Highlights from Strategic Agendas
Questions
1. What aspects of your Strategic Agenda have you been able to accomplish?
2. For which aspects of your Strategic Agenda have you run into barriers or challenges that make them seem unachievable?
• CDL / Laine Farley• Berkeley / Brian Quigley• Davis / Gail Yokote• Irvine / Cynthia Johnson• LA / Todd Grappone• Merced / Emily Lin• Riverside / Diane Bisom• Santa Barbara / NA• Santa Cruz / NA• San Diego / Ardys Kozbial• San Francisco / NA
CDLPresenter: Laine Farley
• Accomplishments– Progress made on all objectives except one (1c) but nothing completely
“done” yet– Use quarterly checkins to assess progress and adjust objectives as needed
• Challenges– Progress on ontologies (1c) and data/journal metric (2b) have been
delayed/deferred due to resource constraints or other dependencies but do not yet seem unachievable
– A number of objectives are still in the “explore” stage so that achievability is unknown, and we expect some items may not be accomplished in this FY due to dependencies on collaborators/partners
• Attended Dec 2012
UC BerkeleyPresenter: Brian Quigley
• Accomplishments– Developed a robust instructional program for scientific data
management– Advocated for library administrative oversight of e-research issues;
currently recruiting for an AUL and Director of Digital Initiatives & Collaborative Services
• Challenges– Transitional state of the Library and IS&T administrative structures has
been a barrier to cultivating new leadership and partnerships– Ongoing library re-envisioning has delayed implementation and
promotion of e-research services as we wait for new priorities, structures & assignments to be determined
UC DavisPresenter: Gail Yokote
• Accomplishments– Key Campus Stakeholders Increased Awareness– Office of Research & IET Enhanced Relationships– Future Library Services Potential Described in Key
Campus Report
• Challenges– Delay in Making Programmatic/Financial Commitments– Coordination Time Constraints
UC IrvinePresenter: Cynthia Johnson
• Accomplishments– Identified academic partners in departments & administrative units to
work with who are managing “big” and complex data– Joined Office of Information Technology (OIT) & Office of Research to
conduct more thorough campus survey of IT and data support needs (Fall 2012)
• Challenges– Defining librarian roles & responsibilities / Training– Hold campus summit to learn, explain and share how to best address
eResearch needs for data management • These are not unachievable, but have been challenging due to the library’s
changing organizational structure, small staff and evolving campus landscape
UCLAPresenter: Todd Grappone
• Accomplishments– Data Curation/Consultation
• Our "Informationist“• 10 Data Consultations
– Increased use of the DMPTool• over 100 users at UCLA• Increase in usage can be linked to outreach
• Challenges– Internal Library Resources and Pushback– Strategic Outreach
• Campus strategic planning fatigue
UC MercedPresenter: Emily Lin
• Accomplishments– Initiated pilot with faculty member – Initiated planning with Office of Research for joint
workshops/programs
• Challenges– Prioritization and attention from campus
stakeholders given competing needs
• Attended Dec 2012
UC RiversidePresenter: Diane Bisom
• Accomplishments– EZID Account established for UCR by the Libraries; in use by Bourns College of
Engineering (BOCE) since 2012; The Libraries and the College of Engineering have interest in developing strategies for expansion of EZID to other academic and research units on campus
– Establishment of eScholarship site as the repository for BCOE journal articles and technical reports, with automatic EZID assignment during upload. A tutorial for BOCE researchers has been created and made available. Engineering Librarian Michele Potter, worked with BCOE staff to design tutorial.
• Challenges– Departure of VC for Research in June 2012; Appointment of new VC for Research and
Economic Development in July 2012 – Temporary Assignment of AVC CIO as Interim VC of Finance and Business Operations in
July 2012. Incumbent does not currently have time in his schedule to formalize planning for e-research with the Libraries and may not have time until the position is filled.
UC San DiegoPresenter: Ardys Kozbial
• Accomplishments– Created an ideal staffing plan for the Library’s Research Data
Curation Program– As part of the campus Research Cyberinfrastructure (RCI),
working with 5 research labs as pilot projects.
• Challenges– As data curation becomes more popular, there is competition
on campus around who owns the activity.– The Library’s reorganization process has slowed momentum.
New resources (people) have not yet been assigned to the program and the AUL has changed.
