Ronnie Baker begins histhird season as coach atEau Claire, and, eventhough he has seen prog-ress, he is not sure howmuch last years improve-ment meant.

In his first year, theShamrocks finished 1-9but made the Class 2Aplayoffs thanks to a fourth-place finish in the region.Last year, they improved to4-6 but missed out on thepostseason. They play in

the same region as heavy- weights Batesburg-Lees-ville, Columbia and StromThurmond.

Its hard to measure im-provement in wins andlosses when we won morelast year but didnt makethe playoffs, Baker said.We want to make sure ev-ery day we step out on thefield we are getting better.Hopefully, that will trans-late into our goal of makingthe playoffs every year.

The improved victory to-tal has increasedinterest inthe program. Baker saidthe most players ever par-

    ticipated in the offseason

program, and he hopesthat will carry over to thefield.

Baker likes where histeam is skill position-wise,but the Shamrocks lostseveral key members alongthe offensive and defensivelines.

Marquise Boyan willstart at quarterback for the

third consecutive year. Hebeings a strong knowledgeof the Shamrocks spreadoffense and accounted formore than 2,000 yards last

year. He is being recruitedby a handful of FCSschools, including GeorgiaState, Central Arkansasand Georgia State. He alsohas an offer from Marshall.

Marquise Jones will beBoyans go-to option at re-ceiver. Hes a three-yearstarter along with fellowreceiver Jordan Stuckey.

Jones has offers fromDuke, Vanderbilt, Mar-shall, Toledo, Furman and

    South Carolina State.

If we can find time tothrow the ball, we have achance to move it againstmost anybody on ourschedule, Baker said.

Baker hopes WayneHenderson willbe his start-ing running back. Hender-son is facing discipline is-sues, and its unknown ifhe will be allowed to play.

Carlos Dubois is a bighitter for the defense atlinebacker, and he will seeextensive action on the of-fensive line.

Given the improvementlast year, Baker scrim-maged perennially strongMarlboro County and Cal-houn County thispreseason.

Playing that type ofcompetition helped usidentify our weakness ear-ly, Baker said. Our goalsof making the playoffs andadvancing far in the play-offs are still in place. Hope-fully, this is the season that

    takes us over the top.

Marquise Boyan returns for his third season at quarterback for Eau Claire.

One of the worst sightsthat A.C. Flora coach DeanHowell could have wit-nessed during last week-ends Richland Sportsara-

ma was senior quarter-back Stephen Cagle sittingon the bench with his an-kle wrapped in an ice pack.

    He did.Scheduled to play a

quarter, Cagle hobbled offthe field with an ankle in-

jury late in the opening pe-riod and was on crutchesthe last Howell heard. Thatputs his availability for theseason opener against Gil-bert in jeopardy. The ex-tent of the injury was notknown at press time.

Cagle was a key compo-nent as the Falcons com-piled a 10-2 record last

year one of the best sea-sons in school history. Heis going to be counted onto improve on his 1,300passing yards and be aleader for a solid nucleusof returning players.

Weve been relativelyhealthy all preseason,Howell said. We arent asdeep as I would like us tobe, so weve limited con-tact a little more than I

would like. Then Caglegoes out and gets hurt inthe final tune-up beforethe regular season. Hope-fully, its not going to be se-rious and well go fromthere.

The injury limits the Fal-cons in terms of leadershipand ability. Cagle is the sonof former White Knollcoach Mark Cagle, who ison the A.C. Flora staff, andHowell said having Ste-phen Cagle out of the line-up is like losing a memberof the coaching staff.

Hes been around thegame since hes been ableto walk, Howell said. Ibelieve he could call ouroffense without us helping

him. Hes just that knowl-edgeable to what were do-ing. He has a strong arm,and his mobility has gottenbetter. Hes a naturalleader.

The Falcons lost 24 se-niors from last yearsteam. But the junior varsi-

ty team went undefeated,so there is talent in place.

Jamey Dye will play akey role as a receiver, run-ning back and defensiveback. Keith Goss was theprojected starter at run-ning back but was lost forthe season with a torn

ACL. That will leave thebulk of the running backduties to Cameron Asbilland R.J. Joyner, both of

whom starred on the JVsquad last year.

Tenorio Johnson is abig-play threat at wide re-ceiver, and Schroder Carl-ton and Brandon Burns

    will provide pass-catchingdepth.

    The offensive line will

be anchored by seniorsDequan Miller, Matt Halland Max Reeder.

We have some new kidsin key positions, but welike the direction wereheading, Howell said.

