N COMUNN GAIDHEALACH, or The Hichland Association, has

for the last sixteen years been doing brave pioneer work for Gaelic

teaching, Gaelic literature and Gaelic music, with a comparatively small

membership and little money at its disposal.

It has organised this great FEILL or HIGHLAND BAZAAR for the

double purpose of spreading a knowledge of its work and objects, and

for raising a fund whicli will enable it to carry out its patriotic and useful

programme in its eutirety.

The contents of this book testify to the remarkable success which has attended the

inaugural arrangements, and to the enthusiasm which has been evoked among all classes

and conditions of Gaels, not only at home, but in the Lowlands, in England, in the

Colonies and other over-sea lands.

This book is a proof, if such were needed, how deeply rooted in their hearts is the

love of land, language and race and how sympathetically the outside world regards that

part of the scheme intended to assist in procuring remunerative home employment for

the Highland people, a people who are the living representatives of the old Celtic

population of Scotland, still dwelling on the classic soil and speaking the ancient and

expressive tongue, a people whose qualities and worth have been handed down in song

and story from the earliest times, whose loyalty and courage have been proved on manya hard fought field, and whose honesty, intelligence and courtesy place them to-day in

positions of trust and importance wherever the white man's burden is taken up.

Stress of circumstances, however, is causing theni in ever increasing numbers to

forsake their native glens, some to settle in distant Colonies, others to be absorbed in

the teeming and degenerate populations of our great cities.

The Nation can 111 spare such as these

By developing home employments, much is already being done, much more can yet

be accomplished to supplemcnt their present precarious means of livelihood, and to assist

them in earning a moderate contpetence, and so ensure the rearing of future generations

among the wholesome happy surroundings of their native land.

The late Father Allan Macdonald of Eriskay loved his people as few have done, and

gave himself for them. They were poor people, many possessing but the barest meansof subsistence, but he used to say, and he was surely right, he would sooner see them as

they were in their rocky island home, innocent and unspoiled, happy and good, than

possessing more comfort and luxury, along with the temptations and deteriorating

infiuence of city life.

It will not take long to peruse these pages, but there is scarcely a line which is not

a record of strenuous work—there is scarcely a name whose owner has not freely given

much time and trouble to one department or another of this many-sided Feill.

All have worked together, shoulder to shoulder, inspired by one purpose, united in

one aim, and they ask as their reward the whole hearted co-operation of every reader.

Bazaars for various purposes are unfortunately always with us, but Feill aChomuinn Ghaidhealaich is a unique undertaking coming but once in a lifetime.

It afibrds an opportunity of shewing practical patriotism, and offers the privilege of

working for Tir agus Teanga. It is hoped, therefore, it may in this year 1907 be given

the precedence over all other interests and demands which are tugging at the purse

strings and asking for time and attention.

It is a National—an historical undertakìng. Let it then be worthy of our Country, our traditions, ourselves, and of our place as Scottish Gaels among the Nations.

AN COMUNN GAIDHEALACH.

Its Origin and Aims.

By the Rev. M. NICOLSON MUNHO, M.A., Taynuilt.

THE society known as An Comunn Gaidhealach has heen so prominently hefore

the public of late in connection with its annual Mòd or Song Festival, and

particularly in the organization of the great and almost world-wide enterprise

of the "FETLL," that it may he useful to relate briefly its origin and the objects for

which it was originally formed. It was in the town of Oban in the last week of April,

1891, that the inauguration of the Society took place, and the programme of the first

Mòd is dated 13th September, 1892. The idea of forming a society to cultivate the

national music and hterature came originally from "Wild Wales." The remarkable

success of the Eisteddfod, and the tenacious and enthusiastic patriotism of the Welsh

set some Highland gentlemen thinking, and in the year 1890 there were more than one

who felt convinced that a Highland gathering on Welsh lines, adapted of course to the

Highland environment, should be started and that the time was now, or never. It so

happened that Dr. Masson, the beloved Professor of English Literature in Edinburgh

Ln'versity, to whose inspiring teaching many a Highland student owes a lifelong debt

of gratitude, had heen visiting the Welsh Eisteddfod in that same year ; and on his

remrn to Edinburgh, with the Welsh enthusiasm fresh upon him, he wrote a striking

lefer to an Edinburgh newspaper urging the formation of a similar organization in the

Scottish Highlands. This helped to ripen public opinion and a newspaper controversy

followed, but it would have been a case of "mòran ra radh is beagan <ja dheanamh"

were it not that certain Oban gentlemen of practical and energetic temperament took

thelead, issued circulars and set about forming a society, the idea and plan of which

had been in their minds even before the Professor wrote his letter.

