A Monthly Publication of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church – LCMS June/July 2017
The month of June begins with two Sunday festivals. These are a little later in the year than usual because of the later Easter.
Pentecost is the remembrance of
the pouring out of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles. It is sometimes called the “Birthday” of the Christian Church, because that was the event Jesus told his Apostles at his Ascension to go to Jerusalem and wait for. After being empowered by the Holy Spirit, the Apostles and indeed the Christian church spread out into all the world. The color of the paraments is Red, reminding us of the Holy Spirit’s appearance on the Disciples in the form of tongues of fire on their heads. Because of that, some people like to wear bright red to church that Sunday.
The Holy Spirit also, as a sign of what the church was to do, gave the Apostles the ability to speak the gospel in different languages. In a way, then, this event was reversing the curse of Babel, where because of the people’s pride and sin against God the Lord scattered the people and caused them to speak different languages.
The first Sunday after Pentecost is traditionally Holy Trinity Sunday, a Sunday where we remember how our God is One God, but Three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is a teaching that can be confusing, but is so important for us to remember and know, because it is Who our God IS. He works in unity,

but for our salvation, the Father sent the Son into our human nature to redeem us, and the Holy Spirit calls us to faith and gives us repentance and forgiveness. In our service, we utilize the Athanasian Creed as our creed.
Following Trinity Sunday, the church goes into what is sometimes called the non-festival half of the church year. The color of the paraments is green, signifying the growth the Spirit gives to the church through God’s Word, and the themes are more subtle. Nevertheless, God is at work, particularly in His Word. He is active where He promised he would act, and that is in His Word and Sacraments.
That is why it is so important not to remove ourselves from where God has said He would act and promised He would be. We all need vacations, that’s true, and variety in our lives is so important, but we can’t let ourselves get into a routine which keeps us away from where God has promised to be.
In fact, this summer, take the opportunity to ADD something that will bring you closer to God. Not just that you think will bring you closer to God, but that God has PROMISED will bring you closer to Him. Take up some extra Bible reading. Attend a conference where you can grow in your knowledge of His Word. If you need some help locating one or more of these, talk to me. There are several Bible studies that Mount Olive continues to offer in the summer, Sunday mornings at 8:25 and Tuesday mornings at 7:00 a.m. at Perkins. Try attending one of these.
I wish you God’s richest blessings these summer months.
In Christ our Lord,
Pastor Rob Franck

One last plug for the new audio CDs in our church library. There are two seasons of the
Jonathan Park adventures that were placed in our library. Jonathan Park action-packed
audio adventures are for kids and families. The stories are full of faith-building and
educational evidence for a Creator. If your family enjoys imaginative and immersive stories packed with biblical truth, then Jonathan Park is for you!
The Adventure Begins series is the first season. While running from a storm, Jonathan and his father collide with the Brenan family as they seek shelter in a hidden cave. After discovering a massive dinosaur graveyard, these two families combine forces to build a creation science museum to spread the message of the Creator!
Also purchased was season 9, The Whispering Sphinx series. Egypt is in political turmoil. On the verge of presidential elections, a mysterious tablet is found with a prophecy about the coming leader and his lineage to Pharaoh Ramses II That’s when the statue of the Great Sphinx begins to mysteriously “speak,” confirming the
message of the tablet Meanwhile, the Creation Response Team has learned that the research of Egyptian Chronologist will shake the foundations of modern archaeology Join Jonathan Park and the CRT as they race to the aid of a nation, and unlock the mysteries of Egypt’s past and present. All the series featured in the past few newsletters have been cataloged and are available to check out on the library’s table outside the library in the fellowship hall.

