price. The landing gear is available in four sizes for

wheel diameters of 70 - 165 mm.

FEMA retractable landing gear for large

scale gliders with FES (Nose drive FES)

This retractable landing is is mainly similar to our

standard retractable landing gear with the exception of

extended swinging arms. The retractable landing gear

with FES is available in two sizes for wheel diameters

of 90 – 127 mm.

damping can be adjusted to the weight of the model

by three damping variations all of them available for

immediate delivery. The required springiness of the gas

pressure spring can be calculated as follows:

Springiness (N)=model weight in kg x 40 (1kg~t10N)

Gas pressure springs are available with a springiness of

200N, 300N, 400N. Models of more than 10kg require

the attachment of 2 springs, more than 20kg require the

attachment of three springs.

The additional kit for spring-loaded mounting includes

two stable aluminium angles with borings for the

mounting. They are attached to the fuselage bulkhead

with the same screws as the retractable undercarriage.

This makes it possible to prepare the fuselage bulkhead

as shown in the illustration and you obtain enough room

for building in the moulded seat.

For the safety of your model, we recommend the

attachment of a wheel brake independently of whether

the undercarriage is attached fi rmly or spring-loaded.

The wheel brake is operated by a servo and it can be

applied extremely sensible though its high brake power.

If the retractable undercarriage is attached fi rmly, the

brake-servo can be mounted on the front fastening-

bulkhead or directly on the chassis of the undercarriage.

A retractable undercarriage is essential for scale

and semi-scale models. The “FEMA retractable

undercarriages” are being used successfully for years

and have demonstrated their ability in fl ight practice.

Mr Gardemin wrote in his test report about retractable

undercarriages:

»FEMA retractable undercarriages are without any

technical paraphernalia but they are designed 100%

functional and sturdy.«

We still feel obliged to this statement, now and in future.

The new generation of FEMA retractable undercarriages

for large sail-planes is a logical development of the

proven undercarriages which we have been producing

since 1988. The retractable undercarriages are designed

modularly and thus can be adapted perfectly to different

conditions. The undercarriages can be installed either

fi rmly between two fuselage bulkheads or spring-loaded.

If they are used together with FEMA solid tires, these

retractable undercarriages withstand even extreme

strains. The infl exible mounting between two bulkheads

of the fuselage is perfect for standard models. It is

advisable to use spring-loaded carriages for really soft

touch-downs. The gas pressure spring makes the best

We have made the mounting of the springloaded

version considerably easier and also made room for

the attachment of the moulded seat.

Wheel cover from glass fi bre reinforced plastics. The wheel cover is an ideal splash guard and pro-

tects the inside of the fuselage against spraying water and dirt during take-off and landing. You just have to slide the wheel cover between the rocker arms of the retractable undercarriage and attach it with silicone adhesive.The wheel cover is retrofi ttable for all FEMA undercarriages, that have been previously delivered.


If it is attached spring-loaded, the brake-servo has to be

attached to the chassis of the undercarriage in order to

ensure the safely functioning of the wheel brake when the

retractable undercarriage is spring defl ected. If the brake-

servo is attached to the chassis of the undercarriage,

an additional reversing lever (stock number 9890/22) is

necessary.

The retractable undercarriages have the following outstanding

features:

l Reliable functions - Bolt mechanisms on both fi nal positions.

l Highly effi cient wheel brake - safety for model and operator.

l Spring-loaded installation - for really soft touch-downs.

l Robust attachment in the fuselage - between two

plywood bulkheads.

l Installation height in the fuselage is relatively variable .

l Installation of 1 to 4 servos is easily possible

in connection with the servo holder (landing gear rudder,

vertical rudder and elevator rudder)

l The wheel frame made out of spring steel ensures a safe

function of the ventral fl aps.

l A detailed instruction manual makes the installation as

easy as possible. With these retractable undercarriages,

we set new standards concerning quality, modularity and

price.

If functionality, operational security and quality are decisive points for your applications, then our control arm is

the right choice. The control arms have an ideal holding force (without abrading a surface on the shaft) and can be

positioned very sensitively. You can use clevis M3 or spherical head M2.

Z-shaped servo mount and angled clevis, suitable for all FEMA retractable undercarriages

The Z-shaped servo mount solves the problem of the slanted guidance in order to extract/detract the retractable under-

carriage. Therefore, the servo can be mounted in a horizontal position for a smooth and linear operation of servo lever

and undercarriage lever. It is recommended to operate the servo with a deflection of 180° - thus the tilted clevis is

the ideal addition. The Z-shaped servo mount includes all necessary drill-holes for the assembly on the retractable

undercarriage and for the installation of a standard servo. The L-shaped servo mount is ideal for the assembly of the

brake servo.

Retractable undercarriage by FEMA

for self launching large model gliders

with nose drive (FES).

Following the general trend that more and more

large model gliders are equipped with a nosemounted

motor, this retractable undercarriage represents the

perfect solution.

We extended the rocker arm by 30 mm to guarantee

a smooth take off from the ground for large model

The retractable undercarriage is suited for wheels

with a diameter of 112 and 127 mm and is essentially

identical with the well-proven retractable undercarriage

of type 9810A.

Recommended servo for the activation of the the landing gear

FEMA‘s retractable undercarriages are equipped with a balance spring, and thus only a minimum effort is required

to extend and retract the landing gear. A higher effort is needed to open the landing gear door as it is activated

by the landing gear. Basically every standard servo with a regulating time of more than 0.5 sec/40° is suited for

the activation of the retractable landing gear. For a smooth motion sequence we recommend a low-speed steering

servo with an amplitude of 180°. The use of the Z-shaped servo mount with stock number 9890/60 and the an-

gled clevis with stock number 9890/62 guarantees an ideal straight linkage. If you mount the landing gear doors

according to our suggested installation we recommend the following torque for the servo:

By means of a complex tool development in co -

operation with well-known rubber and plastics

processors we managed to improve the quality

notably compared to the present solid rubber

wheels. Larger rims support the tire in case of

lateral strain in an optimal way so that even

extreme crosswind landings can be absorbed

easily. All sizes are now supplied with guide grooves to keep your model on track.

FEMA wheels with glass fi bre reinforced rims and aluminium hubs are designed to meet the highest demands and are

suited for engine models as well as for large scale gliders. The wheels are extremely resilient and have ideal damping

features. Even the load of the model weight for several hours in midsummer temperatures does not lead to the dreaded

fl at tire. Despite their extreme stability, the wheels are very light. With FEMA wheels you don’t have to worry about

infl ating the valves.

Axles for models with engine

We deliver axles for models with engine made out of high-quality

tempering steel that match our solid tire wheels of a diameter of

90-178 mm and a hub diameter of 6.1/8.1mm. The threaded

length is measured in such a way that it is possible to attach also

the wheel cover. A nut secures the attachment of the wheel. The

bearing of the axle is made out of high-quality aluminium and has

a diameter of 10/12 mm. The axle is attached to the smooth stem

in order to avoid a notch effect that is common at an attachment

at the thread.
