11.5 High temperature testing

What do I need to design a high temperature testing device?

Basic configuration:

•Materials testing machine with corresponding crosshead travel range. An approximate required value is a free installation height of about 1000 mm between the connection bolts for installing the high temperature components and minimum a test area width of 630 mm.

•High temperature furnace with 1-3 heating zones

•Control unit for temperature control of the high temperature furnace

•Swivel unitfor swinging the furnace out of the test area. When performing tests in ambient temperature the high temperature furnace can be swivelled out of the test area.

•High temperature connection systemAttention: When high temperature sample is gripped outside the high temperature furnace (e.g. with wedge or hydraulic grips) this HT-connection system is not required. Option 1: Direct connection to load cell Option 2: Connection via adapter systems (T-slots with mounting stud 36 mm or 60 mm) onto usual specimen grips

•Specimen grips(Function: Holding of the round or flat HT-sample) Option 1: Gripping of the HT-sample outside the HT-furnace with usual specimen grips Option 2: Gripping of the HT-sample within the HT-furnace with special high temperature specimen grips (This option is prescribed for standard specimen according to EN or ASTM)

Options:

•High temperature extensometerwith special sensor arms for direct extension measuring at the sample.

•Serial interfacefor transferring the temperature values into testXpert® II. Depending on the number of heating zones of the HT-furnace (max.3) up to 3 serial RS232 interfaces can be installed into the control unit of the HT-furnace. Via this serial interface testXpert® II can read in the temperature values and define the control parameters for the Eurotherm-controller. (Attention: the testXpert® II PC must have the same number of RS232 interfaces installed)

•Specimen temperature measuring unitfor exact determination of the temperature at the sampleOption 1: With 3 thermocouples in a distance of 25 mm attached to the specimen 1x directly on specimen upper area 1x directly on specimen middle area 1x directly on specimen lower areaOption 2: With 3 thermocouples attached to the • specimen and to the pull rods• 1x directly on upper pull rod• 1x directly on specimen • 1x directly on lower pull rod
