ne of the key aspirations of YES is to engage youth in the process of

self-development to benefit themselves as well as their communities. In this regard, YES has conceptualized, developed and implemented a Youth Volunteering Program to enthuse, educate and empower youth to take initiatives to serve others with their talents and develop themselves in the process. The core purpose of the program is to facilitate youth to see volunteerism as a strong tool for self-development as well as for community service. The program engaged 27 young people selected from 57 applicants. Through a variety of activities, they were engaged in reflecting on the purpose of life, significance of volunteerism

for self-development and need of active community service. Nooruddin Merchant, Project Manager-YES and Syed Mohammad Mehdi Program Officer-YES facilitated three full-day sessions; the participants will be engaged in various voluntary activities with YES as well as in designing and implementing commu-nity service projects for their own commu-nities.

ES-team invites people from different walks of life to talk to youth and

facilitate YES in refining ideas for youth empowerment. In this regard on Monday, October 30, 2012, famous Pakistani producer/actor Mani (Salman Saquib Sheikh) met YES and iACT teams. Mani visited the premises and appreciated the efforts of H.U.F. and the Department of Youth Affairs for initiating these innova-tive projects. He especially felt amazed to see state-of-the-art facilities and was impressed by the quality of services. He shared the story of his journey to stardom and advised the youth vis-à-vis their career and life. He emphasized on the importance of setting goals and the blueprints of plans to achieve one’s goals. He assured of his cooperation for promotion of YES and other youth initiatives.

number of youth nowadays is living with challenges related to stress, low

self-esteem, anxiety, hatred, jealousy, and other emotional issues. When it comes to female youth, the severity of the issue increases because of societal norms for not sharing psychosocial issues with others and unavailability of spaces for sharing and getting advice on such issues. In this overall context, YES has initiated a program to provide young females a trustworthy space to share their psychoso-cial issues with an expert and get her advice and guidance to cope with

personal issues. The program will also engage young females in collective sessions for raising awareness and skill building to ameliorate their own psycho-social health. Following two activities were done in this regard.

itled as ‘Main aur Meri Zindagi’, an inaugural seminar of two hours was

conducted by Dr. Sidra on Thursday October 18, 2012. It was attended by around 100 young females and their mothers. Dr. Sidra genuinely discussed

how life moving from one phase to the other tends to bring changes, and the real trouble starts when we fail to address these changes appropriately. Many of the participants agreed that their lack of confidence, fear and weak decision

making powers cause complications in their lives. Participants agreed that they tend to focus so much on the crisis, they never actually seek a way out. Dr Sidra assured she would facilitate them in finding answers to their problems.

fter the launching seminar, partici-pants were invited to take appoint-

ments for personal advice as well. On October 25, 2012, 7 girls met Dr. Sidra

to discuss their individual and personal problems related to their Psychosocial Health and got the personal advice. Dr. Sidra not only helped them, she collected

the data form these sessions to under-stand the overall trends and patterns to further expand the program.

YES HIGHLIGHTSNovember 2012

Youth- Inspirational Stories of Self Development

Haseeb Siddique pursuing a diploma in mechanical engineering and Muzammil Anees an intermediate student are diehard fans of sports. They live in an area where no space for sports is available. Thus CONNECT could be a platform where they quenched their thirst for trying a variety of sports easily. Already excellent in cricket and football, they wanted to try something new. Volleyball clicked them instantly and they started learning this sport. With sheer passion they learned volleyball in just 6 days in YES Summer Camp. It was the support and appreciation they received by CONNECT mentors that made Haseeb and Muzammil to take their passion further ahead. They started saving money to buy volleyball equipment. Fortunately, they found a deserted grass ground in their area. What could be better than that! The volleyball net was set and this

game was played in an area where only cricket was dominant. All the boys would gather around their court to watch matches. Some showed interest in playing this while others remained spectators. These amazing CONNECT members are now teaching volleyball to whoever wants to learn. Haseeb feels proud of this development and wishes that more sports avenues would be created in his area. Haseeb has exceled in cricket and has been selected for Pakistan Under-19 Cricket Team.

Journey of Wajiha Shafi is a true anecdote of empowerment. Wajiha would hardly socialize or interact with people when she joined CONNECT in 2011. Pursuing a Diploma in Information Technology (IT), she joined CONNECT for learning more about IT and reading books in the library only but she did not know the way CONNECT could motivate and transform youth. Wajiha shares that her initial exposure was so overwhelming

and facilitators were so encouraging that she readily started adapting herself. She enrolled in courses of Photoshop and Video Editing and now is a proud certificate-holder in both these courses. She made friends who helped her hobnob and henceforth gained confidence. Wajeeha joined CONNECT volunteers which led her to YES Volunteer Training Program. Wjeeha is now a trained volunteer, currently doing her assigned project. Wajiha happily shares with new CONNECT members how her personality changed ever since she joined CONNECT.

Haseeb & Muzammil– two young leaders

Wajiha’s Journey of Empowerment

CONNECT provides a number of facilities and services free-of-charge to youth. YES initiated the second round of registration for interested youth this year. 1625 forms were issued and 719 forms were received. Total number of forms received from male applicants was 521 and from female applicants it was 198.

719 young people, who submitted their registration forms for membership, were interviewed by YES-team in order to know them and understand their purpose of joining YES-team. Besides interviews, all the new members were supported to fill in a detailed Profile Form. Profiling data was for helping YES-team to understand the current status of the youth regarding their interests, skills and areas they need support in and the like.

CONNECT Interviews and Profiling

To provide an orientation to new members, YES-team organized a series of seminars to help them get acquainted with YES projects, its themes, CONNET program with services and facilities which could be availed being a CONNECT member. Total 16 seminars were conducted for 719 members.
