Dear Brothers and Sisters, Members andFriends of The Hill United Presbyterian Church:

We are coming to the Lenten season of 2011beginning with Ash Wednesday on March 9,2011.The word Lent comes from the wordlengthen which speaks about our movingtoward spring, the lengthening of the dayswith the culmination of Holy Week and Easter, the Great Getting-Up Day of our Savior andLord Jesus Christ.

Lent is made up of forty days, excluding theSundays, and corresponds to the forty daysJesus spent in the wilderness preparing Himselffor His public ministry and His proclamation ofthe Kingdom of God and its being at hand. The Lenten season helps us to reflect on ourdiscipleship for our Lord Jesus and the way inwhich you and I proclaim and live the Kingdom of

    God everyday!* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

    KIDS CORNERJESUS WALKS ON WATER

And early in the morning He came walking towards them on the lake. But when the disciples saw Him walking on lake, they were terrified, saying, It is a ghost! And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to theand said, Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.Peter answered him, Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water. He said, Come. So Peter got ouof the boat, started walking on the water, and came towards Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, hbecame frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me! Jesus immediately reached out His hanand caught him, saying to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt? When they got into the boat, the winceased. And those in the boat worshipped Him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God.

FLASHBACK: The following is a taken from Bulletins printed in 1952. by Nancy Slezak

TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR CHURCH GOERSFrom Christian Herald March 1952 Benjamin F. Swartz

Thou shalt recognize that church-going is a fine art which demands the best preparations of which thou art capable.Thou shalt go to church regularly, for the prescription cannot do thee much good nor be effective if taken only once

a year.Thou shalt get in condition for Sunday by refraining from late hours and activities that clash with the will of God

during the week, especially on Saturday night.Thou shalt go to church in a relaxed state of body and mind, for the absence of tension is a primary requisite to

successful worship.Thou shalt remember that worship in church is not a gloomy exercise, therefore go in a spirit of enjoyment, radiant

and happy to enjoy thy religion.Thou shalt sit relaxed in the pew, for the power of God cannot come to thy personality when thou art rigid and full o

tensions.Thou shalt not bring thy problems to church, for six days are sufficient for thee to think upon thy problems, but the

church service giveth thee a supreme opportunity to let the peace of God bring thee insight for thy intellectualprocesses.

Thou shalt not bring ill will to church, for the flow of spiritual power is effectively blocked by harboring a grudgeagainst thy neighbor.

Thou shalt practice the art of spiritual contemplation by the daily use of Scripture reading and prayer so that thou benot stranger to the God whose Presence thou canst enter in the Sanctuary.

Thou shalt go to church expectantly.

THE MARKS OF A GOOD LAYMANBy the Rev. J.E. Wagner

He treats church finances at least as honorably as he treats the phone and milk bills. He devotes his professional, business or mechanical training and talent to the church. He gives at least as much to the church as he does to his lodge, service club or other fraternal organization. He recognizes the value of just occupying a church pew faithfully. He doesnt hesitate to commend his pastor when he thinks he deserves it.He is perfectly frank in criticizing his pastor, speaking the truth in love.He knows why he is a Christian and why he belongs to the church. He sees that if the church is worth belonging to, it is worth asking others to join.He is alert to defend his church against unfair and unjust attack. He treats his pastor as a human being and not as a plaster-of-paris saint! He has time to read the Bible and other devotional literature. He knows that the time he spends in private prayer will enable his soul to catch up with his body.