Much adverse and jealous criticism of the proposal was uttered by Highlanders at

the time, criticism that appears fatuous and foohsh in the light of the years. Cassandra

voices were heard in the land asserting that the movement was doomed to faihire

from its commencement. But fortunately their counsel did not prevail. The "Oban

Times," in a leading article on the inauguration of An Comunn Gaidhealach, remarked

acutely that "the prophcts of failure were in every instance gentlemen of the sort who

detect in everything that is not the product of their own hands and brains the deficicncies

of inexperience and ill directed enthusiasm. Like adversity, however, thc barking cynic

has his uses, and it is nothing derogatory to the programme of the Association that it

has utilized to some extent the criticisms of even those who made no secret of their

desire to strangle the movement at its hirth." So, despite opposition, the movement

took definite shape. Professor Blackie wrote sympathetically urging the Highlanders

themselves "to put their hearts and hands to the work," and advising them to be self-

reliant and not to depend on the aid of outsiders. This movement was really of spon-

taneous growth and has continued to be in healthy and vital touch with the people. Yet

there were some who honestly believed that the intellectual and artistic native culture of

Fcìll exccuttoc Commìttcc.

AN COMUNN GAIDHEALACH—continued.

the people had been so long moribund that it could not be revived, that the Gaclic was-

atits last gasp, and that the time was for ever past for a Highland Eisteddfod. Nothing

daunted by the pessimists and the croaking critics, the promoters of An Comunn took

a more hopeful view of the situation. They started the Mòd, and the great progress

of the past sixteen years amply justifies their courage and enterprise. The founders

of the Society and members of the first Provisional Committee are these:—Mr. J.

Macmaster Campbell, Oban; Mr. John Campbell ; Provost J. M'Isaac,; Mr. D. M'isaac

(the prcsent Trovost of Oban); Mr. Hugh M'Cowan; and Mr. Clements, Mus. Bac.

These gentlemen are all happily still with us, and deserve to be held in honour.

The programme of the first Mòd is an interesting document. It is the size of a single

sheetofordinary notepaper. Thereareonly ten competitions with 18prizes. Yearbyyear,

slowly but surely and steadily, the number of competitors increased and the prize fund

rose. In the present year the syllabus of competitions is quite a large booklet of 1 2 pages,

the mimber of individual prizes is 147. Nearly 400 competitors have entered their names

and over £200 is disbursed. The greater part of the prizes are for Gaelic Yocal Music.

There is an important contest for valuable prizes by senior choirs, with a great variety

of prizes for solos and duets under varied conditions. The children's department is

developing rapidly. This year tbere are two choral competitions, one for learners and

another for native speakers. and about a dozen other prizes for individual singers. The

Juvenile Department is most important for the future and it is cncouraging that this

year there are more entries than ever before. It should not be forgotten that the

writing of original Gaelic poetry and prose is encouraged.. and also the composition of

original music. Reading, recitations and the telling of tales have a department to

themselves. Prizes are offered for historical romances and plays in Gaclic, the study

of place names and various forms of Hnguistic and historical research is fostered.

Hundreds of unpublished Gaelic airs have been collected during past years, and a

eompetition in Celtic Art finds a place in this year's syllabus.

The Mòd is the chief event in the year for the Comunn, and by studying the

programme of the Mòd one can get a fairly correct idea of the objects for which the

society exists. The name "Mòd" means a court, a trial, or a general meeting and is-

a Gaelic word derived from the Norse, allied to the English "moot" and A.S. "mote.'i

For the anxious competitors it is indeed a court of trial, but for most it is simply a

great Song Festival. To it the clans gather from afar, and the torch of enthusiasm for

Gaelic is kindled anevv, to be carried, when they disperse, to every corner of the land.

