Principal’s Message
Welcome to 2020 and to the new
school year to all members of the
SGHS community. A particular
acknowledgment of our new students,
the Class of 2025, who have
commenced their secondary school
journey in Year 7. The youngest
students of the school have
commenced their time at Sydney Girls
in a very impressive fashion, working
cooperatively with their new friends
and colleagues, as well as responding
to the helpful guidance of their Year
10 Peer Support Leaders, classroom
teachers and their Year Advisor Ms
Chau. We are also delighted to meet
the small number of new students
who have accepted an offer into
vacancies in the junior years, as well
as the cohort of Year 11 students who
gain entry each year into the senior
school. Given the fact that a change to
a new school is always accompanied
by some challenge, I would like to
encourage all students enrolling for
the first time this year to be confident
in asking for assistance or clarification
of any process or issue that is causing
a problem or providing any concern.
All staff and students are here to help
and the culture of the school is one of
friendship and caring for others. This
tenet was emphasised in the
inaugural speech to the school by our
current School Captain Amy Wade.
Additionally we are very pleased to
welcome new teaching staff to the
school. After the retirement of long
term teachers Mr Kalina from the
Maths faculty and Ms Joannou from
Technologies, as well as HSIE
teachers Mr Lunney and Mr Sinclair
moving to Head Teacher roles in other
schools, we welcome new teachers to
these vacancies. Mr Harrison Jones
commences his teaching career with
us in Mathematics, Ms Natalie Leung
likewise in HSIE. Mr Nicholas
Fernandez has joined us as a senior
Legal Studies teacher after a very
successful career at Cherrybrook
Technology High, and Ms Olivia Saul is
working as a temporary teacher in
Technologies following her impressive
internship in 2019. We wish them all
well in their time at Sydney Girls High
and thank them for their
contributions.
We return from the summer vacation
with a nation subdued by the events
of the unprecedented bushfire season
and the shock of the impact on
people, property, wildlife and the land.
Students across the school are
attuned to, and part of, the mounting
concerns of citizens who seek greater
action to protect the environment.
They are also well read across the
body of research from climate
scientists who globally have presented
a united response to world leaders
about the evidence. It is anticipated
that in 2020 the issues relating to
protection of the environment will
become even more prevalent in the
minds of students and the discussion
of significant issues will intensify. As
our young people are the future
leaders and agents for change we
look forward to supporting articulate
communication which is evidence-
based and aimed at remediating
some of the sensational media and
misinformation on these important
issues.
Unfortunately the 2019/20 holiday
season and return to school has been
negatively affected by the outbreak of
another global health disease, Novel
Coronavirus. Thanks are due to all
families who have contacted the
school with information about student
travel throughout January. The
situation was made complex by the
very late directive from the NSW
Department of Education asking for
cooperation from families where
students had been in mainland China
or in transit through there.
While the time away from school has
been unsettling for those students
affected, Year Advisors will stay in
touch and classroom teachers will
accommodate students who have
missed work through online
communication and the connection of
class buddies. Any auditions or try
outs for teams will also be
accommodated on return to school.
Thank you to all members of the
school community for the generally
calm and sensitive approach to the
issues relating to this health outbreak,
which has the potential to isolate
students, physically and emotionally, a
phenomenon which we are working
hard to avoid.
Best wishes

Welcome to all returning and new
students, staff, parents and old girls.
2020 will be an exciting year with the
continued building of the Governors
Centre echoing the work of a century
ago when the ‘new’ school began
construction on this site in readiness
for the move from the Elizabeth street
premises in 1921.
The school building has had upgrades
and repairs over the holidays involving
some further painting and carpeting.
The Cleveland Street Quad and
surrounding carpark and pathways
have also been resurfaced to improve
safety for foot traffic. There has also
been a renumbering of rooms to
correct anomalies that have occurred
over the past 100 years. From 2020
onwards all rooms that are learning
spaces will be identified by a three-
digit number. The basement level
numbers start with 0. Those on the
ground floor start with 1, the next floor
up start with 2 and the highest level
rooms start with 3. For example, the
Library is 201, moving
clockwise the adjacent
classroom is 202, etc.
To improve safety, all rooms
now have new improved
evacuation maps clearly
indicating the appropriate
path to follow in the case of
an emergency. There are a
couple of other safety issues
that are also worth reflecting
on. In the December 2019
issue of HiHo, Mr Denyer
described the program of
transition to light rail services
that will occur throughout
this term. Essentially the new
Year 7 will continue using the
610 bus service to and from
Central Station for the
duration of the term while
students in other Years will
have the option of using
buses or the new light rail
system. The important thing
for all students to remember
is that they need to be aware of the
movement of the light rail carriages in
and around both Central Station and
associated tracks.
The availability and use of Public
Transport have always been an
important factor in the life of Sydney
Girls High. Students develop a
confidence and resilience in
negotiating their travel to and from
school which leads to greater
independence and sense of
responsibility. Many students who live
nearby also travel to and from school
by walking or by bicycle.
There may always be some days on
which parents need to drop off or pick
up at the school. It is extremely
important that in these rare cases,
vehicles enter via the school grounds
via Gate 5 (Cleveland Street, leaving
by Gate 6) or Gate 8 (Anzac Parade,
leaving by Gate 7). Please do not drive
into the rear carpark as there are
always students walking through that
area between the basketball courts
and the main building. Cars should
stay on the outside driveways moving
closer to the exit gate before dropping
off their passengers. Even these
driveways are shared traffic for both
pedestrians and vehicles so a
restricted speed limit is in place.

