campus!

!e relaxing, care-free days of summer are now long gone, and we "nd ourselves back in the real world. Staying up late and waking up later is no longer an option. We have to get back into the routine of high school even though the memories from the summer are still present in our minds. I think I can speak for a lot of people when saying that this was one of the best summers of my life. So in-stead of living in our past memories, let’s make even more this school year. In this edition I worked alongside the Hilight Sta# to provide an inside look into a great summer, and an even better start to the school year. Our sta# fashionista, Ella Waldrop, provides you with fashion advice that will help you dress for your body type. Sam Black gives a break-down of some of the hottest apps on the market today. I bring a little piece of the Dominican Republic to you as I tell about an amazing experience that I was a part of this summer. I hope your 2012-2013 school year will be an ad-venture "lled with many memorable moments. Welcome back, and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Think of the best vacation you have ever taken in your life. You’re probably thinking of a trip to the mountains or a fun family beach trip many years ago. Now think of taking a trip to a beautiful tropical island with some of your best friends and your main goal is to make an eternal impact on people’s lives. This past summer I had the opportunity to travel to the Dominican Republic with a group of people from my church and community to do mission work. For many ȱ ǰȱ ȱ  ȱ ȱ ęȱ ȱ ȱ ȱplane, much less overseas. So, to go into a developing country that was the farthest thing from America was a huge leap of faith.

From the moment we arrived at the Birmingham Airport bright and early at 4 A.M., we knew that we were in for an exhausting but rewarding week. We boarded the plane with a ȱ¢ǰȱȱ ȱ ȱěȱȱthe unknown! After connecting ȱ ǰȱ  ȱ Ě ȱ ȱ ȱDomingo, which was the capital of our home away from homes. Immediately, we were submerged ȱȱ¢ȱěȱ ¢ȱȱlife to which we had to quickly adjust. Spanish-speaking people swirled around our group, many of them staring at the large white mass that had just stepped out of the airport and onto our next adventure. We boarded a mini-bus that would take us to the SCORE International hotel which is where we would be eating the majority of our meals for the week. On our way we got our ęȱȱȱȱǯȱȱAlong the sides of the bumpy streets were various buildings ranging from pharmacies to houses to MLB training facilities! ȱ  ȱ ę¢ȱ ȱ ȱyou cannot put into words. Later that night, we arrived at our house for the week. Actually, it was more like a luxurious vacation home. None of us were expecting to be staying in such a nice home that the coordinating company had recently acquired. That night we hung around the house and ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ Ĵȱ ȱ ȱthe country, a couple of them being not being able to drink the tap water and the random, wide-spread power outages that seemed to happen each night.

Each day that we were there, we hosted a Vacation Bible School in a local church in the

middle-class neighborhood of Villa Espana. Each morning, we would arrive at the church, split up into groups and disperse to ęȱ ȱ ȱ ȱǯȱ ȱ ȱblew me away when we would come across a child wandering the streets, and they would just willingly come with us back to the church without telling anyone where they would be for the next three hours. Once we had our troops, we headed back to the church for a morning of pouring into the lives of the children. I had the privilege of leading Bible story time every day. We would tell about simple stories that many of us had heard our entire lives, but to them they were new, amazing stories of truth and

power. After Bible study, the kids would break up into guy and girl groups. Each group would take turns alternating through the craft station where they would make bracelets and draw pictures and the recreation station where they would split up into teams to compete against each other in relay races. Spending four days Ĵȱ ȱ  ȱ ȱ ȱ  ȱone of the most rewarding parts of my experience while on our trip.

However, our day did not end there! Three out of the four afternoons that we were working, we would split up into groups ȱ ȱ ȱ ęǰȱ ȱ ȱ  ȱan interpreter. We would then ȱěȱȱȱ¢ȱȱ

spread the Gospel to anyone who would listen to us… And that’s the thing. Everyone listened! During the three days, my group did not have a single person who was too busy to hear what we had to say. Many times we were invited into the homes of those people who were eager to learn about Jesus Christ. Probably my favorite moment during the week was one afternoon when we spoke to a man for an hour and a half. He was extremely interested in what we had to say, and he asked many deep, theological questions. Some ȱȱȱȱ ȱȱěȱguard for a second, but God was right there giving us the words to say. Later that night I thought about my quiet time that started my day. In it I remembered reading Galations 4:5-6 which says, “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” As I sat there and thought about that verse and the conversation we had with the man of many questions, I was once again amazed at how sovereign our Lord is. He led us to a man who had many questions and concerns about the cross so that the Holy ȱ ȱ ęȱ ȱ ȱ ȱgive us the words to say. It was such a comforting thought!