The defense is led by se-nior linebacker Donte Lo-

vett, an All-Area selectiona year ago. Hes collectedmore than 300 tackles thepast two years and is theheart and soul of the de-fensive attack.

The defensive line is themost experienced group.Seniors Raquan Ruff,Reed McGowan and Mike

Barnes lead a talentedgroup. They have size andexperience, and thatshould help until the line-backers and secondary getup to speed.

The defensive backfieldsuffered major losses, andthe replacements at sever-al positions have not beendetermined. Jarrett Thom-as has emerged as a leaderof a group that needs togrow up early if the Fal-cons are to match the suc-cess they had last year.

Howell said its a workin progress with a youngteam. Plus theyve gonefrom the hunter to the hun-

ted because of the successthey experienced last year.

Weve had to start over with just the little thingsbecause these kids justdont fully know our sys-tem yet, Howell said. Weunderstand were going toget everybodys best shot. That comes with the terri-tory when you win. Its stillto be determined how

were going to fare in thefavorites role, but we wel-come the challenge.

Quarterback Stephen Cagle is a veteran leader for A.C. Flora, but he sustained an ankle injury during Saturdays Richland Sportsarama.

    ROSTER

For the first time in JerryJacksons four seasons ascoach at C.A. Johnson, theHornets will field a junior

varsity team.In the past, Jackson had

to use any athletes whowere interested in playingon the varsity because of alack of numbers. Slowly

but surely, that is chang-ing, and more interest hasallowed Jackson to startbuilding his program.

That is the lifeblood forgrowing a program, Jack-son said. The JV guys hadto play varsity before, andthey were getting beat upand ended up quitting. Now we hope to have thoseguys stay in the programand stay together four

    years.Even with that positive

development, Jackson isstruggling to get players tomake a year-round com-mitment. He has had better

success in that regard withthe skill-position players, whom he can take to vari-ous 7-on-7 camps to keepthem engaged.

Play on both sides of theline is suffering, though. Before C.A. Johnson tookthe field last week in theRichland Sportsarama, most of the linemen hadbeen in camp for only a

    week.We are hurting on line-

men, Jackson said. Someof them didnt come in thefirst week, and we havent

had a huge chance to work with them. I am pleasedwith what we are capableof doing once we start

working with them. Im ve-ry optimistic about thisteam.

    Eddie Boatwrightserved as Jonathan Good-

wins backup at quarter-back last season, and nowit is Boatwrights turn. Heis more of a thrower than arunner, the same asGoodwin.

The receiving corpsshould be the strength ofthe offense. Michael Knox,Kevin McDonald, Kenneth

McDonald and PeterGoodman have experienceand will be counted on tocarry the load. Wilbert

Jones moves to runningback after playing a varietyof positions last year, and

Jackson hopes using himin one spot will increasehis production. AnthonyEaddy also will contributeat running back.

These guys practicedtogether all summer, and

that should help us as theseason progresses, Jack-son said. They have a feel

for each other. But, again, the key is going to be howquick we can get the line tocome together.

One of the biggest sur-prises has been the devel-opment of Tyquan Turner. He transferred from New

York last year and neverhad played organizedsports, but should be astandout on the offensiveand defensive lines.

Mike Ashford is in hisfourth year in the programand will complementTurner on both sides of theline.

    Jackson has about 30

players on the varsityteam, so he needs his teamto stay healthy to be in theplayoff hunt.

Were still young andthin in many positions,

Jackson said. Hopefully, these guys will have somesuccess early so we canbuild some confidence inthem. We finished 2-8 last

year, and we dont want tohave another season likethat.

Eddie Boatwright takes over the quarterback duties fromJonathan Goodwin at C.A. Johnson.

Keenan experienced amajor drop-off last sea-son, when the Raiders

went 1-9 following a 9-2mark in 2009.Keenangraduated 19 seniorsfrom its 2009 team, with13 going on to play in col-lege. Coach Mitchell Mo-ton said that left him withan inexperienced teamlast season, but he hopesbeing thrown into the fire

will produce some coolresults in 2011.

We were a bunch ofpuppies being thrown in-to the ring with the

    wolves last year, Moton

said. We played closewith nearly everyone, butin the fourth quarter,

when depth became an is-sue, we had young legsand couldnt keep up.Hopefully that willchange for us this year. It

was hard to replace thattalented senior class.

Moton has his offen-sive line back, three of

whom Jonathan Gath-ers, Brandon Smalls and

    Joseph James will bethird-year starters.