Congratulations to our Year 9 medal
winners who received their award at
the end-of-year Merit Assembly. The
medal is awarded for continuous
participation in the Challenge from
Year 3 to Year 9 inclusive. Some of
the medal winners are pictured below:
Claire and Olivia have participated
every year from kindy. Claire enjoys
reading, and is greatly encouraged by
her mother, who stresses the
importance of reading. She likes
fantasy, dislikes romance, and
particularly enjoys dystopian fiction
which she finds realistic, as it
highlights certain aspects in society.
Some favourite examples are “1984”
and “Grimsdon”. She also enjoys
Agatha Christie, especially “Then there
were none”, which is realistic and has
an unexpected ending.
As Junya enjoys reading, entering the
Challenge was a good way to keep
reading. She particularly likes short
stories, which she reads between
doing homework. This provides a
useful break. The only problem is if a
story is extremely interesting and she
wants to keep reading. In primary she
used to read a lot of fantasy, and still
likes rereading past favourites, e.g.
from the Harry Potter series, as it
reminds her of when she and her
friends used to share their favourite
stories. She now prefers crime fiction.
Olivia enjoys romance and fantasy,
and recommends the fantasy novel
“Throne of Glass”. She reads a lot on
her Kindle as it saves carrying books
around. She also likes the school’s
eBooks which she downloads onto her
device from the eBooks icon on the
school intranet. She would like to
write a book one day, but so far has
not progressed beyond the first
chapter. Fantasy interests her in
particular, as an entirely new world is
created.

Languages
A most impressive end to 2019 for
the Languages Faculty with 3 first
places in the HSC: Yitong (Candy)
Huang 1st place in French Continuers;
Catherine Nguyen 1st place in Latin
Extension; and Anna-Sophia Zahar 1st
place in Chinese Extension. Anna-
Sophia studied Chinese at NSW
School of Languages in her final two
years, however, we must not forget
the foundation she built from Years 7
to 10 with Ms Zhou! Placings were
also awarded for Harris Ledvinka
(2nd) in French Extension; Qiyu
(Annie) Xue (3rd) and Wanying (Cindy)
Meng (4th) in Chinese in Context; and
Catherine Nguyen (2nd) in Latin
Continuers. Remarkable
achievements for all these talented
students. The rest of our HSC
Languages students achieved an
average of 77% Band 6s across the 7
courses which is a wonderful outcome
for their hard work and tenacity. As I
say each year, these results would not
be possible without the superb
teaching of all our Languages staff,
junior and senior, who inspire our
students to reach their personal
bests. Heartfelt thanks to each and
every one.
This year is our biannual Language
Festival! The whole school community
is very much looking forward to this
event. All Languages students will be
involved and sometimes other
students like to organise food stalls
from their country of origin. Students
are reminded to check their emails
regularly to know when to attend
meetings concerning this. Harmony
Day Assembly will be taking place the
day after where prizes will be awarded
for best national dress from the
Languages Festival. I look forward to
seeing the characteristic enthusiasm
and energy this day holds for our
multicultural school.
French
At the end of last year three of our
talented Year 10 students won their
age category for the Alliance
Française Song Competition, however,
on Friday 6 December at the Awards
Ceremony they received overall
winners with Si t’étais là! Mrs
Kritharides, Mrs Fiene and Mrs Wang
joined me in celebrating their
daughters’ impressive achievement.
Organisation is underway for the
France Tour 2020 taking place in the
October holidays. Following a very
successful information evening in
Week 9 we had sufficient numbers for
the Tour to take place within a record
two days! 30 members along with Mr
Treacher, Ms Tilker and I are hard at
work preparing the necessary
documents. Tour members and their
parents/ guardians have paperwork
due to the Languages faculty by the
end of week 1 2020.