While our main goal for the trip was to help others understand what Christ did for us on the cross many thousands of years ago, we as a group learned several major lessons that week. The Dominican people taught us what it means to be loving, inviting people. They gave us ȱȱ ȱ ȱȱĴȱȱwe needed to talk to them, and they were all so thankful for our willingness to share our hearts with them. I know we decided as a group to come home and ȱȱěȱȱȱȱȱtowards those who are not always as easy to love. So I challenge you to do the same. Show some love this school year and make it a goal to make someone’s day each and every day!

The Olympic Games come around once every four years and is a time when people from all around the world turn on their televisions and tune in to see what their country is doing. Athletes train their entire lives with one goal in mind—winning an Olympic gold medal. It is safe to say that Gabby

Douglas is now one of the favorite Olympians o f Americans. Gabby won

gold in Women’s Team Final and also the most prized possession in women’s gymnastics, the Olympic all around gold medal. Gabby is the third consecutive ȱ ȱ ȱ ęȱ Ȭȱ ȱ ȱȱ ȱ ȱȬaround competition. Perhaps what set Gabby apart most from the sea of medalists is that she pointed up and gave all her glory to God. “The glory goes up to Him, and the blessings fall down

on me,” she told a reporter on the ȱ Ěǯȱ ǰȱ ȱ  ȱher bubbly personality and a near ȱȱȱȱęȱȱis why Gabby is hard not to love. Michael Phelps is said to be the most decorated Olympic of all time. After competing as an Olympic swimmer for four Olympics he walked away from London as an 18 time gold medalist of his 22 medals overall. President Obama even acknowledged Phelps for making such history. “Congrats to Michael ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȬȱOlympic medal record. You’ve made your country proud.” After winning his last individual race, ȱ ŗŖŖȱ ȱ ĴĚ¢ǰȱ ȱsaid that he is mainly excited about what the next Olympians are going to do and how they are going to change the sport.

Of course, all Americans have to be proud of our country as we have pride in receiving such success in achieving 104 medals. But taking a look at Gabby Douglas’ deeply grateful heart and how she managed the pressures of competing, we see how she overcame the obstacles  ȱȱĴȱȱpersistence. Each Cullman High ȱ ȱ ȱ ęȱ ȱthe example Gabby has shown by competing in the Olympics and achieving worldwide success. Michael Phelps individual success was not an easy one. Michael had a learning disability and ADHD that made ȱ ¡¢ȱĜȱ ȱ ȱ ȱanything. Success to Michael meant hard work, being willing to meet challenges with strength, courage, and determination. His

Olympic success not only came from within but also it came from having teachers and coaches that would go beyond regular routines ȱ ęȱ  ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱMichael. Using Michael Phelps as an example, we students can gain momentum to face the impossible and know that success ȱȱȱȱĜȱȱǯȱȱȱȱȱȱęȱȱindividual interest and dedicate ourselves to being the best we can be. For teachers, Michael Phelps is an example of how important

it is when a student who Ȃȱ ęȱ ȱsame category as most other people and how you have to make a ěȱ ¢ȱseeking new

ways to teach and encourage students, you never know when one of your students may someday change the world.

Starting Things off RightA freshman how-toLexi Oliver, Junior Editor

Sadi Hulgan, Staff Writer

Your high school years are considered by most people to be the best years of your young life. The key to success in high school is a great start to freshman year. This can be an overwhelming time as the transition from middle schooler to “big kid” sets in. From homecoming to new clubs to what to wear and where to sit, it can be a great deal to take in all at once.

The most important thing to think about beginning fresh-man year is your grades. GPA and class rank are two huge factors in college acceptance and scholar-ships. It is never too early to be-gin planning for college, and you don’t want to realize too late that your GPA and rank aren’t where you would like for them to be. Involvement in sports,

Advice from Administration and Guidance:The only full mirror is the girls’ bathroom in B building.

If you have lunch begins on one of the sec-ond bells and you need to warm up your food, RUSH to the microwave or you may never get to experience warm lunch.

Always bring a light jacket if you get cold easily. Some teachers’ classrooms are remi-niscent of igloos.

Don’t readily show that you possess gum, it could make your break your school year. You don’t want to be labeled as the person who always has gum.

