Devin Higgins staff reporter The North County Cheer Team took the top honors in the Junior Rec Cheer category at the Jr. High/Middle School & Rec. Cheer Championship, Feb. 2 in Covington, WA. The team, com- prised of students entirely from the Battle Ground School Dis- trict, beat out four other teams in the one-day competition. Recreation cheer squads are usually associated with nonprofit organizations like the Boys & Girls Club, Parks Department, or a Pop Warner football program, and come in many forms from cheering for a junior football league to per- formance teams. “It was an amazing event for us because one of the teams we competed with had won for the last three straight years,” said sixth-year coach Jodele Mistretta. “It gives us quite the boost to say we’re the best team in the state.” The team competes in about 8-10 tournaments every year throughout the Northwest and the west coast. Earlier this year, the North County girls went to Las Vegas to participate in the 2013 Jam Nationals and took home a fourth place finish in their division. To prepare for state, where each team gets only one attempt to nail their routine, Mistretta said the girls put in over six months of training and practice. “It’s all about getting down the muscle memory so you know where to be on flips, throws, mounts, and every facet of the routine,” Mistretta said. “It’s a lot of work, but the girls are passionate about it.” The North County Wildcats Cheer Team consists of Kailee Malone, Elli Cart, Gwenyth Mistretta, Samantha Reyes, Malia Renfroe, Janet Herrera, Camila Renderos, Emily Beh- rens, Aleya Williams, Maddi- son Slate, Karly Tilden, Tiera Hays, Alyssa Hammers, Bryn- na Childress, Shelby Riffel and Kayla Dixon. More information about the North County Cheer program can be found at their website, www. northcountywildcats.com/cheer.