The Raiders will rotatetwo players at quarter-back. Eric Griffin is moreathletic and more of adual-threat, option-typesignal-caller, while TitusHopkins is the betterpasser. Both will play ex-tensively this season, Mo-ton said

Whoever is under cen-ter will have a couple ofreliable targets at receiv-er. Tight end Matt Belton

led the team in receptionsand touchdown catcheslast season, and JoshuaMcCord has big-play po-tential on the outside.

The running game willrely on Dytrone Hyman,Pete Essaw and David Mi-chael Clarke.

I like what were doingon the offensive side ofthe ball, Moton said.

The offensive line is thestrength of our team, andI think we have someguys that can make someplays behind them.

The defensive line re-sembles a college line inregard to size. The Raid-ers average well over 300pounds across the front, led by 6-foot-6,330-pound ShanquanHarrell. More heft is pro-

vided by 340-pound Kev-in Canzater and320-pound Jerry Thomas.

We took our lumpslast year, but weve grownup, stayed together and

came out with great fo-cus, Moton said. Thoseguys up front make it eas-ier on our linebackersand secondary to limit thebig plays.

Linebackers TylerGeorge, Tyler Smith,Preston Perkins and Jere-my Austin should benefitfrom playing behind thehuge line. George led theteam in tackles last year, and Perkins was also astandout.

D.J. McCollum and To-ny McWhite lead a youngbut aggressive secondary.

I feel much betterabout where were at this

year than I did last year,Moton said. We need tostay healthy just like ev-eryone else, but theseguys really made an effortin the offseason to getbetter. I think last year

was a stumbling block, but we should be back onthe way up now.

    LOWER RICHLAND ROSTER

Lower Richland this year looks more like theteams that featured futureNFL players Richard Sey-mour, Lance Lauryand Da-

vid Patten than the small-roster squads of recent

    years.That has put second-

year coach Wayne Farmerin a muchbetter mood thanlast year. He was 2-8 in2010, but he hopes a foun-dation was laid for thefuture.

They learned the sys-tem and understand thementality were trying totranslate, Farmer said.We are getting better withour discipline and our

want-to as far as sacrificingto be a successful footballteam. The challenge now isto learn how to winballgames.

The Diamonds havemore than 70 players onthe roster but only eightseniors.

They lost eight starterson offense, and one of thereturning players, MarcusEdmond, is moving fromrunning back to quarter-back to run the wing-T op-tion attack. KendrickRoach will be counted on to

pick up the slack for Ed-mond, a 1,000-yard rusherlast year.

Senior Raymond West-on and Quinton Salley arereturning starters on theoffensive line, but the levelof experience tails off afterthat.

We lost a lot of our of-fense, Farmer said. Were

young all over the place, so we need to get those youngsters up to speedquickly. My biggest con-cern is our offensive lineand their youth.

Tight end C.J. Davis willbe counted on to be a big-play threat and to blockin arun-orientated offense.

The defense returns nostarters in the secondary.Roach, who also plays line-backer, and defensive ends

Alonzo Gibson andQuayshawn Waters willanchor the defense.

    But Farmer likes his

teams approach so far.We have to learn to

transition the things we doin practice to game situa-tions under the lights, hesaid. Inexperience is stilltaking place. With onlyeight seniors, Im lookingforward to the things tocome down the road. Everytime we have a chance toget reps in, we need to takeadvantage of it and get a lit-tle better every day.

Patrick, TJ Wilson, Stacie Bell, Bryan Sipes.

    ROSTER

When Dreher left thefield at Memorial Stadiumafter the Sportsarama onSaturday night, coach JoshStepp couldnt hide his en-thusiasm, even though heteam had played only atwo-quarter scrimmage.

    As he gathered his play-

ers beyond the end zone,he let them know their yearof hard work was payingoff. His next hope is the0-10 nightmare of last sea-son soon will be a distantmemory.

Last year, we were dealta tough hand, Stepp said.We took over a team thatlost 22 starters. That forcedus to play a bunch of fresh-men and sophomores andkids that had no playing ex-perience, and they wereforced to get their experi-ence on the field. After last

year, anytime we can getany type of success, that is

huge for these kids. The Blue Devils, who at

times started 11 freshmenlast year, feel like they havethe athletes necessary torun the spread offense bet-ter than they did a seasonago, and they hope the ad-dition of defensive coordi-nator Bobby Dan McGlo-horn will improve a de-fense that allowed an aver-age of more than 450 yardsper game.

McGlohorn, who wascoach at Lakeland Chris-tian School in Florida, hasscrapped the 3-4 look for a4-3 alignment.

The defense will be ledby linebackers Devin

Barnes and Josh Wilkinsand defensive back

Kwayshon Drayton. Allthree played key roles last

year and will be counted onto be leaders.