Notes from the Executive Director
Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
I apologize for missing the deadline last month for
the newsletter but Julie could only wait so long.
Despite entering what has been reported to be the
summer season there have been lots of things
going on at Mount Olive. The air-conditioning
system for the offices has been replaced and the
new system will provide better service and energy efficiency.
Unfortunately the flat roof of the church has been leaking and previous
attempts at repairing the roof have been unsuccessful. Bids are being
obtained for potentially replacing the flat roof which would be a major
project and potentially costing in the range of $20,000 (or more If there
is significant damage between the roof and ceiling). Prior to any formal
decision being made on the roof we would anticipate a congregational
informational meeting to seek input regarding which of the options
would be preferred. Due to the blessing of the members and the
increased activities at Mount Olive there have been more "tasks"
required/necessary to support our members and activities and the Board
of Elders discussed options for meeting these needs. It was felt that
rather than the "traditional" method of various Boards (e.g. Properties,
Evangelism, etc) where regular meetings were held (and excluding the
fellowship there was an actuality little accomplished/required at the
meetings) that when projects arise members time could be better used by
forming small groups for the project. This would enable Mount Olive to
maintain its facilities in better condition and at a lower cost than
purchasing the services required. There are several of these projects "on
the horizon" including refurbishing the basement bathrooms. We will
continue to keep you apprised of this process and would request your
prayerful consideration of participating in these projects as they arise in
the future.
As we enter the summer season all of our schedules become increasingly
busy and free time becomes limited. I would hope and pray that everyone
has a safe end enjoyable summer but also hope that everyone continues
to find time to worship each week at Mount Olive to give thanks to the
Lord for all the blessings he has bestowed upon us and share in the
wonderful fellowship which is Mount Olive.
Yours in Christ,
Ed Martinson.

Notes from the Treasurer
As of May 10, 2017 the LCEF
loan balance is $65,790. An
extra $2,500 from pledges and
contributions was paid on the
loan in addition to our budgeted
monthly payments since January
of 2017. These donations help
reduce the length of the
mortgage loan taken out in
September of 2015. The original loan was for 15 years but with the
extra payments we are currently looking at a loan of about 11 years in
length.
Tim and Marianne Jezierski along with the kitchen crew have a fund
raising dinner every spring. Several years ago the money raised went
into a fund to help purchase air conditioning for the offices and Upper
Room.
Last year during the budget process, the Elders added money to the
budget to complete this process which was approved by the voters in
December 2016. The air conditioning was installed and paid for in
May.
Our operating fund balance has remained on the positive side through
the first part of 2017 which is due in part to some unspent funds from
2016 that were allocated toward 2017 expenses.
Contact me if you have any questions. In future newsletters I will
recap our loan balance and other items of financial interest. The
monthly Treasurer’s and Financial Secretary’s reports are posted in
the upper room. Contact Financial Secretary, Keri Lynn Igo, for any
questions on your giving statements or pledge.
Yours in Christ,
Kaye Tanttari, Treasurer

From the
Church Office…
Summer Greetings!!
Summer is in full swing. The kids will be
released from school soon and we will all be involved in the crazy dance
of summer programs and holidays! I have included in my notes the
liturgical color and meaning for the Epiphany and Pentecost seasons.
Enjoy! I have always been fascinated with the seasonal liturgical colors.
I hope everyone has a nice and slow paced summer; mainly so we can
enjoy the season before it leaves us! The office is open in the summer so
if you need us give me a call. Don’t forget the newsletter deadline for
the August issue which will be July 20th. The 2016 Annual Report is still
“in the works.”
Enjoy your summer – and stay safe!!
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads!
God Bless you!
Julie
Litergical colors: Lutheran Service Book calls for Green during the seasons of
Epiphany and Pentecost.
The first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox, also
known as Easter Sunday, determines the length of these two seasons. The days of
Epiphany may entail a total of, but not more than, eight Sundays. The season of
Pentecost, on the other hand, can last from 22 to 28 Sundays. Green is the
appointed color for all but a few of the Sundays during these seasons.
Consequently, green may be used an average of six to eight months of any given
liturgical year! Page 3 of 6 Epiphany's message of Christ's revelation to the
Gentiles along with the season's traditional emphasis on extending Christ's
kingdom through missions, calls for the use of green—the color symbolic of
growth. The Sundays following Pentecost, observed as "the time of the church,"
share a somewhat similar theme as that of Epiphany. Affectionately called the
season of the "green meadow," no doubt due to the fact of green being the
established color, these Sundays also emphasize the subject of growth. Green is a
neutral color, but there is nothing colorless about our
need to grow and mature as disciples of Jesus Christ.
That's why the "green meadow" time of the church
year is so lengthy (thanks to the Re. Douglas K.
Escue from the LCMS as reference).

