ForewordThe National Heritage Board (NHB) has a bevy of exciting exhibitions and programmes planned for 2016. With the recognition of key competencies necessary to thrive in the 21st century, we are continually working to ensure that our content and programming remains at cutting edge of heritage education. We have actively partnered with the Ministry of Education, Early Childhood Development Agency and an array of educators, schools, institutions and educational organisations to provide engaging and quality learning experience to enable teachers and students to discover Singapore’s shared history and heritage to achieve the Desired Outcomes of Education. This brochure is intended as a one-stop, easy referencing tool for educators to peruse the various events and activities our museums and institutions have to offer. It is our belief that heritage should be an important component of every stage of the education live cycle, and our exhibitions and programmes cater for students from pre-school to tertiary levels. Heritage Trail Adoption SchemeSuitable Ages Primary - Tertiary institutions and Community Partners. Since 1999, National Heritage Board has been developing heritage trails to promote appreciation for our local history and heritage. The Heritage Trail Adoption Scheme aims to encourage greater appreciation and interest in our local history and heritage. Under this scheme, schools and community partners are given the opportunity to adopt one of NHB’s heritage trails where training will be provided to train students and community volunteer guides as trail guides for the adopted trail which will be integrated into the school curriculum or into the partner’s programme.

The programme has since grew and currently its guiding training programme has been extended to schools and community partners who have developed their very own heritage trails. For more information, please email Joanne Chen at [email protected] or call 6332 5483

MUSEUM ETIQUETTETo enjoy the best museum experience during school visits, we need your help to inform your students to observe the following etiquette. A short video on Museum Etiquette is available for viewing. Please visit http://www.nhb.gov.sg/education/resources-for-families

How to maximise the benefits of a museum tour?• Listen attentively to the museum guide.• Ask questions on any aspect of the exhibitions and artefacts you wish to know more about.• Closely observe the artefacts, paintings or works of art.• Take turns to explore the hands-on activities which are available in some galleries.

What do you do during individual/group work?• Conduct yourself properly when on an independent tour or remain with your group at all times.• Work together quietly on the worksheets provided.• Although discussion in the galleries is encouraged, please keep the volume respectfully low. The museum is a place for observing, thinking, and quiet discussion.• Use pencils instead of pens to write notes.

What is considered proper conduct in the museums?• Be considerate to other visitors by keeping voices down.• Do not lean on glass panels and showcases, or use them to write answers on the worksheets. This may break the glass, tip the showcase or damage the artefacts.• Help us preserve the artefacts and artwork by not touching them, unless otherwise stated.• Eating or drinking in the gallery is not permitted.• Flash photography inside the galleries is not allowed. The flash from the camera might cause harm to the artefacts, especially vulnerable materials made of paper as they may fade. Accumulated exposure to strong lighting, like flash light can cause coloured pigments to fade. Please note that copyright issues have to be taken into consideration even if photography is allowed in the galleries.
