The Australian university sector has increased rapidly over the past two decades but the acceleration instudent numbers has far exceeded staff growth, according to an article in the journal People and Place .The academic staff component for teaching has grown at a much lower rate than for academic research

and there has been high growth in numbers of staff who support academic activities. The major 'villain'in this disjointed growth is federal governments that have divided funding into smaller and smallerportions, and demanded more and more time and resources to apply for such funding and beaccountable for it.
