From the EditorDuring the coming months, visitors and locals alike have a wonderful array of events to attend or participate in, as this very diverse and rich area offers up its best.
Early in the January, Picton will host the annual Picton Rodeo and later in January, the Illawarra Folk Club will hold its annual Folk Festival, offering an eclectic mix of music from a variety of cultures and styles.
Participate and enjoy a real ‘Aussie day’ out this year when Berrima celebrates Australia Day in style once again! Lots of fun, entertainment and market stalls, plus the usual parade and awards ceremony will make this event a day not to be missed.
If you enjoy a good old fashioned country show, then you can look forward to the Robertson and Moss Vale Shows. These events have all the excitement of large regional shows with the usual line up of
interesting agricultural attractions, as well as novelty events and sideshows.
Don’t miss the Rose Festival in Goulburn. This festival will feature rose displays, bus tours of the public rose gardens, an art exhibition and demonstrations. Stalls will include craft stalls and jewellery.
Throughout 2015, Bundanoon will celebrate 150 years. Residents are planning to host a variety of events and activities that will highlight the richness and diversity of this delightful village.
For the devotees of theatre, the superb Highlands Theatre Group will present an Agatha Christie murder mystery. ‘A Murder is Announced’. If you are a local, you will be familiar with the regular productions offered by the Highlands Theatre Group. So prepare yourself to be dazzled by yet another fine production.

There are so many highlights associated with Robertson’s annual show it’s hard to single out any particular event. From the moment the gates open on Friday, 6 March until the spectacular fireworks display the following evening, this year’s show program promises to be one of the best ever presented with something for all members of the family.
Over the two days, the spotlight will shine on the centre ring where horse and rider team up to impress the judges as they strive for the elusive championship ribbons.
Early indications are that the Hindmarsh Pavilion will be a popular venue as patrons cast their eyes over a vast number of categories including craft, needlework, flowers and cakes on display.

A MISS MARPLE MURDER MYSTERY
www.highlandsimag.com.au 19
A Cast is Announced Following an information evening on December 1st, the Highlands Theatre Group held open auditions on Sunday, December 7th for their first play to be presented in 2015, Agatha Christie’s classic murder mystery, ‘A Murder Is Announced’.
The audition afternoon in Bowral attracted a large number of diverse, highly talented individuals, all sharing the same ambition. That being, to secure one of the twelve roles in this complex and extremely clever drawing room comedy, featuring of course, the equally clever and complex super sleuth, Miss Marple.
Congratulations, must go to the following recipients of the seven major roles: Jan Merriman, Maryanne Bawden, Kirsty Clancy, Kirrily Hope, Tiana Hope- Nicholson, Steven Gray and Thomas Moss.
They, along with the rest of the cast next February, will lead their audience down many a twisting, turning, pathway, presenting them with a myriad of clues and red herrings, as they join Miss Jane Marple, in unravelling a most unusual murder.
The setting for the play, regarded as one of Christie’s masterpieces and written in 1950, is the sleepy, English village of Chipping Cleghorn, a place where nothing out of the ordinary ever happens. That is, until a notice in the local gazette is placed, stating that ‘A murder is announced and will take place at 6:30pm on Friday 13th at Little Paddocks.’
This happens to be that very evening and the address belongs to that of Letitia Blacklock, who operates ‘Little Paddocks’ as a stately boarding house and home to several, now quite confused boarders. As the afternoon draws to a close, a mood of nervous anticipation ensues among the residents, along with several curious villagers who have also dropped by, including Miss Marple.
All wait excitedly to see what kind of party joke or entertainment might be revealed, but at 6:30 pm precisely, the lights go out and the sound of a gunshot is heard. Murder most foul has been committed and the victim is not even one of the guests!
This is Christie at her best. For anyone who enjoys a good mystery, peppered with lively dialogue and sharp wit, this play will most definitely be one to look forward to in February next year.
“A Murder Is Announced’ will be staged at the Mittagong Playhouse between the 13th and 28th of February, 2015.
The auditions begin! Ebony Hope - Director