Practically the Mòd is already by its organization of examiners and prizes a College o

Gaelic Poetry and Music. Its medals and awards are coveted badges of distinction

honoured by all Highlanders. It is a magnet that draws from obscurity the talented

sons of the soil and by its incentivc lielps materially to develope the native artistic and

imaginative and intellectual culture too long neglecled.

Of recent years it has been one of the aims of tlie Society to encourège the

formation of local branches. During the last four yenrs about 10 branches have been

formed eacli with a large local membership. Thesc branches are entitled to send

several representatives to the annual meeting of the whole association at the time ot'

the Mòd, und besides they send one member to the quarterly meetings of the Executive

Council. Manding Committees of tbe Executive give special attention to vafioiig

departments of the work of An Comunn. Therc is a vigorous EducationHl Cormnittee

that watchea over the question of Gaelic teuhing in Ilighland Schools, the

furtherance of which is one of the most importint o' jects of the Society. For this

object tinancial aid is urgently required. A Pul lic;.tion Comn ittee strugj:les with the

after money matters and push the formation of branches. There is also an Advisoiy

Committee and a Mòd and Musical Committee. To give full effect to the aims of AnComunn in further development there is much need foi money and it is confidently

anticipated that the result this great Bazaar will excel expectation and help greatly in

the strengthening and extension of the useful and patriotic work of the Highland

Association. It is felt that an Organising Secretary must be appointed who can give

all his time to the work of Propaganda and other details.

The funds raised can also be very usefully employed in hclping Gaelic speaking

young men and women to become teachers in the Highlands, a matter that vitally

coneerns the eontinuance of Gaelic as a spoken tongue. The work of furthering HomeIndustries, one of the objects of An Comunn, has hitherto been inadequately carried

out from the lack of funds. Here again the Feill should help greatly.

It might appear to some that this society with so many other objects to effect,

gives too much prominence to the musical side. But the founders of An Comunn were

wise in making it so. Music is the dynamic that moves the multitude. It has been

found by experience that the native music is the most powerful lever to overcome the-

mountainous indifference of some Highlanders to the charms of their own traditions,

history, and language

As in the old days spells of fatefnl power were laid upon individuals by faery

influence, so for a time, it seemed as if a spell had been laid upon the Gael to cause

him to forget for ever his nationality and his individuality, and to make the traditions

and love of his fathers appear as so much worthless rubbish in his eyes.

But as of old occult spells of evil could be met by mightier spells of good, so

to-day the Gaelic Muse, successfully invoked, exercises a powerful counter-charm,

re-awakens the spirit of the people, revives their hopes and dreams and kindles new

life and aspiration. It is not the speech making or the written appeal that is over-

coming opposition and winning the indifferent so much as our beautiful native music

that has even the power <-to cruate a soul within the ribs of death." The very spirit

of the Celtic race breathes in its music ; it appeals to something in the blood, to deep

hereditary susceptibility, with spiritual and elusive yet irresistable power.

All Hìghlanders should support the work of this association. It does not clash

with the aims of other societies already in existence, as may be seen from the generous

support that many Clan and County Societies give annually to the Mòd Prize Fund.

It is non-sectarian and non-political. On its platform there is room for Highlanders

of every class and creed. Thcse who join it will find that its work will unconsciously

broaden their sympathies and quicken their interest in everything pertaining to the

Highland people and their welfare.

In conclusion I shall quote a saying of Lord Archibald Campbell, the first

l'resident of the Association, at a meeting in Oban in the early days of An Comunn.

"We must remember that when people talk of education and culture that the best

culture of a race is its own." It is one of the fundamental principles of this Society

that the best culture for the Gael is that which has its roots in the past of his own

race. It is the culture which is most likely to lead to the unfolding of the richest

possibilities of the race in the future.

