Ex i FDC: Power Management unique Softstart function
Soft-Start: If the voltage on the trunk exceeds 16 V, one spur after the other is energized. This
reduces a high start-up current.
Conventional fieldbus barriers:
During start-up of a fieldbus segment, each device may consume a start-up current of up to 40 mA (see
IEC61158-2)
- the fieldbus power supply needs to supply this high current (= oversized for normal operation)!
- a higher voltage drop needs to be considered – this reduces allowed segment lengths
Fieldbus barrier with soft-start
During start-up each barrier starts one spur/field device after the other
- fieldbus power supply needs to deliver less power
- much lower voltage drop allows nearly double segment extension
