PROVIDING CARRIER-CLASS RESILIENCY WITH MULTI-SERVICE IRONWAREThe NetIron CES 2000 Series is built on the same Brocade Multi-Service IronWare® operatingsystemthatpowersmission-critical NetIron XMR and Brocade MLX Seriesrouters,simplifyingintegrationwithexistingnetworks.Keycapabilitiesincludeanindustry-standardinterface,supportfor robust routing protocols, MPLS VPNs, advancedLayer2protocols,abroadrangeofOAMprotocols,advancedsecurity,andsimplifiedmanagement.

ENABLING TRUE CARRIER-GRADE ETHERNET SERVICESCarrier Ethernet is a ubiquitous offering definedbyfiveattributes—standardizedservices,scalability,servicemanagement,reliability,andQoS—allofwhicharesupportedbytheNetIronCES2000Series.
A Carrier Ethernet service can be delivered overanytransporttechnologyaslongasitsatisfiesthestandardsandattributesassociated with the service. Examples of possibleunderlyingtransportmechanismsinclude native Ethernet using 802.1Q VLANs,MPLS-basedLayer2VPNs,IEEE802.1ad PBs, and IEEE 802.1ah PBBs.
Standardized ServicesBecause the NetIron CES 2000 Series is certifiedforMEF9,MEF14,andMEF21,providers can offer E-LINE, E-LAN, and E-TREEservices—thestandardizedservicenames for point-to-point, multipoint, and rooted multipoint services. These services can be offered using 802.1Q VLANs, PBs, PBBs,orMPLSLayer2VPNs.
ScalabilityThe NetIron CES 2000 Series supports up to128,000MACaddressespersystem.Support for 100/1000 Mbps SFP ports or10/100/1000MbpsRJ45ports(withwire-speedperformanceevenatfullload)helpsensureavailablecapacityonuser-facing ports to accommodate provider customers that want to upgrade to a higher-bandwidth service. In addition, the use of LinkAggregationGroups(LAGs)enablesthe aggregation of multiple links to provide even higher-bandwidth services at the User NetworkInterface(UNI).
TosupporthighlyscalableCarrierEthernetservices, Brocade has developed an innovative framework called Ethernet ServiceInstance(ESI).UsingtheESIframework,providerscanflexiblydefineand assign VLANs to service instances withinthenetwork—enablingthemtorapidlyinstantiateandeasilymanageE-LINE,E-LAN, and E-TREE services.

The NetIron CES 2000 Series supports all the capabilities in IEEE 802.1ag, including ConnectivityCheckMessages,LoopbackMessage/Response, and LinkTrace Message/Response.ItallowsflexibleassociationanddefinitionofbothMaintenanceEndPoints(MEPs)andMaintenanceIntermediatePoints(MIPs)withinanetwork.Fault management functions of MEF 17 Service OAM are also supported. Together, these tools provide the capabilities to monitor, diagnose,andcentrallymanagethenetwork.
ReliabilityToprovidehigherreliabilityinCarrierEthernetservices, the NetIron CES 2000 Series supportsMetroRingProtocol(MRP/MRP-II),
theringresiliencyprotocolofchoiceonmanymetronetworksworldwide.StandardLayer2protocols such as MSTP, RSTP, and STP are also supported. The Brocade MRP/MRP-II implementationenablesthedeliveryofCarrier Ethernet services over ring-based topologies, including overlapping rings that helpoptimizetheuseoffiberinmetroringsandproviderecoveryfromnode/linkfailuresin milliseconds. Brocade MRP/MRP-II can also be used within PB/PBB networks.
Hard QoSThe NetIron CES 2000 Series supports up to eight queues per port, each with a distinct prioritylevel.ProviderscanapplyadvancedQoScapabilities(suchastheuseof2-rate,3-colortrafficpolicers,egressshaping,andpriorityremarking)toofferadeterministic“hardQoS”capabilitytocustomersoftheservice. In addition, the NetIron CES 2000 SeriescanbeconfiguredwithingressandegressbandwidthprofilesperUNIthatcomplywiththerigidtrafficmanagementspecificationsofMEF10/MEF14.