Australia day 26th January in historic Berrima 2015 promises to be an occasion that will attract nearly double the number of visitors to the event. The reason for this is the old Berrima Goal is going to be opened for inspection and tours over this weekend. That is Saturday 24th of January, Sunday 25th of January and of course Australia day Monday the 26th of January 2015.
The Rotary club of the Berrima district have
It’s Going to be a Loooong Weekend Australia Day
The Australia Day Celebrations in historic Berrima, over the last 10 years, have grown to be one of the Southern Highlands premier tourist events. Visitor numbers are in the vicinity of 5000 to 8000 thousand every year and on the increase.
What’s the attraction? Probably the location. No other village in the southern highlands can claim to have a more historic and picturesque backdrop in which to celebrate this day in our nations calendar of public holidays.
With over 60-market stalls, local and interstate, and entertainment for all the family; grand parades vintage cars, fire engine displays, fresh produce markets, face painting there is something for everyone.
The atmosphere is one of a real Aussie family day out with a bit of patriotism and pride in our country thrown in for good measure. The official part of the day starts at the Historic Berrima Court House Museum at 9.30 am
Berrima Celebrates Australia Daywhere young citizen and citizen of the year awards are given by the mayor of the shire.
This is followed by an address by the Australia day ambassador. After the awards ceremony it’s off to enjoy the rest of the day to hunt for that allusive piece of craft either in the market square in the more traditional shops in Berrima.

marshalled all their members and volunteers to manage the many unique events that will be held inside the prison as well as daily tours over the long weekend.
Enjoy a bush dance on the Saturday night, opera inside on Sunday night, plus many historic photos on display as well as guided tours. Colin Gelling, event manager, said this will impact on visitor numbers dramatically which will be great news for stall holders fortunate to have a stall, at an already proven event that attracts visitor numbers in the range of 8000 plus.
Our anticipation is that we will double those numbers over the week end and as such we are updating all our planning and logistics which will include having stalls able to trade over more than just the Monday Australia 26th January 2015 if they choose.
This will be only the third time the old Berrima Goal has been opened to the public since it was built in 1839. Book your Berrima Gaol Break Out ticket on line at www.gaolbreak.org.au

Bundanoon - the place to visit during 2015 as the Village celebrates its Sesquicentenary with events to entice locals and visitors throughout the year, including 1950s style fetes, bike riding and equestrian events, country dances, garden workshops plus many more. There will be of course, the big events that Bundanoon is well known for, Brigadoon, Winterfest, Garden Ramble and the Highland Fling to name a few and they’ll all be adding a little something to celebrate Bundanoon 150.
The village has a long history as a popular destination for families, honeymooners and those seeking to ‘get away from it all’ in the beautiful Moreton National Park with its magnificent escarpment views, walks and the abundance of wild flowers and birds.
It is to the park that we turned for a floral
emblem to mark Bundanoon’s celebration of 150 years as a community and by popular vote Pink Boronia was chosen and will appear on scarves, key rings and pins that will be for sale and Commemorative Medallions that will be presented to individuals during events throughout the year.
Everyone’s invited, so check out what’s on at www.Bundanoon150.org.au or email [email protected] We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful village.

Officially the highest zipline tour in Australia, the Illawarra Fly Zipline Tour involves flying on a series of elevated cable spans and suspension bridges from one platform to another, connected by tree platforms called ‘cloud stations’, and continuously attached to a steel cable suspended up to 35 metres above the forest floor.
This exciting adventure is guided by trained and experienced zipline tour guides. Our guides will control all departures and arrivals whilst providing you with an insight into our forest’s history and its features - it’s an experience you won’t forget!
Zipping through the treetops with panoramic views out to the Pacific Ocean, visitors will see the trees and forest ecology in a new light and learn about our growing and vibrant
forests while capturing unparalleled views of everything from the forest floor into the canopy and out to the Pacific Ocean.
The whole experience can take up to 2.5 hours as it includes the self-guided Treetop Walk for you to enjoy the forest from a different perspective before or after your Zipline Tour.
The Treetop Walk is the only walk of its kind in NSW. The 1.5km return walk takes in native rainforest, steel walkways featuring two gently swaying cantilevered arms, and a central tower raised nearly 50 metres from the forest floor.
