returns
for staff and students on Monday October 10, 2016. We will have our school photos in November,
Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th. As Kindergarten has already had their photos, it will be for
Years 1 – 6. We also have the fabulous Year 6 performance to look forward to which will take place
early in Term 4. The actual dates and times will be in upcoming newsletters.
A Big Thank You!
Last week a bubbler was installed in the Kindergarten play area. One of our wonderful parents Marty
Inglis donated his time to get this up and running in time for the warmer weather. I am sure it will be
well utilised. Thanks again Marty!
Don’t Forget
4/5/6M have their market stall and lunch day this Friday. There will be plenty of fabulous things to
purchase (perhaps some early Christmas shopping). Come prepared and ready to choose from a great
variety of creative goods. Thank you to Mrs O’Connell who has organised and worked with the students
to get the stalls and goods ready for purchase.
Sporting News
Congratulations to the students who have qualified for the State Athletics Carnival held on October
19-20 at the Olympic Park, Homebush in Sydney. There is a report later in the newsletter.
Reminder—Don’t forget!!!

Girls Touch Football Team
This year the Ben Venue Girls Touch Football team have represented our school with pride. They played their final game in Bundarra on Tuesday in boggy conditions. Bundarra took the lead early in the game and played with finesse. However, the second half saw a real shift in the Ben Venue team and they managed to make up some lost ground and really challenged the opposition, making them very nervous. Both teams scored the same number of tries in the second half, which is a real credit to the determination shown by the Ben Venue team. Unfortunately, Bundarra lead the score line throughout the game and defeated the Ben Venue Girls in the end. Miss Trott and Mrs Pattison were so proud of the effort and the persistence the team showed in the face of adversity. They have been an absolute pleasure to coach. Regional Athletics Carnival On Monday September 5 a large group of Ben Venue students travelled to Tamworth to represent the Armidale District at the Regional Athletics Carnival. These students were Brielle Ball, Lydia Byerlee, Andre Cooper, Layla Cooper, Teleesha Cromie, Riley Dowd, Hugo Fittler, Breleigh Godwin, Malakai Griffiths, Nick Jackson, Dallas Kelly, Jamelia Kelly, Callan Lawrence, Zac Levy, Levi Mace, Toby Nelson, Sophie Parsons, Dougal Payne, Jacob Pearce, Chloe Petrov, Kimmy Porter, Ella Russell, Hayden Schumacher, Liam Sim, Madison Sim and Skye Vaughan. Conditions were cool at the beginning of the day and despite the track still being rather damp some cracking times were set in the track events. By the end of the day we had plenty of sore muscles, a little bit of sunburn and stomachs full of the essential athletes food - snow cones (I'm sure it's in the food pyramid somewhere)!! All students should be extremely proud of making it to this level and for the great sense of fair play and respect demonstrated by all. We are extremely proud of the students who have qualified for the State Carnival at Homebush in Sydney in October. Congratulations to you all! Jeanenne Gale

Around the Classrooms ……...
1F has enjoyed a very busy term 3, the days and weeks seem to have absolutely flown by. Students have been
looking at writing
procedures in class
and decided to make
our dad’s some choc-
chip muffins for
Father’s Day. We
made the muffins in
class with different
students adding the ingredients, before
cooking them down in the staffroom oven.
Last Friday we were
lucky enough to have
a visit from Mrs Moffatt
and Phyllis a poddy
lamb. Phyllis is from
Mr Waters's farm and
was very cute. We all
got to have a little pat,
with everyone
commenting on how soft her wool was. Thanks
Mr Waters for bringing her in!
As the weather is starting to warm up and
students are taking their jumpers off, please
remember to check your child’s clothing is
labelled.

6R has been extremely busy this term, on the
sporting field, in the classroom and on the
stage getting ready for the Year 6 Performance
‘Happily Ever After?’.
This term has seen students compete in the
School, Zone and Regional
Athletics Championships, and
represented the school in a
variety of School Knockout
competitions. Congratulations to
all who have contested these events.
In Science this term the students have been
working on the unit ‘Earthquake Explorers’. It
has given opportunities for students to explore
when and where earthquakes have occurred
and why they happen in certain places more
than others.
In Literacy the class has been looking into the
perspectives and viewpoints of a variety of
myths and legends from countries across the
world. Tales of Pandora, Maud and the
Dragon, Medusa and the legends of Robin
Hood and Ned Kelly have been on our reading
list this term. Students have investigated the
difference between a myth and a legend, and
worked to appreciate diverse cultures and
traditions through these stories. Students also
learned the hard way that ‘word-of-mouth’ is
not the most ideal way to tell a story, as stories
change or misheard over time.

Let kids spend time where they feel confident
If you have a child who often struggles to shine in mainstream activities, here’s your challenge:
1. Help them find a place or activity where they feel confident
2. Help and encourage them to spend as much time involved in that activity as schedules,
interest and budget will allow.
3. Look for ways to transfer that feeling of confidence to other places and activities
