Adams had received the information from a reliable sources that No. 69 Highway will be started this year. This we feel is of great interest to all the people of Parry Sound and communities to the north. October 21, 1948 Boy Scout Apple Day a success Despite rather unfavorable weather the result of Apple Tag Day held Saturday proved satisfactory. Twenty fire bushels of apples were disposed of, the net returns being $154.00. This amount will be utilized to assist Scouting activities in the district next year. October 28, 1948 Tom Emes purchases Superior store here Thomas R. Emes of Arnprior has purchased the business of Norman Snelgrove (Superior Food Store), taking over the business on Monday October 25. Mr. and Ms. Emes were born in Parry Sound, Mrs. Emes being the former Gurneth Penney. Mr. Emes has been manager at Gananoque, Tweed and Arnprior for the Stedman Bros. Mr. Snelgrove has purchased a business in Shelburne, N.S. and will leave shortly for the east. October 28, 1948 Just beat this one The partridge season closed with a bang for Cyril Dorer of Nobel, when, while hunting near Dunchurch, he killed four partridge with one shot. Here’s how it was done: When looking up a short grade, Cyril saw a partridge. He shot, the bird dropped and when we went ahead to pick it up there was not only one dead bird, but four - believe it or not. He wounded a fifth but it got away. The birds were apparently huddled close together when the shot was fired. A witness to this unusual event is Joe Battersby. Gone are the mosquitoes and blackflies and the trees are in their glory. It’s a great time to be walking and taking photo- graphs. Our luncheon for the West Parry Sound Municipal Asso- ciation went very well and we received a standing ovation from all the mayors, reeves and coun- cillors for the food we served them. Thanks once again to all the kitchen staff and to Audrey for her biscuits and muffins which are always a big hit. The bid euchre tournament on Oct. 2 was well attended with 98 people playing. Congratulations to the winners. In first place was Vivian Hopkins with 382; tied for second place with 377 were Melinda McMurphy and Al Byers. Call One was won by John Junck. Moon shots were made by Margaret Studely, Marie Fitch- ett, Marilyn Jones, Marie Alves, Jean Pen- nington, Leona Ethrington, Ella Jerome, Al Byers, Bev Larouche, Morley Illman, Phyllis Rhodenizer and Bertha Gube. Door prize was won by Betty Hume and the Share the Wealth was won by Barb Frazer, Joan Penfold, Hugh Green and Sheila Ritchie. Thanks to every- one who attended and many thanks to Mary Ann Beck for donating the door prize and to all who donated prizes for the gift table and to the kitchen staff. It was a good day and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I must remark on Highway 518 as I have complained enough about it in the past. It’s a great road now and a plea- sure to drive on. It is certainly worth all the inconvenience dur- ing construction. There is a regular euchre tour- nament in Pointe au Baril on Tuesday, Oct. 21 and this looks like it will be the last tournament until the New Year. Birthday wishes for October go to Sally Carter, Phyllis Lawson, Edna MacLennan and Ruth McAlister. Don’t forget to get your snow tires on soon as old man winter is just around the corner. 1982 Muskoka District champs: On Sunday, Sept. 19, the Parry Sound Strikers made the trek to Bracebridge to take on the Centennials for the C. Lyons Realty Cup, emblematic of soccer supremacy in the Muskoka District Soccer Association. Despite losing all three regular season games to the Centennials, the Strikers came through when the chips were down, earning a 2 to 1 victory for their first championship ever.
