Job Analysis, Recruitment & Selection Spring 2009
Job Analysis
Albitz (2002) finds that 81 percent of electronic resource librarians hired have three or less years of experience.
Feret and Marcinek (1999) find that librarians need skills technology to both manage and deliver information to its end users.
Markey et al (2005) find that librarians want to be team leaders of a technology group in the development of multimedia that provides instruction on library resources.
Recruitment
Anthony and Garbs (2005) finds that the difficulty in finding qualified library catalogers is increasing for academic libraries
Dewey and Keally (2008) study provides techniques to recruit librarians for the 21st century workplace. The authors used an in-depth case study of the University of Tennessee Diversity Libraries Residency Program along with programs from the Association for Research Libraries, the American Library Association, OCLC and IFLA.
Raschke (2003) finds that academic libraries need to migrate away from using the Traditional Risk-Averse Model and utilize the Innovative Risk-Accepting Model when recruiting and hiring librarians.
Selection
Wheeler, Johnson and Manion (2008) created a checklist of strategies to improve law librarian hiring
Howze (2008) finds that search committees are not significantly influenced by how a resume/cover letter looks (form) over the qualifications that an individual possesses for an entry-level tenure track position in librarianship (substance).
Lehner (1997) finds that the selection methods of academic libraries could be improved by utilizing some concepts used in human resource management and psychology literature on the selection of personnel.
