Nigel Tutt is a freelance journalist and the promot-

er of Hotel Galatas, a 10-room quality hotel in the

village of Dryopida, on the Greek island of Kythnos.

Tutt started his journalistic career in London be-

fore spending 15 years in Brussels writing about

economic, financial and business issues in the EU

and Belgium. He then moved to Milan to cover

Italian politics, companies and financial markets,

including for the Reuters news agency. His inter-

est for hiking grew in Milan, from where he made

regular trips to the Alps. Greece has been a pas-

sion of Tutt’s for more than 20 years. He has been

coming to Kythnos for at least 10 years.

Η Κατερίνα Φίλιππα γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε

στην Κύθνο, και ασχολείται με την πεζοπορία από

μικρή ηλικία. Σπούδασε Τοπογράφος Μηχανικός

στην Αθήνα. Συνεργάζεται με μελετητικά γραφεία

και έχει συμμετάσχει σε τοπογραφικές, συγκοινω-

νιακές, κυκλοφοριακές, σιδηροδρομικές μελέτες,

σε έργα στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό, όπως επί-

σης και σε μελέτες του Κτηματολογίου. Την περίο-

δο 2012-2013, με την υποστήριξη του Δήμου Κύ-

θνου, εκπόνησε τη μελέτη με τίτλο «Χαρτογράφηση

περιηγητικών διαδρομών Νήσου Κύθνου».

Katerina Filippa, Surveyor Eng. As a freelancer,

she works mainly on site plans. She has partici-

pated in study teams for transport (road, marine,

railway) projects in Greece and abroad and on land

registry projects. In 2012-2013, she carried out the

project titled Cartography of Kythnos Hiking Trails

for the Municipality of Kythnos.

D espite being near to Athens – two hours from the port of Lavrio, three from Piraeus – Kythnos remains unknown and undeveloped for mass tourism, unlike others in

the Cycladic group of islands in the Aegean. It retains its traditional character of white-washed villages with narrow streets, wild countryside with spring and summer flow-ers. Many of our walking trails pass churches and arrive at one of the numerous sandy beaches on the island.

The island’s history is one of the oldest in the Cyclades going back 9000 years. It was an economic and political centre in ancient times. Since then, the Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans and Germans have all had an influence on the island. The hikes show these historical roots.

Greek company Fermina operates Hiking Holidays on Kythnos and in 2016 plans to open Hotel Galatas, a 10-room, quality hotel in Dryopida village. The hotel will be the renovation of two adjacent mansion houses, which are being listed for their historical value by the Greek Culture Ministry.

The hotel will retain the historical design and interior of the buildings, such as a Cycladic-style pigeon house, decorative interiors, courtyard, balcony/terrace, and cellar rooms. The hotel intends to showcase the history of the island, the village and the buildings.

Currently, Fermina is using the Hotel Messaria (www.messaria.gr) for walker ac-commodation, subject to availability. This is a recently-built, quality hotel in the Hora, the island capital.

Our team of hiking guides is led by Katerina Filippa, one of the co-authors of the Kythnos Hiking Guide (published by Terrain Editions). She was born and brought up on the island and knows its history. She holds a First Aid certificate like our other guides.

Some of the trails go along rough mule tracks and are not suitable for very young children. However, Kythnos does not go much above 300 metres in height and the walks are not too demanding.
