Lenoir Preserve: Dudley Street, Yonkers 968-5851. 35+ acres overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades. In the fall, expect to see hawks circling overhead from the Lenoir Hawk Watch. The preserve has a large bird feeding station and is home to Black- birds, Blue Jays, the American Robin and Red-breasted Nuthatches, to name a few. Explore miles of trails on this splendid property located near Route 9 and the Taconic State Parkway. The trails are carriage/bridal trails that allow horseback riding. Cranberry Lake Preserve: Old Orchard St., North White Plains 428-1005. A 165-acre preserve of unspoiled forest and

Croton Point Nature Center: Croton Point Park, Croton-on-Hudson 862-5297. A 504-acre park and nature center containing exhibits about the Hudson River, local history, and flora and fauna. The center is also home to the Material Archives and Laboratory for Archaeology (MALFA) and feature exhibits on the archaeo-logical features of the park.

Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary: Exit 19 off I-95 – adjacent to Playland Amusement Park, Rye 967-8720. Many rare birds, including Snow Bunting, Snowy Owl, Barrows Goldeneye and Red-necked Grebe have been seen here on Playland Lake and the Long Island Sound. Lenoir Preserve: Dudley Street, Yonkers 968-5851. 35+ acres overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades. In the fall, expect to see hawks circling overhead from the Lenoir Hawk Watch. The preserve has a large bird feeding station and is home to Black-birds, Blue Jays, the American Robin and Red-breasted Nuthatches, to name a few. The Nature Center has a bird observa-

tion window for easy viewing. Trails open daily from dawn to dusk. Center open 9-4 on Wed. – Sat. September – June and Mon. – Fri. July – August.

Marshlands Conservancy: Boston Post Rd., Rye 835-4466. The best place to see rare birds. There is a species checklist available in the Visitor’s Center. Open year-round Wed. – Sun., 9-5. Trails open daily from dawn to dusk. Free admission.

Rockefeller State Park Preserve/Pocantico Hills: Route 117, Tarrytown 631-1470. www.friendsrock.org. Explore miles of trails on this splendid property located near Route 9 and the Taconic State Parkway. The trails are carriage/bridal trails that allow horseback riding. Wetlands, woodlands, meadows, fields and

North-SouthCountyTrailwayBegin this enjoyable trail in Eastview in the Town of Greenburgh and head north to Baldwin Place in Somers. This paved, multi-use trail spans 22.1 miles in Westchester County. At Baldwin Place, it becomes the Putnam Trailway, continuing seven miles to Carmel. The North County Trailway is situated on what was part of the former Putnam Division of the New York Central Railroad. The "Old Put," as it was fondly referred to by commuters, provided freight and passenger service from 1881 to 1958 between the Bronx and Putnam County. See map for points of access along this trail.

Or delight in panoramic views, complete with a birds-eye view of the Hudson River, from the perch of the 560-foot high Spitzenberg Mountain at the Blue Mountain Reservation in Peekskill. In the mood for a more leisurely stroll? Then amble along the unpaved pathways of the 12-mile linear park, built on lands that were originally intended to become a parkway. It winds through woods and wetlands that are home to an abundance of wildlife, and through neighborhoods touched by the lives of Thomas Paine, Anne Hutchinson, James Fenimore Cooper and other great figures of American history. Old CrotonAqueduct State Historic TrailEscape the 21st century and bring your family on a historic journey through Westchester County! For more than 150 years, the trail atop the Old Croton Aqueduct has linked communities along the lower Hudson River. This tree-lined 26.2 mile portion of the 41-mile trailway, popular with runners and walkers, offers glimpses of historic and architectural treasures along the way. The 22 miles between Quaker Bridge Road in Cortlandt and Lamartine Avenue in Yonkers have been designated as part of the Hudson River Valley Greenway Trail. Croton Point Park, Croton Point Ave., Croton-on-Hudson. 862-5290. This 508-acre park is situated on a peninsula on the east shore of the Hudson River. Year-round events and activi-ties with facilities for camping, hiking and swimming. The park, rich in natural and human history is also the site of historic wine cellars that are thought to be the oldest in New York and the Croton Point Nature Center that offers a year-round schedule of interpretive programs.

Former home of New York's prominent Van Cortlandt family, now a historic site furnished with period artifacts. Grounds include tenant farmer's house, tavern and gardens. Westchester Riverwalk: The Westchester RiverWalk will be a multi-faceted pathway paralleling Westchester County’s entire Hudson River shoreline from Yonkers to Peekskill. Its 51.5-mile route is currently under development and utilizes a variety of public, semi-public, and private lands, as well as local roads and sections of existing trails, such as the Old Croton Aqueduct, to maximize access to and along the County's Hudson River waterfront. Over 32 miles of River-Walk's route is publically accessible, utilizing newly constructed sections as well as existing sidewalks, paths and trails, such as the Old Croton Aqueduct, and paths within existing parks and facilities.