Weve had a tremen-dous offseason in the

weight room and duringthe summer, Stepp said.We are starting to see thefruits of our labor, and thekids are seeing how theirhard work will pay off.

Joe Fennessy is a senior who will start in his first year playing quarterback.Last year, he was comingoff shoulder surgery, soStepp had him at wide re-ceiver when he was

healthy enough to play.Fennessy has a strong arm, knows the offense and is anatural leader in the hud-dle, Stepp said.

Running backs JamesHuggins, Barnes and An-drew Goyins will be thestrength of the offense.

Wilkins also will see time atreceiver, with Reggie Shiv-er and Kendall Taylor pro-

viding big targets. The offensive line will be

thin and lack experience, but Stepp hopes runningthe spread will aid the unit.

The Blue Devils arent like-ly to smash the ball downthe field, so they want tospread opponents out andlet their guys get in spaceso they can make plays.

When you get a yearunderneath your belt and a year to install yourprogram, from the weightroom to what you do on thefield (that) makes a

world of difference, andthe kids are seeing that.Stepp said. We feel like wehave the athletes to run thespread. We feel like that isthe best thing for us withour lack of size up front.

Dreher quarterback Joe Fennessy hands the ball to running back James Hugginsduring the Sportsarama at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

When you have won astate-record five consecu-tive state championships, the last thing you thinkabout is rebuilding. Dur-ing its run, Hammond hasreloaded more than it hasrebuilt. But this seasoncould present the biggestchallenge for coach ErikKimrey.

    The Skyhawks return

seven starters three onoffense and four on de-fense so Kimrey is waryof allowing expectationsto overwhelm his youngsquad.

The only pressure theyfeel is the day-to-day pres-sure of getting better withevery repetition theytake, Kimrey said. Were

young and inexperiencedbut very eager. Knowl-edge is courage, and that

is something you gain ov-er time. Were trying to getthese guys in their com-fort level so they can per-form to their highestability.

Hammond averagedmore than 400 yards of of-fense last year and al-lowed less than 190, andthose numbers will behard to match with such a

young team. The offense will be built

around the running tan-dem of B.J. Bennett and

Joey DeAngelis. Kimreysaid Bennett was one ofthe most talented playershe has coached. DeAnge-

lis averaged 10 yards percarry last season, andboth are explosive, smooth runners who canrun inside or out and willshare time in the slot.

Those two will carry theload behind a young of-fensive line and a newquarterback. Gone is two-

year starter Dave Nidiffer, and in his place undercenter is younger brother

    Jake Nidiffer, a junior. The

younger Nidiffer has astrong arm and pocketprescience, but he needsexperience to reach thelevel of his brother.

Jake brings a lot of thesame qualities as Dave,Kimrey said. Hes a bigkid that can really throwit. When he gains experi-ence, hes going to be ableto run the offense fully.

Roo Daniels is the onlyreturning starter on theoffensive line. He will be athree-year starter at cen-ter. Others expected to seetheir first extensive action

will be Cole Brown, Wil-liam Love, Peter McWil-

liams and Patrick Kneece. The receivers are inex-

perienced as well, but Ni-differ will have a couple ofbig targets: tight end Can-non Smith (6-foot-4, 210)and Doak Fisher (6-3,185).

Were still going to be abalanced team betweenthe run and the pass,Kimrey said. We need tobe able to do both. B.J and

    Joey might have to carry

us early, but we should bemore balanced once weget the kids in their com-fort levels.

Defensively, the onlyreturning starter on theline is end Robbie Gandy.

Jordan Cox, Patrick Faw-cett and Patrick McCleanshould be in the mix.

Logan Smith and JohnAllen Babson are solid atlinebacker, and BradenShockley is a hard hitterat safety. That core shouldbe the strength of the de-fense, and Kimrey expectsthose three to lead by ex-ample. Ronald Brown,Stephen Mitchell,

Quayshon Myers and Har-ris Pharr are expected tocontribute at linebackerand in the secondary.

Again, until some ofthe younger guys are com-fortable with what weredoing, the veterans aregoing to have to lead us,Kimrey said. We had agreat spring and have car-ried that over to presea-son practice. I really like

    where we are right now.

B.J. Bennett reaches for a pass during practice. Hammond coach Erik Kimrey said Bennett is one of the most talented players he has coached.

For second-year Cardi-nal Newman coach AndySmyth, going to practicehas been a much morepleasant experience thisseason. Last year, the Car-dinals were limited by alack of participation andinjuries, and they limpedhome with a 0-10 record.

