Welcome back to Term 3 Keas:
Hope you enjoyed your term break and are ready for an action packed term of Keas.
Term 2 at Keas:
Last term the Keas went hiking learnt about road safety challenged the other sections
to see how much we could collect to donate to the Salvation Army, made Hairy Har-
ries and planted Broad Beans. Hillcrest Auto Service showed the Keas about auto-
mechanics, we now have budding mechanics in our group. Community walking, took
the Keas on a quiz around the community which ended in hot milo and marshmal-
lows.
National Kea Hike & JOTT:
St Columbas Keas invited us to join them for the National Kea Hike/JOTT at the Mt
Pirongia Mangakara Nature Walk .
Thank you:
We would like to give a big THANK YOU to Hillcrest Auto Services for giving us a
guided tour through their workshop and Oderings Garden Centre for supplying the
grass seeds so we could make our Hairy Harries.
Kea Safety:
This term we have introduced a sign in/out sheet, parents please remember to sign
when dropping off and collecting your Keas.

Cubs is all about fun, enjoy-
ing the outdoors learning a
few new skills and being
part of the local communi-
ty. Wet weather ahs kept
us indoors a bit this term,
but Cubs and Scouts en-
joyed a cold, dark evening
of orienteering around
Hillcrest. The young peo-ple solved puzzles and used
maps to cover a lot of ter-
ritory. Thanks to Mang
(Steve) who organised the
course in spite of a trip to
A&E hours beforehand.
We honored our local
community by making mod
was presented a certificate
from the National and
Zone Cub Leaders to cele-
brate his badge success.
Mosaic postcards to post
to 6 local agencies. The
Cubs wrote delightful mes-
sages of thanks for the ser-
vices they provide. Our
second effort involved plant-
ing trees at Hammond Park
in monsoon-like conditions!
This is the second year
we’ve participated in com-
munity planting, part of the
national Cub Outdoor Ad-
venture Award.
The Kea section joined us
for a night of activities to
celebrate Matariki. Cubs
and Keas spent an evening
learning how Maori used the
celestial star compass
kapehu whetu and compared
it with the standard compass we use for navigation today,
made wharenui photo
frames to celebrate our
whakapapa, made our own
constellations/legends,
brewed kawakawa and ma-
nuka honey tea ina billy,
learned a few whai (string)
games, wrote messages on
rangiora leaves and made
poi.
A hardy group of Cubs at-
tended a winter camp based
at the Cambridge Scout den.
All activities, meals and sleep-
ing were held outdoors! We
explored the local area, played
lots of games, made numerous
observations (for the Out-
door Adventure Award), had
a huge campfire and learned
about the mysterious zombie
drop possums. As part of our
quest to renew our Cub
promise each term, we lined
the steps at Te Koutu Do-
main, and said the Cub prom-

Welcome back to Scouts for Term 3
A big welcome back to our Scouts. We will be having a very busy term as it is only 9
weeks long.
Pio Pio Adventure Camp:
Last term was also busy with our scout activities and a number of scouts took up the chal-
lenge and participated in the PioPio Adventure Camp. The types of activities that took
place were similar to those found in a National Jamboree. 4WD vehicle rides, grass skiing,
abseiling, caving, shooting, archery, ATV and motorbikes rides and orienteering with a
difference. A great time was had by all.
Term 3
Cubs that are going up to Scouts next term will be making visits to our section nights and
our Scouts who are going up to Venturers next term will also be making visits to the Ven-
turers section. Hopefully this will help the Cubs and Scouts settle easier into their new
sections next term.
Bike Camp
We unfortunately had to postpone our Waingaro camp last term due to maintenance
work being carried out on the Waingaro Scout Den. WE have booked again for this term
and it will be challenging with a bike ride from Ngaruawahi to Waingaro. On the Sunday
of this camp weekend we will be doing conservation work and plan to plant native trees
around the Waingaro Den. We hope to see most of the Scouts at this camp.
Our theme for this term is “Doing what is right” which is part of our new Scout Law.
Other activities for this term are:
Sewing, Orienteering at the gardens, Communication and observation, Camp preparation,
Cyber safety, Pioneering with knots, Conservation week, Sandford Camp for PL’s, APL’s
and Senior Scouts.
Also there will be a Pre Jamboree Camp in the next holidays for those Scouts that are
attending the NZ Scouting Jamboree at the end of the year. The dates for the Pre Jambo-
ree Camp is the 30th September to the 2nd October. All Jamboree
Scouts are expected to attend.

The Group Committees purpose is to assist the
Group Leader with the management and administra-
tion of the Group, so that the warranted leaders can
concentrate on the delivery of the term programme.
The committee meetings are held on the second
Tuesday of every month.
If this falls in the School Holidays it will be moved to
the first Tuesday back of Term.
Parents please come along to share your ideas and
help with the various positions within the committee.
Safety Hillcrest Scout Group like to ensure all our youth mem-
bers are safe.
We ask that children are always accompanied by an adult
to and from the Den and are signed in and out.
By accompanying your children to the Den this also pro-
vides you with an opportunity to talk with the Leaders
other Adults and see all the exciting scouting skills your
children are learning.
We would also like to remind you that all youth are to
wear black shorts or pants and covered shoes to each
meeting.