Japanese
The Year 7, 8 and 9 students of
Japanese entered the annual
Australia-Japan Relations Essay
Contest in August. This is an essay
contest that is open to all secondary
students held by the Embassy of
Japan every year. The aim of this
essay contest is to encourage and
develop a better understanding of
Japan, and Australia-Japan relations,
amongst secondary school students in
NSW and NT. In the senior division,
students were asked to respond to
the question:
With the advent of the new Japanese
Imperial era of "Reiwa" (令和), how do
you expect Japan-Australia relations to
continue to develop, given the
significant developments and
milestones that occurred during the
preceding "Heisei" (平成) era?
Congratulations to Lara Grosser in
Year 9 on receiving a highly
commended award. She attended the
award ceremony hosted at the Consul-
General’s Official Residence on the
4th of December.
Shoko Kuroki
Languages Teacher
On Thursday, 5 December, 50 SGHS
Year 8 Japanese students piled
together on one bus, curiously
awaiting the experience that the
Japan Foundation had in store for
them. The group learned about
Japanese culture. We were given a
unique experience to learn how to
wear a Yukata, a casual summer
kimono that consisted of a long robe,
a thin strip of cloth to secure the
garment (koshihimo こしひも), and a
sash (obi おび).
Once we had successfully put on our
Yukatas and took a variety of photos,
we sat back down at our work stations
to learn how to wrap items using
furoshiki (ふろしき) (a square of
Japanese fabric). Akahane sensei
taught us how to use the furoshiki
fabric to make a water bottle carrier, a
bag and wraps for presents. We also
learnt some new vocabulary and now
know how to talk about different
7
Languages
shapes.
We would like to express our many
thanks to Ms Kuroki and Ms Xu for
putting in the time and effort that
ultimately made this day as enjoyable
as it was.
Marissa Chu and Shekinah Lowe
Year 8
Latin
At the end of 2019, a busy and
exciting year for our Latin students,
we played a variety of games to
develop flexible thinking and
collaboration, and to review the broad
spectrum of knowledge and skills we
developed in the year. We also viewed
some films to compare ancient forms
of entertainment to modern ones and
to consider how and why the
representation of characters and the
stories themselves change over time.
The Class of 2023 are also looking
forward to viewing I Clodia, the
performance for the 2002 CLTANSW
Drama Festival. This is particularly
relevant to them as they will be senior
students when the next Festival
comes around in 2022, and be able to
audition for roles in Alcestis, a tale
about a mythical queen of Thessaly,
and paragon of ancient feminine
virtue.
Looking to 2020, the international
exams for Latin students take place
very early in our academic year;
registration payments are due at the
office now. As students read for the
upcoming International Mythology
Exam the many adventures of the
Greek hero Perseus and the wretched
wanderings of the Trojan hero and
refugee Aeneas, they can reflect on
how blessed they were to enjoy the
certainty of a lengthy summer holiday,
and engage in their own enjoyable
escapades. A troupe of our students
across years 9 to 12 are also eager to
tell us of their experiences at the Latin
Summer School at the University of
Sydney.
As we welcome two new classes of
Latin students in Year 7, we can
consider the impressive example set
by the just graduated Class of 2019,
as reflected on the labores that
allowed them not only to conquer the
authentic texts that they studied, but
also to challenge their expectations of
what they thought possible when they
too had just embarked on their
journey of Latin learning as Year 7
students.

Youth Shakespeare Carnival – Sport for Jove supported
The Youth Shakespeare Festival
provides a unique hands-on approach
to getting to know Shakespeare’s
works. This Festival is driven by the
young participants themselves as they
explore Shakespeare’s work though
performance, music composition,
movement & dance, and design. It
celebrates their response and
interpretation of the plays, creating
ownership of Shakespeare’s words
and themes. As a result, students find
that being part of the Youth
Shakespeare Carnival has added to
their understanding and appreciation
of Shakespeare, Drama, English,
Design and the Performing & Visual
Arts in the classroom.
Shakespeare is best understood
through active engagement rather
than only reading or watching.
At SGHS we host an in-school guest
adjudicated Carnival celebrating
Shakespeare in performance.
Students receive school based
performance recognition for their
participation. Then we can join a
celebrated Regional Carnival
organised by Sport for Jove Theatre
Company.
This event is so very popular here we
have 2 dates for your calendars, the
first a preliminary preparation for
juniors in school time on Tuesday
31st March. The final evening event is
Wednesday 8th April from 6.30pm in
Campbell Hall.
Early registration for the Shakespeare
in-school festival will mean ongoing
support is more readily available.
There might even be senior mentors
available for directing juniors in their
festival entry. Lunchtime meeting
early in the term to join up.

