Barry Goralnick’s Capsule Collection for Vanguard Furniture“Among the pieces we are introducing are what Vanguard president Andy Bray refers to as ‘the jewelry’ of the company,” says designer Barry Goralnick. “Our 16 martini tables are the perfect size to accessorize a room and add sparkle and function. It was inspired by a garden chair that you sit on all over India, and I wanted to upholster it to create this quintessential atmosphere of India,” says John Robshaw. “In Jaipur, I rest in these chairs as I take my breakfast and morning chai in the gardens, watching the peacocks hurl down from the trees. Our version is upholstered, as I envision them sitting around a dining table.”

The season’s hottest offerings are making their mark at High Point, and who better than the designers themselves to point readers in the right direction? Four of the industry’s top designers introduce their favorite pieces from their own collections in an EAL exclusive.

nterior designers aren’t the only creatives making themselves at home this season. Even the most succinct roster of the fashion

world’s forays into interiors reads like a guest list for one of Anna Wintour’s issues: Cynthia Rowley, Kate Spade, AERIN, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein—and more are coming to the table (pun intended) each market.

Interior designers have High Point, Salone del Mobile and Maison & Objet. They count early pioneer Elsie de Wolfe among their patron saints. Fashion designers claim their counterparts: Fashion Weeks in Milan, New York, Paris and London, and founding-father legends like Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior. Talking the nitty-gritty, both trades rely on mood boards, textiles and other tools. But how similar are the two worlds, really?

The connection is, in many ways, a near-seamless one. Natalie Shirinian, who is producing “Interior Motives,” a documentary exploring the relationship between fashion and interior design, planned for release this summer, explains: “Fashion designers are in the business of creating looks that will enrich the person wearing the clothing. The same goes for interior designers,” she says. “You are not only

dressing the home. The client will feel a sense of confidence and, hopefully, happiness once they step into their space.”

Timelines differ—interior projects can take a year or more while their runway-strutting counterparts are often “churned out at such a fast pace,” according to Shirinian. “Of course, the world of fashion has a faster pace, and there’s a constant need for

new ideas, which I find invigorating,” agrees Debs Camplin, Senior Vice President of home design at kate spade new york. “I find I have more time to think when working on interiors, but my decisions last longer so there’s more pressure to create something with longevity.”

The creative processes, however, are comparable. “For me, the world of fashion and interiors are so closely linked that at times it’s hard to tell which directly influences the other,” says Camplin. “I don’t intellectually distinguish between them as both worlds are so important to my creative process.” Curiosities by kate spade new york at Kravet, a newly premiering collection, draws on polka dots, florals and stripes from the brand’s print archive, translated into bold and feminine prints, weaves, wallpapers and trims.

Cynthia Rowley finds furniture and apparel design very much alike. For her Hooker Furniture collection, she explains, “I started with color, materials, and storytelling, the same process I use to design my fashion collections. I feel that fashion inspires furniture design. For instance, one of my athletic/fitness suits inspired a chair design.” And the proverbial fabric can be cut both ways: “Some of the furniture pieces I designed have served as inspiration for what I will be presenting in upcoming

fashion collections,” shares Rowley. Rowley’s collection, debuting this spring, includes 150-plus pieces designed with runway influences: silver and gold leaf, mercury glass, jade onyx tops, apparel prints used in upholstery fabrics, bold colors, plinth bases, mother-of-pearl inlays, tassel drawer pulls and pendant hardware.

Other industries are coming home, too. Lighting and home décor is a natural fit for beauty icon Aerin Lauder, who will be showing a new collection with Visual Comfort this Market. AERIN sprung from not only what Lauder saw as a void in the home-goods marketplace, but has also been a natural fit for its founder. “Although beauty is my heritage, home and accessories are my true passion. The modern woman wants more than just a fragrance,” says Lauder. “She sees beauty as an extension of herself, her wardrobe, her home and her family.”

Given fashion’s cutthroat reputation, the recent crossovers seem more like friendly overtures than calculated invasions into the home space. Or perhaps the collections are simply natural connections for which the time has finally come. “There is a symbiotic relationship between the two worlds,” designer Rowley puts it. “They feed and nourish each other.”
