ons ofElan, daugh(t!Ts, too,
Bring their praise and homage tme.
In thy keeping there will be
Words and deed, to honor thee.
Hearken to the song they're singing
And the loyalty they're bringing.
Almd Mater, they will cherish thee;
Alma Mater, they will cherish thee .
Proud, the oak crees OIl thy hill
Offer shade and shadow ~til1.
Green the field.~ around thee lie;
Blue the Carolina sky.
Stately rise thy halls of learning;
Toward their portals we are turning.
Alma Mater. we Wll! chensh thee;
Alma Mater, we will cherish thee .
Elan, ever lead us on
To a bright and happy dawn.
Teach us still to love and pray;
Guide us to a nobler day.
Joyous music lies before us,
Memories to swel l the cborus.
Alma Mater, we will cherish thee;
Alma Mater, we will cherish thee.

ACADEMIC R£GALlA
The academic regalia worn by modern college :lnd universiry faculty and students originated ill medieval European universirie' and has undcrgonc little madification £inee the 16th c~ntury. As in th~ .MJ.ddle Ages, modern academic regali a signifies the wearer's academic accomplishmt'nt and con~ists of a gown or robe, head covering, and hood.. T11t' robe denotes the wearer's level of education. with the baccalaureate gown being ofsimple design with full ~ I eeves . The master's gown i.s similar to the baccalaurt:ate gown e..'i:cept that it has a closed or glo\'e sleeve that is open at the wnst. The doctoral gOWJl has velvet p~nels down the front md velvet chevrons on large bell-shaped sleeves. While most gowns lre black. some imtitlltions. like EloJl, choose robes in the school colors.
Tht' head covering most commonly assOCIated with acadt'mic regalia is the mortarboard decor:lted Wlth a tassel. Many who hold tbe doctorate weaT a velvet Tudor cap.
Jt is the bood that adds meaning to academic regalia. Changed little si.nce the Middle Ages, the hood fulls from the houlder~ down the back of the gown in a dlsplav of coloL A hood is usually black and edged in colored velvet denoting
the disciplines of the wearer's degree. The college or university awarding the degree is indIcated by tbe colors of the ilk lining.
In 1895, In Intercollegiate Code was adapted to specify design and appropriate colors for various degrees. The following colors identify the disciplines lllrucated .