Mission Sunday June 18
Rev. Daniel Jastram
Rev. Dr. Daniel and Dr. Joan Jastram serve the Lord as career missionaries through The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod (LCMS) in northern Asia, based in Tokyo, Japan. In this role Daniel helps develop and implement a strategic mission plan for this area. He coordinates theological education opportunities and also supervises and evaluates theological educators throughout northern Asia. When needed, Daniel teaches courses at Japan Lutheran Theological Seminary, Tokyo.
Daniel was born in Shibata, Japan and raised overseas in an LCMS missionary family. His childhood congregation was Shibata Lutheran Church, Japan. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, and both a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his Master of Divinity from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Ind. Before serving in Asia, he was a professor of theology at Concordia University, St. Paul, St. Paul, Minn., and Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon. He also served as sole pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church, Forest Lake, Minn. In his free time, Daniel enjoys reading, hiking and bookbinding.
Joan was born in Mitchell, S.D., where her childhood congregation was Zion Lutheran Church. She received both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion. She received her Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree from the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Twin Cities, Minn. Before her missionary service in Asia, Joan worked as a clinical psychologist and plans to continue in this capacity. Joan enjoys reading, hiking and cooking in her free time.
Please pray for Daniel and Joan as they serve in northern Asia. Pray for them as they transition to life in Asia, re-adapting their family’s culture and way of life to these new surroundings. Ask God to give them renewed zeal to go out and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to the individuals they encounter where they work and live. Please pray the hearts and ears of the people of Japan and northern Asia are prepared to hear and confess this Good News and the life that it brings. Ask God to continue to give strength and guidance to the missionaries currently serving in this area. Let us give thanks to God for the Jastrams who serve His children in this part of the world!

Operation Backpack
Mount Olive Lutheran Church would like YOUR help to collect funds for Operation Backpack. We will be having a good will offering during our Operation Backpack Brunch on Sunday, July 16, after the service.
Operation backpack is a drive that collects brand new school supplies for homeless children to help them thrive in school. Thousands of children are homeless and live in a shelter and one of the most devastating consequences of that is the impact it has on the child’s education.
Thank you for all your contributions!

Food for your body • Food for your soul.
Mt. Olive Food Shelf News: The food shelf has been hard hit recently, and the usual $300.00 per month has not been enough. We’ve been spending around $100.00 more each month; as a result, the food shelf fund is getting quite low, with only about $130.00 left.
If you are able to pick up a few extra items when you go to the grocery store, they can be left by the cabinet in the Upper Room. If you prefer not to shop, a check or cash can be put in the offering plate and marked “food shelf.”
Items most needed are soup, canned fruit, canned pasta and meat, tuna, peanut butter, jelly/jam, cereal, ramen, rice, mac and cheese, pasta and pasta sauce, canned veggies and juice. Non-food items include deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, lotion and soap.
Anything you can give would be much appreciated! Thank you!
Statistics beginning 4/26/10 – total served = 99; 2011 total served = 229; 2012 total served = 251 (26 Bibles); 2013 total served = 317 (20 Bibles); 2014 total served = 452 (10 Bibles); 2015 total served = 466 (18 Bibles); 2016 total served = 346 (16 Bibles) Total served thru May = 174 (11 Bibles)
Actual monthly totals are posted on the cabinet door in the Upper
Room.

And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.

Dear LWML-ers,
Just a quick report on today's rally and God's gift of a beautiful day to drive the Shore There were 31 women and 3 pastors attending and enjoying a really tasty lunch of chicken salad, fruit cup, croissant and cakes-to-die-for. Pastor Rudloff told about some upcoming workdays for the Grand
Marais church on May 20 and June 10 and added that he will soon be retiring after doing church work for 50 years, and there will be a vacancy there. Pastor Franck related five mileposts about Martin Luther, the Reformation-time, and consequences for the Christian church. And he emphasized especially the
impact on Luther of the text in Romans 1:16-17 and how Luther ALWAYS tried to keep the emphasis on the righteousness of Jesus. There will be a special gathering in St. Paul at Concordia University observing the Reformation time in the fall. Watch for news. We really do need someone who will volunteer to be secretary for a couple of years because I cannot do this after four years on the job, according to the by-laws. Please consider and give Carol Walczak a call if you are willing. Good news, so keep up the good work: Mites have exceeded the
half-way goal, so far. Today's Ingathering for the Veterans' Home in Silver Bay was generous, too. God has been at work, we can see.
Skit Crew, St. Matthew's. Here are two good friends about to enjoy their lunch. Sincerely, Kathy Hass