Welcome back to the 2019/2020
rowing season. Sydney Girls and
Sydney Boys High Schools will host
the Combined High Schools, (CHS),
regatta, at SIRC, at Penrith, on Friday
21st February. This is an important
and fun regatta on the rowing
calendar. Sydney Girls usually does
very well, so we encourage you to
watch your daughter row and also stay
and help behind the scenes if possible
to find the time.
SGHS will also host our own rowing
regatta, at Iron Cove, on Saturday
15th February. Thank you to the many
parents who have volunteered to help
on the day. At the SGHS regatta we
will sell refreshments to the families,
friends and students of our school
and participating schools. Usually, all
the money raised goes to SGHS
rowing programme. However, this year
we have decided to donate the profits
from our spring roll stall to the Euro
Coast Little Athletics Club, based in
Broulee, near Mogo, on the NSW
South Coast. Bushfires damaged the
building where the Club kept its
equipment. Many children in the area
have also lost their homes, together
with their Little Athletics uniforms and
shoes.
Former Captain of Boats, Sara
MacDonald, who finished school last
year and is now one of the SGHS
rowing coaches, has been helping
fight bushfires, on the South Coast,
over summer, in her capacity as a
member of the Rural Fire Service. She
believes Mogo is one of the towns
worst hit by the fires.
Head SGHS rowing coach, Tim
Hughes, has also been involved in the
bushfire recovery. He is a member of
the Army Reserve which has been
deployed to the South Coast to help
those communities. Due to these
commitments, Tim was not able to be
at the first rowing regatta for
the year, the Roseville Regatta
and he will be away for a
number of weeks. Matteo
Villani will replace Tim during
his absence. SGHS performed
well at the Roseville regatta,
at Iron Cove, on Saturday 1st
February. Here are the results:
First: Maya Grosser, Mia
Vinciguerra, Josephine Perry,
Zoe Krakowszky, Zara
Greenwood.
Second: Charlotte Steel,
Sydney Wang, Bianca
Tzioumis, Samara Kleiman,
Jacquie Ryan, Josie Richards,
Nancy Su, Abby Swan, Sarah
Blaney, Cassandra Szmajda,
Lorien Wong, Zara

Mia Vinciguerra, Josephine

Third: Mina Mishima Ha, Akhila

Saturday Netball is a popular sport at
Sydney Girls High School. In 2019, we
had 20 teams (about 180 girls)
playing each week, with girls from all
years participating.
With so many teams, we are able to
cater for players with a range of
abilities and experience. So whether
you are an experienced player or have
never played before, think about
joining up and playing netball in a
school team. It’s a great way to meet
new friends and to participate in the
school’s extra curricular life.
We play in the Northern Suburbs
Netball Association (NSNA)
Competition on Saturdays at Bi
Centennial Reserve, Small St,
Willoughby (adjacent to Willoughby
Leisure Centre and the swimming
pool) easily accessible via the Eastern
Distributor and Warringah Expressway
and by public transport. Junior girls
(12-15 year olds) play in the morning -
seniors in the afternoon.
Coaching/training. Senior teams are
allocated a professional coach and all
other teams are allocated a student
coach from a more senior year who
hold additional training sessions at a
mutually acceptable time (either
before or after school, or at lunch
time) and mentor the girls.
The school netball uniform (netball
dress) is available from the School
Uniform Shop.
Each team must have a parent
manager who will attend games or
create a roster to ensure there is a
parent present at each game.
NSNA will not register a team without
a parent manager. The parent
manager is also responsible for the
“kit” containing balls and bibs.
Although the teams play as SGHS
teams, there will not be a teacher
present at the games. Parents should
therefore understand that
participation by their daughter in this
competition is their own responsibility.
Registration and payment will be
online. http://

February 2020 in the PE rooms.
The cut-off date for registration is
THURSDAY 13th February 2020. No
registrations made after that date will
be accepted.
Registration fees are $190, $90 after
the rebate. The Active Kids Rebate