USING PBB/VPLS TO SCALE CARRIER ETHERNET SERVICESMostnetworkcorestodayarebasedonMPLS.ByusingVPLS,providerscaneasilyleverageanexistingMPLSnetworkto offer Carrier Ethernet services. In a VPLS network, participating Provider Edge(PE)devicesestablishafullmeshofpseudowires among all nodes in a VPLS instance.ToensurescalabilityoftheVPLSservice,providerscanutilizehierarchicalVPLS to limit the number of PE devices that participate in the full mesh.
Inaddition,theycanusePBBtechnologytoimplementhierarchicalVPLSbycross-connectingVPLSatthePErouter(thehubdevice)toPBBspokesatthenetworkedge.Implementing hierarchical VPLS with PBB spokesprovidesanextremelysimplewaytoscale the VPLS service while reducing signaling overhead within the MPLS network.
Moreimportantly,itsignificantlyincreasesthescalabilityoftheoverallsolution,becausetheMPLSPErouteriscompletelyinsulatedfromcustomerMACaddresses—itmaps frames based on the backbone MAC header to a VPLS instance. Figure 1 shows anexampleofusingPBBtechnologyon

HIGH-PERFORMANCE TOP-OF-RACK SWITCH FOR DATA CENTERSIn the data center, cost reduction, virtualization,security,andconsolidationcontinue to be the top priorities. Growth in datatrafficandrisingapplicationdemandsrequire higher levels of performance and theabilitytoscalewithmorestorageandnetwork bandwidth.
The NetIron CES 2000 Series is designed to meet the challenges of campus and largedatacenternetworksbyprovidingabroad set of capabilities, including wire-speed performance, deep packet buffers, andlowlatencyinacompact1Uformfactor. Comprehensive support for IPv4 routing protocols, when complemented with VRRP and VRRP-E, is well suited for these environments. In addition, the NetIron CES 2000 series supports advanced services suchasMPLS(VLL,VPLS),QoS,andLayer3Virtualization(VRF)—makingitanidealtop-of-rack switch in high-end data centers or an edge router in campus networks.
Figure 2 shows an example of using Multi-VRF on the NetIron CES 2000 Series. Multi-VRF enables a single device to host multiple routingtablesandallowsapplicationtrafficseparationatLayer3forSLAassurance,regulatorycompliance,andsecurity.AnadditionalbenefitofMulti-VRFisreducedmaintenance and capital costs as well as betterbandwidthutilizationtoincreaseROI.
MULTICAST SUPPORTMulticasttransportisakeyenablerofnext-generation services such as IPTV as wellastheuseofvideo,financial,andotherone-to-manyapplications.Tomeetthis challenge, the NetIron CES 2000 Series provides comprehensive support for multicast switching and routing through avarietyofprotocols,includingPIM-SM,PIM-DM, PIM-SSM, IGMP v2/v3, and other platform-independent capabilities. Egress interface-basedreplicationoptimizesswitch performance and buffer usage withinthesystemtohelpmaximizenetworkperformanceformulticasttraffic.
ROUTING CAPABILITIESThe NetIron CES 2000 Series offers routing capabilitiesthatarecommonlyrequiredinedge aggregation and other applications within a provider’s domain. These capabilities include advanced hardware-based routing technology,whichensuressecureandrobust wire-speed routing performance.
The NetIron CES 2000 Series supports IPv4 andIPv6unicastprotocols—RIP/RIPng,OSPF/OSPFv3, IS-IS/IS-IS for IPv6, and BGP/BGP-MP for IPv6. To increase overall
serviceavailability,italsosupportsGracefulRestart helper mode for both OSPF and BGP, enabling hitless management failover and hitless OS upgrades on adjacent modular routers with these functions.
SECURITY CAPABILITIESMulti-ServiceIronWarecontainssecuritycapabilities that are available on the NetIron CES 2000 Series. These capabilities support inbound and outbound ACLs, ACL logging,advancedLayer2controls,limitsfor broadcast/unknown unicast/multicast, Multi-VRF,Layer2VPNs,andmore.
Receive ACLs assist in placing controls on unwantedtraffictargetedtowardthecontrolplane. Through tools such as ACL-based trafficpolicers,ACL-basedsFlow,andACL-basedmirroring,malicioustrafficcanbeeasilyidentifiedandpreventivemeasurestaken in the network. In addition, Multi-VRF can help segment the network into different zonesforsecurityandisolation.
SOFTWARE-DEFINED NETWORKING Software-DefinedNetworking(SDN)isapowerful new network paradigm designed for the world’s most demanding networking environments. The NetIron CES 2000 Series enablesSDNbysupportingtheOpenFlowprotocol, which allows communication between an OpenFlow controller and an OpenFlow-enabled switch. Using this approach,organizationscancontrol theirnetworksprogrammatically,transforming the network into a platform for innovation through new network applications and services.