Mt. Olive LWML Meeting May 21, 2017
President Carol Walczak opened the meeting with a devotion entitled “Circle of Light.” The meeting was called to order at 11:10. Secretary’s minutes of the March meeting were accepted since they had been posted and sent by email to members and needed no revision. The treasurer reported a balance of $205.78. Old Business Gayle and Pastor Franck sent a note of thanks for our assisting them with the costs of attending a conference in June, “Making the Case.” The Spring Rally was held in Silver Bay at Faith Lutheran Church. Carol received, from the district office, that it was felt some small corrections were needed to our society’s bylaws, mostly clerical items. Julie Igo reported progress in the preparation of the cookbook and hopes for more recipes to be submitted. She also presented possibilities for a title and we voted to call the book “Be Our Guest.” New Business New projects were discussed. Items for use by St. Luke’s Mental Health Unit in 3 West will be collected over the summer. Carol will place information and a list in the June-July Newsletter. Items will be collected in a box in the Upper Room until the September meeting. To fill the treasury it was decided to hold a fund raiser on August 6, a taco bar, during the coffee time after church. We also discussed having a “ladies tea” to roll out our new cookbook, “Be Our Guest,” in October – perhaps having it be a potluck with ladies bringing recipes that they submitted for the cookbook. This idea will be discussed more at our next meeting. The next LWML meeting is scheduled for September 10. Respectfully submitted, Kathy Hass, Secretary

Thank You Mount Olive
Thank you to all who attended
our surprise 30th wedding
anniversary party and those who
remembered us with cards. We
give all thanks and praise to God
alone for what He has
accomplished through the lives of our family. We are grateful to
our church family here at Mt. Olive for the love and care you have
shown our family over the past two decades. God has blessed us
beyond what we could have imagined through Mt. Olive.
Pastor and Gayle
Thank you for all the beautiful cards of
comfort we received on the death of our
mother, mother-in-law and grandmother
Norma Jean Davis. We appreciate the
thoughts and prayers for our family. Christ is
risen, thanks be to God.
Dear Relatives and friends, I have tried to write this letter many times but don’t know just how I am able to thank you all for your prayers, visits and support. I know I would not be alive and able to write and think if it weren’t for all of you and the response of my Heavenly Father to our prayers.
I fell the first time Saturday, 3/10/17 about midnight in the bathroom. I was unconscious for about 20 minutes and when I came to I didn’t call 911. The next day my daughter Erin called and found out about the fall. They took me to St. Mary’s where we discovered I had a lot of blood on the brain. After a week I was released and went home. On March 10 I fell again and Leaslin found me at 7:30 am and was taken to St. Mary’s. They found a lot more fluid on my brain and started treating me. After a lot of treatment I was moved to Miller-Dwan for rehabilitation. I began to have seizures and after a lot of exams and medication I was able to finally able to slowly start

speaking again. I was released to go home with a walker and many restrictions on April 11
th.
Except for your prayers and God’s gift I would have died. The one thing that really bothered me so much is that I could not pray. The prayers would not come. The Lord’s Prayer I had known since I was two years old would not come. I relied completely on the Holy Spirit t groan and pray for me. I will never take any prayer for granted or say it carelessly again.
My sincere and grateful thank you to all of your interceding prayers for me.
Psalms 4/13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” Hebrews 11/1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen” Galatians 6/9 (my confirmation verse) “Be ye not weary in well doing, for in due season ye shall reap, I ye faint not” Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof. Love in Christ, Evelyn Grace Frazier.
Congratulations to John & Jeanny
Jezierski; who celebrated their union
with a Blessing Ceremony at Mt.
Olive.
Thank you to all who attended the Food Shelf Fundraiser. We raised around $300.00 and numerous food items were donated. Ongoing support is needed, however. Please keep it in your prayers and donations every month. We have various people who rely on our generosity every week. Thank You!