As another year draws to a close I
would like to thank the players,
coaches, umpires, and support staff
for another great season of netball!
This year w,e had four teams make it
through to the grand final with two
winning overall, and many more
through to the finals series. As ever
Sydney Girls showed their competitive
nature combined with their good
sportsmanship. Our end of season
party was lots of fun and a great
opportunity to reflect on what was a
fantastic season we had. We have
said thank you and goodbye to our
wonderful umpires' convener of the
last two years, Daphne Zhang, and
welcome Kelly Li to the role.
In 2020 we look forward to gearing up
again for another promising season.
Grading day will be held on Sunday
16th of February 2020 in the multi
purpose hall commencing at
10:30am. The first game of the
season is on Saturday 28th of March.
More information will be sent out at
the start of the term. Registration
must be completed before grading

need c term. The fees will remain the
same as 2019 at $190. The active
kids voucher will be available again
and you can apply for yours at any
time from January 1st from service

Hopefully we will have lots of year 7's

Basketball
On 18 December, the
final day of school in
2019, SGHS hosted
North Sydney Girls
High (NSGHS) at
Alexandria Stadium
for the annual
Shierlaw Ng Cup.
This event is one of
the highlights on the
basketball calendar.
Over 200 students
from both schools
played 24 games over
4 hours.
As always, the
competition was
played in great spirit -
highly competitive but
with great respect and
sportsmanship.
NSG were the current
Cup holders, winning
in 2018. Last night's results were:
2 draws
7 wins to SGHS
15 wins to NSG
NSG retained the Cup for 2019, and
have now won 6 times, in the 7 year
history.
The event also includes the ever
popular and fiercely contested - Old
Girls Game - played between former
alumni of both schools.
The SGHS team:
Euginia Chen 2015
Whansae Chung 2015
Deborah Lee 2016
Yihong Li 2017
Christine Lu 2017
Julie Anna Ly 2018
Mai Otaki 2017
Christine Wu 2017
Jonita Zhou 2015
I am very happy to report SGHS won a
thrilling and high quality Old Girls
game, 25 to 19 points. The speed,
skill and athleticism of the young
women involved in this game was
outstanding.
Kind regards,
Michelle Howes

Waterpolo
Hi everyone,
It Jess and Lucia, your water polo
captain and vice captain for 2020.
SGHS water polo is a great way of
staying active during your studies,
making new friends and having fun!
This extracurricular activity offers
immense flexibility through the option
of just doing training, playing games
or both. If you would like to join you
don’t need any prior experience only a
positive attitude and eagerness to
learn a new sport! SGHS enters a
number of different water polo
competitions throughout the year in
Term 1 and Term 4. The fee per
student for each competition covers
competition entry costs, pool entry at
UNSW, coaches and training sessions.
Information will be sent out at the
start of each term about upcoming
competitions. Girls can commit to play
for just Term 1 and then decide on
other competitions as the year
progresses. The current parent
coordinator for water polo is Justine
Nolan ([email protected])
however we are looking for a parent to
take over the role. Please feel free to
contact her for more information. The
first training session will be Sunday 2
February from 9-10am at UNSW pool.
We hope to see you there!

Thank you to our Volunteers
The Canteen
Committee is
extremely grateful
to the 48 parents
who helped in the
canteen during 2019. Many helped
on a regular basis each term; some
specifically took time off work to help
whilst others found gaps in their busy
schedules to help. To all of you that
spared some time – thank you so
much!
For the school canteen to run
effectively, we do rely on volunteers.
So please, if you have previously
expressed an interest in assisting in
the Canteen or would like more
information, we would love to see or
hear from you. Please email
to [email protected] with
subject “Volunteer”, leave a note at
the canteen or contact Philip Sewell
0418 290 342
The Canteen is keen, through our
cooking to acknowledge cultural and
religious feast days. On the 2
December, the Canteen celebrated
Christmas. On the 4 February we
celebrated the Lunar New Year. If you
would like the Canteen to put on
special meals (and would like to help
too!) to celebrate a specific cultural or
religious day please do email us at
[email protected] with your
suggestions
Canteen Committee
The Canteen Committee is part of the
P&C with responsibility for overseeing
the running of the School Canteen
and generally meets once a
term. 2019 was a particularly busy
year for the Committee:
We introduced an online ordering
system in Term 3 which has helped
shorten queues and reduce waste and
has provided more transparency for
students and the canteen alike.
We also made changes to our canteen
menu in order to meet the mandatory
State requirements for a Healthy
School Canteen. We are particularly
indebted to Carrie Waring who tackled
the extensive auditing
and application process needed to
meet the State requirements
We expect 2020 to be much easier
for the Committee. However, we
urgently need new members and are
particularly keen for someone to take
on the Treasurer role. If you would
like to know more about the
Committee, please do get in touch
with us Please email
to [email protected] with
subject “Canteen Committee”, leave
a note at the canteen or contact Philip