* j m S the encouragement of Home Industries and the furthering of south country

f~| people's interest in Highland Home Life and Work are among the main objects

of the Feill, the promoters have thought it desirable to exhibit a typical

representation of a "Clachan" or village of the Western Highlands and Islands, which

will give visitors an opportunity of learning much about the eftbrts of the native people

to earn their living by the manufacture of useful and saleable articles. The Dwellings

are shewn as " Sheilings," with their moss -covered thatched roofs and dry stone walls*

internally furnished with quaint fittings, while the Gaelic - speaking inmates will be

engaged at their usual daily tasks, such as spinning, weaving, knitting, carding, grinding

corn, etc.

The surroundings of the Clachan are very picturesque, being panoramic views of

Highland scenery painted by Colin Mackintosh, the well - known artist, and the whole

scheme is supplied and fitted up by Messrs. Fraser & Co., Inverness.

On entering, the Clachan is backed on the right by Loch Duich and the wild

mountains of Kintail. On the opposite side are the rugged peaks and characteristic

streams of Glenquoich. In front are seen the heights of Glenmoriston, where wild

mountain torrents come tumbling down " among the golden bracken and tinsel birch"

that grace the mountain side. Here also is a reproduction of Prince Charlie's Cave.

The Clachan will be exhibited in the Kent Hall of the St. Andrew's Halls, and

during the time of the Feill, several Highland Customs and ainusements will be enacted

at stated intervals.

The Convenership has been under-

taken by Mrs. 1). Cairns Maclachlan

on behalf of the Scottish Patriotic

Association, assisted by many willing

fiiends of the Highland people. The

promoters of the Feill hope that

visitors to the Clachan will be so

interested in the Industries that they

will continue to use Highland pro-

ducts so far as possible, and thus, by

bringing comfort and plenty to the

homes of the people, enable the High-

land racelto remain upon the land

of their forefathers.

Mrs>. Cairns Maclachlan, the otìicials

of the Industries Stall (see page 29),

OXl_'E in the days of the world, there reigned a King who had one daughteronly, Douce-Ca'iir she had been christened, for said the King, " she will haveas tender a heart as my Queen who is dead." And he brought up his daughterin the Court of Vouth, which was in a fair place at the edge of his Kingdom ; so

careful washe of her happiness that he surrounded her with sunshine, and gaveher four young companions Song, Dance, Laughter and Joy, who made merry with her, andover tliem he set Service, who guarded the Princess with fostering care ; thus the yearspassed and Douce-Cceur knew nothing of the world outside.

One evening at sunset a Stranger, whose name was Sorrow, passed unseen throughthe palace gates and meeting the Princess she looked into her eyes and laid a spell uponher. Then for the tirst time Douce-Ca'ur Icarned of the sadness and weariness thatbrooded over the world ; for the fìrst time she heard the sound of weeping ; for the tìrst

time her heart grew heavy and she was afraid, Darkness and silence came upon theland and tiine went satlly at the C'ourt. The King, her father, who was in a far country, heard what had befallen the Princess, and he sent Heralds to seek a Deliverer ; also, hebade them ask counsel of the Wise Woman of the Mountain—Poetry. Now Poetry pro-

claimed that one alone could break the spell of Sorrow and her messenger Hope wentforth to seek the pilgrim—Stranger. Then came the playmates of Douce-Cceur and tried

to draw her back to them, Imt she clung only to sorrow and drove them all from herFame, Riches, and Power, three noble suitors. arrived offering their charms against e

spell, but Sorrow made her blind and deaf to their words and she turned from them also.

Lastly returned Hope bringing thc greatest of all—the pilgrim Stranger. Beneathpiercing gaze, liis shining presence, Sorrow quailed and passed away with shrouded face,

leaving Douce-Cceur free. And the Princess reproached him for driving away her friend,

resenting his intrusion, but he answered her gently and she cried out to him the wrongsof the world tliat weighed upon lier heart. Wlth tender patience the Stranger spoke to

her of tlie truths that lay behind the relevations of Sorrow, and when Douce-Cceur, full

of wonder, Bought fco know the name of her Delivcrer, he bade her seek it in her ownheart. Forthwith she knew that hc was Love and that he alone held the key to tlie

Riddle of Life. ALIX. EGERTON.
