To everyone born in
February, enjoy your
Special Day!
In 1926 an African-American historian, Carter G.
Woodson and the Association for the Study of African
American Life & History, launched the first black history
week. They chose the second week in February which held
the birthdays of two major figures in black history, and particularly in the fight
against slavery: Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, President Gerald
Ford was the first to decree Black History Month a national observance.

Don’t share saliva with your baby
by sharing spoons, licking their
pacifiers or pre -chewing their food.
Place only formula, milk, breast milk, or water in
baby bottles. Infants should not be put to bed with a
bottle.
If your child uses a pacifier, give them one that is
clean. Don’t put it in your mouth first or dip it in
sugar, honey, or other sweetened liquids.
Encourage your children to drink from a cup by
their first birthday and don’t let your child sip all day
from a training (sippy) cup with sweetened beverages.
Brush your children’s teeth until they are able to
do so themselves, usually around age 8. Then, supervise
their brushing to make sure they brush thoroughly
(2 minutes, twice a day) & spit out the toothpaste
afterward.
Encourage healthy eating habits that include a diet
with plenty of vegetables, fruits & whole grains. Serve
nutritious snacks to your kids & limit sweets to
mealtimes.
Make sure that your kids get the fluoride they
need. Discuss your kids’ specific fluoride needs with
your dentist or pediatrician.
Your child should begin to
visit a Dentist regularly by their
1st birthday. Teeth cleanings
remove tartar. Tartar makes it
hard to clean teeth. Cleanings
can also help to get rid of stains
that can’t be removed with
brushing and flossing.
Tips to Prevent Kids’ Tooth Decay
Kids need strong, healthy
baby teeth to chew their food,
speak and have a good-looking smile.
Baby teeth also keep a space in the
jaw for permanent teeth. If a baby
tooth is lost too early, the
permanent tooth beside it may drift
into the empty space. When it's
time for the other permanent teeth
to come in, there may not be enough
room. This can make the teeth
crooked or crowded.
As soon as teeth appear in
your baby’s mouth, it’s possible for
your baby to develop cavities.
Starting your babies off with good
oral care can help protect their
teeth for life.
Begin cleaning your baby's
mouth during the first few days
after birth. After every feeding,
wipe your baby's gums with a clean
washcloth or a finger brush. This
removes plaque and food, and helps
your baby become used to having his
or her gums and teeth cleaned.
Once your child’s teeth start
to come in, brush using a children’s
toothbrush & fluoride free tooth-
paste in an amount no more than the
size of a grain of rice. Let your
child "help" with the brushing -- you
brush a bit, and then he does some.

Community Voices
Community Voices is a group of parents who come together to discuss what issues affect children and
families and what can be done to improve their circumstances in the community. The group gives parents a
powerful voice that reaches policy makers at the local and state levels. It also functions as a support group
for parents as they build relationships and learn from each other.
At monthly Community Voices meetings, parent leaders from across the Family Support Network
come together to discuss issues affecting their children, families, and communities. Parents grow in
leadership and support one another in developing valuable advocacy skills. Working together, parent leaders
find that they have a powerful voice that reaches policy makers, human services professionals, and state and
local legislators. Along with the Family Support Network’s other parent-led groups, Community Voices
enables parent leaders to create positive change in their communities and help shape the future of
family-serving programs throughout Allegheny County.
Why should parents be involved in
Community Voices?
Parents are the best spokespersons and make
the strongest case for services, prevention
programs, and community change.
Parents have hands-on experience that gives
them authority to make decisions about
programs that serve families.
Parents get support and information at the
meetings that they may not otherwise receive.
Parents can build on leadership and grow
further in the Family Support movement.
Community Voices parents are recognized as
leaders and called to speak at conferences and
public events on behalf of families.
*Community Voices meets on the third Friday of each
month at different Family Support Centers that
provide on-site childcare.
The next Community Voices meeting will be:
Friday February 17th at the Braddock-East FCC
from 10am-12pm. Miss Krystle can provide
transportation to anyone interested in going. If
interested please call the center.