They had 21 players onthe roster, and on manyFriday nights suited up 18and had as many as eight

who played every snap. Soto have 35 players comeout for the team this sea-son has made planningpractice an easier task.

We didnt win a gamelast year, so we have to goup from there, Smythsaid. We had to go out andfind more kids to get in-

volved. We revamped the weight program. We were limited in what wecould do last year. We feellike weve made a good

turn in both numbers andthe quality of players. The Cardinals have

strong senior (15 mem-bers) and sophomore (16)classes. They will be test-ed by a challenging earlyportion of the schedule,

which includes five-timedefending state championHammond in the opener.

Senior Nick Palevich will be counted on to re- vive a running game thataveraged 120 yards pergame last year. He hasbeen a three-year starterat a variety of positions but

will be the featured backthis year. He is a straight-ahead runner who fits theoffense well.

Sophomores Cole Ba-con and Evan Dubois willbe expected to contributeto the running game as

    well.

Given the offense werun, moving the ball on theground will be key for us,Smyth said.

The quarterback battleis coming down to transferDalton Halfacre and last

years backup, Kody Wat-son. Whoever wins the job

will have some big targets:Jake Wilson, Jacob Augustand Austin Ajukwa are alltaller than 6-foot-2.

Were a little more ath-letic in several positionsthan we have been be-fore, Smyth said. Wethink weve got some piec-

es in place. I cant tell youhow that translates into

wins and losses, but Ithink well put a signifi-cantly better football teamon the field.

The offensive line willbe anchored by guard Bil-ly Solomon and tackleDan Maroney, both three-

year starters. Jack Moore,Mackie Reibold and MacSnoddy will providedepth.

Solomon is the onlyplayer expected to start onboth sides of the ball. He

will anchor the defensiveline, with Taylor Patten,

August and Snoddy alsoseeing time.Matt Erdman led the

team with more than 100tackles last season eventhough he played eachgame with a cast on atleast one of his hands be-cause he broke bones ineach hand. Bacon and Wil-son likely will be the otherstarters.

The secondary lost bothstarting cornerbacks, butSmyth thinks he can findthe right combination ofplayers to fill the voids.

Were going to be young, he said. Weforced people to fit last

year, but we have guys thatfit now. Key is to stay awayfrom injuries. We feel, ifthat happens, we have achance to move these kidsaround and give them achance to be successful.

    Cardinals have moreoptions this year

Ben Lippen lost threegames last year includinga 9-7 setback to AugustaChristian in the first roundof the SCISA Class 3A play-offs in which it heldfourth-quarter leads. With asolid nucleus returning, coach Reggie Shaw hopesthe Falcons find a way to win

those games and improve ontheir 7-4 record.

The Falcons welcomeback 12 starters, includingquarterback Austin Irish, leading rusher Tyler Renewand a host of defensive play-ers. The biggest concern isreplacing four starters onthe offensive line.

The interior is a concern, and weve still got some

work to do, Shaw said. Wearent where we want to beright now, and we have somequestion marks, but I alsofeel like we have some guysthat have been tested andare capable of making

plays.Ben Lippen is in the sameregion as five-time champi-on Hammond and opensagainst Heathwood Hall in akey region game Aug. 26.Shaw hopes the experienceof his team pays dividendsagainst a difficult schedule.

The offensive attack willcenter on the arm of Irishand the running of Renewand Tuck Benefield. Irishthrew for a little more than1,000 yards last year and hasthe potential to greatly im-prove, Shaw said.

Renew rushed for morethan 1,000 yards despitemissing three game becauseof injury. Benefield will seeplenty of action in the back-field and will double as theleader of the defense fromhis linebacker spot.

Branson Despres is theonly returning starter on anoffensive line that paved the

way for more than 2,500yards in 2010. Despres willbe a three-year starter attackle. Blake Holloman and

Seth Rhoden will be countedon to log a lot of snaps as

well. Shaw is counting onthese same players on thedefensive line as well.

Irish will have Taylor Ste-vens and Fraser Hahn as big-play targets at wide receiver.

Greg Williamson will re-join Benefield to give the Fal-cons a solid linebackingcorps. Hunter Spivey re-turns in the secondary and

will have help from KeatonWalker, James Patterson and

Michael Parks in a deep, ath-letic unit.

With the low participationnumbers, Shaw knows histeam has to stay healthy.

We have some guys ondefense that we feel reallygood about, Shaw said.Last year we suffered someinjuries and maybe didnttrain the best way possible.

We changed our focus in theoffseason to make surethese guys are ready to playa longer season this year.