Everything else you need to know:

Playing a sport, being in band, or joining a club can be a great way to meet new people and build up your ever important resume for col-lege. This summer while most of us were sleeping in, relaxing, and hanging out with friends and family, the CHS cross country team was working tirelessly and training diligently in hopes of having a successful season this fall.ȱ ¢ȱȱěȱȱȱwith an annual cross country camp hosted by St. Bernard. They ran between four and ten miles per day on the gruesome and very challenging trails at St. Bernard three days a week at 7 a.m. When asking varsity runner Savannah Smith how

she felt about the Bernard trails, she replied, “It helps to get us in shape for the upcoming season so we’re not starting at square ȱ  ȱ ȱ ȱ Ĝ¢ȱstarts. Running the trails there ȱȱĴȱȱȱȱȱmeets because of the hilly terrain. Also, we had some great coaches and mentors that taught us some good race strategies and helped us with our technique.” This camp was open to all runners in Cullman County. Practicing with talented competitors from other schools helped to set the stage

for competition in the future. But the cross country team didn’t stop at just running on the Bernard trails. Assistant Coach, Mason Dye, and Coach, Billy Barnet, also took the varsity runners to the Shady Grove

Dude Ranch running camp- which (FYI) is the only ski resort in Alabama- where they stayed for three days and ran a total of 28 miles! The cross country team really knows how to “rough it.” They slept in rustic cabins and nine girls shared a bathroom with only one shower stall! Yes, you read correctly, one shower stall; the water was also freezing cold! And, the boys’ cabin lacked the luxury of air conditioning. The phrase “you don’t know whatcha got till it’s gone” really rang true! But it was a great experience over all and a wonderful opportunity to bond with the team. When asking varsity runner Marisa Franklin what her favorite part of the Shady Grove Dude Ranch camp was she replied, “My favorite part was sleeping in the hammocks the guys put up

after our 10 mile run, and then Ĵȱ ȱ  ȱ ȱ ȱȱ ȱĴȱȱȱȱup.” It was a great experience and helped to strengthen the team both physically and mentally. Since school started, the cross country practice schedule has changed. Speed work welcomes them at 5:30 a.m. in the morning on Mondays and Wednesdays, and on Friday they get to sleep in because practice starts at 6 a.m. In addition to the taxing morning work outs, the team runs every afternoon as well. On average, the team runs about 30 miles a week. Visions of state rings will continue to push the runners  ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ęȱfatigue, run through the hard times, and push them to greatness.

Workin’ It OutMarine Football TrainingSarah Robinson, Staff Writer

When you hear the word “Marine” several images are typically likely to pop into your head. You mind probably instantly goes to the vision of a very strong, very tough, and an almost brick wall type of man. Well, as you may have heard our football team underwent a marine styled training program over the summer, which was intended to make them stronger as players and team as a whole. When I heard about the workout sessions I was not only immediately impressed but also immediately curious. I was wondering, for example, what did they actually do in these grueling routines?….Well I asked Coach Johnson and got the inside story behind them!

Q. What exactly did these workouts involve?

A.The marines divided the team into groups, and each group was assigned a marine to instruct them in a series of circuit type calisthenics workouts. The marines also did team building exercises and talked to our guys about what it means to work hard, be a good teammate, and ¢ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ Ěȱon the people around them.

Q. How often did the team do the workout? What time did they start each morning?

A.These workouts were for the ęȱ  ȱ ¢ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱtraining program. The two sessions lasted from about six until nine each morning.

Q. Do you think the workouts Ĵȱ ȱ ȱ ¢Ȃȱteam?

A.I think that the workouts were great for our team physically, and more importantly they made our guys get focused mentally. Football is all about being mentally tough, and these marine are the epitome of mental toughness.

Q.What is your outlook for this ȱǵ

A. I have a very positive outlook for this upcoming season. I would have to say that ȱ ȱ¢ěȱ ȱ ¢ȱa goal, but as for right now we are focused on Walker week one. I believe that it is important for us to focus on one week at a time. If each player will concentrate on the details and trying to improve each week, then our team will continue to improve and this could be another successful ǯȱȱȱȱȱȱěȱjust have to get these guys to buy into the mindset that this is a process. If the team will commit to that mindset, then we should continue to progress throughout the season.

Mason Jones told me what he had to say about the workouts also, “I thought the marine work-outs were very tough and chal-lenging, I feel that all players are now respectable young men.”

Wow! That is all so impressive to hear! I think we can all agree the boys had it out this summer, but they all stepped up and met the challenge head on and that will ȱȱȱěȱȱǯȱKnowing what all they went through to get closer and gain focus deserves massive respect from all of us, they are already winners for going through the workouts. Everyone on campus is so excited to see what this season has in store for us, and after that I think we can all agree that it looks like it is going to be another great year to be a Cullman Bearcat!
