PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
The summer of 2016 is now officially
over according to the calendar. The
Branch now has to prepare for the
months ahead. October and
November are an extremely busy time
for 258. We have parades and also
the Poppy Campaign is just around
the corner. The Branch needs its
members to step up both with Poppy
tagging and the work that needs to be
done inside. The Branch is always
looking for ideas to raise money and
members suggestions would be most
welcome but, please do not offer a
suggestion unless you are prepared to
help.
Yours in comradeship,
Richard Viles. President Branch 258

What a poor turn out for the L.A. Western Night
Dinner dance. The Ladies deserve a showing from
the members.
I will admit that I was somewhat skeptical of Roast
Beef on a Bun, But it was great.
French fries and in keeping with the Western theme
“Chuckwagon Beans”. The food was top drawer.
It was a fun night and Bob Pettos’ music was right on
the money.
Those who didn’t attend missed a great evening.

Two Irishmen, Patrick and Michael, were adrift in a lifeboat following a dramatic rescue from a burning freighter.
While rummaging through the boat's provisions, Patrick stumbled across an old lamp. Secretly hoping that a genie would appear, he rubbed the lamp vigorously. To the amazement of Patrick, a genie came forth.
This particular genie however, stated that he could only deliver one wish--not the standard three.
Without giving much thought to the matter, Patrick blurted out, "Make the entire ocean into Guinness Beer!"
The genie clapped his hands with a deafening clash, and immediately the entire sea turned into the finest brew ever sampled by mortals.
Simultaneously, the genie vanished.
Only the gentle lapping of Guinness on the hull broke the stillness as the two men considered their circumstances.
Michael looked disgustedly at Patrick whose wish had been granted. After a long, tension-filled moment, he spoke:
"Nice going Patrick! Now we're going to have to pee in the boat!"

COLOUR GUARD Well September has come and gone and all the
kids are back at school. Your Colour Guard has
enjoyed a rather busy summer representing the
branch. On September 11th
we marched with our
Blues and Greys at Pine Hills Cemetery in order the
honour all of the Veterans buried there.
We also marched in the parade to commemorate
the Battle of Britain on Sunday, Sept. 18th
at the
York Cemetery at 160 Beecroft Road, Toronto.
On Sunday, October 2nd
your Colour Guard will be
celebrating our 50th
year at our Mess Dinner. Then
on Friday, October 28th
you are all invited to join us
for the Annual Colour Guard Dance. Tickets will be
available at the Bar and from any of our members.
Looking forward to seeing you there.

POPPY CAMPAIGN Poppy Season is fast approaching and we must get prepared. This will be my first time working on the
inside and we will need all the volunteers we can
get. There are many positions to be filled.
We need to get set up in the Memorial Room. The
poppy boxes must be delivered to the schools and
stores that are willing to accept them. The signup
sheets will be placed in the lobby, so we can all pick a
station and time to do our poppy tagging. Lists for
volunteers will be posted on the bulletin board. The
memorial room must be ready to receive all the
poppy boxes that will be returned. Finally, all the
boxes that were delivered to the schools and stores
must be picked up.
I will certainly miss getting out and doing my share of
tagging, but Ian can’t do all the inside work on his
own. Also, I must learn to help out inside and there is
nobody better qualified to keep me on the straight
and narrow.
I also have to thank Ian and Richard for all the
guidance and assistance they have given me so far in
getting prepared. So please keep our Veterans
welfare in the priority position that it deserves and
we will be looking forward to our Poppy Tagging and
Remembrance Day with renewed anticipation.
Bryan Wm. Bennett Branch 258 Poppy Chair
SERVICE OFFICER I would like to thank Rob Burridge for volunteering to
assist me with my duties visiting our Veterans. Rob is
one of our newer members and he will be visiting
some of the Veterans that are living in the Long Term
Care Facilities in the 258 area. Any other volunteers
would be greatly appreciated, as there are 60
veterans residing in homes close to the branch,
thereby keeping me rather busy.
Rob has turned in two reports so far and I am pleased
to tell you that they are top notch! I’m not at liberty
to mention the details, but I can say he doesn’t miss a
thing and I am very grateful for his support.
At this time we have a good supply of assistive
devices in storage to supply to our veterans. So don’t
be afraid to call and we will do our best to help you, if
we possibly can. This also goes for any of our
members that can use a hand. If we don’t have
Page 5 of 9 October 2016
exactly what you need, maybe we can assist you in
finding it. I’m making a lot of good contacts during
my travels.
Bryan Wm. Bennett, Branch 258 Service Officer
SPORTS OFFICER Branch 258 won the 2016 District Shuffleboard and
therefore will be the host for the 2017 District
Event to be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017,
Congratulations!
There was a Zone Sports Meeting held at Branch
345, that I was unable to attend and I thank Larry
French for attending in my place.
There will be a District D Sports Meeting held on
Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Br. 1/42 (243 Coxwell
Ave.) at 11 a.m. Larry French and I will be
attending.
The Tuesday Ladies Dart League has donated a new
Dart Board and Flights for the Darts for our use in
the sports room. We take this opportunity to thank
the Ladies for their very kind donation.
Postings are on the board in the sports room for
Zone Cribbage and District Snooker. All interested
members are asked to register as soon as possible,
so that the paper work can be processed.

Patrick died. His will provided $40,000 for an elaborate funeral.
As the last guests departed the affair, his wife Kelly turned to her oldest and dearest friend. "Ah, well, Patrick would be pleased," she said.
"You're right," replied Shannon, who lowered her voice and leaned in close. "So, go on, how much did this really cost?"
"All of it," said Kelly. "Forty thousand dollars."
"Aw, No!", Shannon exclaimed, "I mean, it was a very grand affair, but $40,000?"
Kelly answered, "The funeral was $6,500. I donated $500 to the church. The whiskey, wine and snacks were another $500. The rest went for the Memorial Stone."
Shannon computed quickly.
"Sacred Heart of Jesus! For the love of God Kelly, $32,500 for a Memorial Stone? How big is it?"
