  • Celebrating our Celebrating our Grads!Grads! It is that time of year again when we celebrate the Highlands grads in our midst! Some of you (or your children or grandchildren) are graduating/have graduated from gr. 12 or

a post secondary program this spring, and we would like to acknowledge these people on Sunday, June 11. We will include a little write-up on each grad in Highlights, and for those who can be present that morning, we will invite them to come up front as we read something about each person. So, if there is a grad in your family, could you please send a little write up no later than Wednesday, June 7 that includes: · Name and connection to Highlands (eg. did they sing in G2; on summer staff, Sunday School teacher, musician, attended worship, volunteered in the Flea Market, participate in Summer programs….) Also are you writing this on behalf of your child/grandchild (we like to know who is related to whom!) - up to 4 – 5 sentences.

    · What program are they graduating from

    · What are their future plans?

    · A picture would be wonderful too!

Could you also please indicate if the graduate will be present in church on Sunday June 11th?

Send your write up to Allie or Andria ([email protected]) by email (with photo attached to the email) or drop off a copy at the church office marked ‘grad write up’.

  • Sleep and Memory Q&A with Dr. Glenn Landry, Thursday, June 15th at 10:30 Dr. Landry will give a follow up to the outstanding presentation he gave on March 1st at the Seniors connection event, on the topic of sleep and seniors.

When Dr. Landry was with us on March 1st, there was little time for questions so he has agreed to come back and respond to individual questions.

Glenn is a postdoctoral researcher at UBC looking at the connection between sleep deprivation or poor quality of sleep, and memory /cognitive impairment among seniors. Glenn’s research goal is to identify interventions capable of extending capacity for independent living but his research has implications for all adults.

This event is open to anyone wishing to attend and sign up is required. There will be refreshments (no lunch) and admission is by donation.

Sign up at the Action Table or email Colleen Blair at: [email protected]

  • A Message from Highlands Refugee Committee and the North Shore United Churches Refugee Response Group: Our Immigrant Families in Canada Both NSURR sponsored families arrived safely in Vancouver on April 23 after a long flight from Erbil, Iraq, via Frankfurt and Montreal, tired but happy – the children were particularly enthusiastic. They were moved quickly to their fully furnished apartments in Burnaby.

Since then, our team has been hard at work, helping the families with paperwork and the ritual of daily life in Canada. The children are now in school, and the parents are beginning to settle into their new lives. Our ESL team will be offering English language classes over the summer to supplement formal training. Enthusiasm and smiles have worked well to overcome limited language exchanges – the atmosphere is very relaxed, warm and welcoming on both sides.

The families have been anxious for opportunities to express their appreciation for the churches who are part of our coalition. For our part, we feel the need to give them space to adjust. However, at their request, one family visited Lonsdale United on April 23.

The second family also wants to have direct contact. They will be visiting St. Andrews United on June 4 to attend the 10:00am service. It will be a big day with Pentecost, Communion, the choir’s last Sunday before summer break and our wonderful guests! St. Andrew’s has extended the invitation to other congregations as well. There will be a chance to meet the family at fellowship time after the service (about 11:15?). While their 3rd language of English is still limited, their brilliant smiles communicate beautifully!

  • A Message from First United Church in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Hello friends,

I hope this finds you all well. Blessings on our warm weather. I picture people having picnics in the park and playing badminton with friends and loved ones (my personal favorite).

On May 23rd, we welcomed a group of youth from Mount Seymour United church. They baked cookies and distributed to the shelter residents. Our community doesn’t always have a care free time during warmer weather (though a nice reprieve from the rain!) so it was great to see the smiles and witness the connection. And, who doesn’t love cookies?! We are now collecting items for the summer months which include: Hats, Sunglasses, summer shorts and t-shirts, sunscreen / after sun lotion and bottled water. Thank you in advance for your kind donations.
