QUANEX BUILDING PRODUCTS. OPENING WINDOWS OF OPPORTUNITY.

With today’s high-performance fenestration technologies, windows represent an opportunity to make use of

daylighting — and to actually save energy.

Quanex Building Products is bringing next-generation polymer material technologies and systems to the commercial

market with its award-winning reinforced vinyl window technologies designed to dramatically improve energy

efficiency, long-term durability, structural performance, condensation resistance and reduce sound transmission

over energy-challenged metal-based frames and components that lose energy.

You no longer have to limit glass in your designs for fear of energy loss.

THE QUANEX DIFFERENCE.

When designing for sustainability and energy efficiency, it is important to consider the entire window system and its components. Quanex Building Products offers integrated solutions, including framing materials, system designs, IR-invisible color solutions and warm edge spacers to achieve leading energy performance.

• FRAMING The window frame is a key consideration when designing for efficiency. Proven globally, our hybrid-reinforced vinyl products for commercial applications are time-tested in the field to provide strength comparable to aluminum with significantly improved thermal efficiency.

• INTEGRAL COLOR Long-lasting aesthetic appeal is crucial to sustainable designs. That’s why we offer patent-pending, thermally bonded color technology that resists heat buildup and provides surfaces up to 12 times harder than paint. Our color solutions utilize low heat-absorbing properties that resist the harmful effects of the sun for longer life and profile dimensional performance.

• INSULATING GLASS SPACER Our Super Spacer® TriSeal™ structural silicone warm-edge spacer system is field-proven and designed to satisfy the toughest commercial glazing demands, including silicone structural glazing (SSG). Super Spacer TriSeal’s triple-seal design provides optimal thermal performance, superior condensation resistance, low moisture-vapor transmission and durability for light to heavy residential, commercial and architectural applications.

• SERVICE We employ a comprehensive team of commercial market experts, including product specialists, technical service representatives, product design engineers and material science technicians, who are dedicated to helping architects and fabricators meet their product performance goals. 3

FRAMING SYSTEMS EVOLVED.

Aluminum has long been the material of choice for

shop-built windows used in punched-opening applications

because of its flexural strength, color options and large

number of brand and supplier choices. However,

aluminum’s high thermal conductivity and propensity for

allowing heat to readily transfer have limited its use in

high-energy performance applications.

Environmental programs aimed at improving total building

energy performance, such as ENERGY STAR® and LEED,®

are demanding materials and systems that perform better

than aluminum, yet meet structural performance

requirements. That’s where our hybrid-reinforced vinyl

systems shine. You can have it all with a system that

improves thermal performance while ensuring structural

integrity and providing an array of long-lasting color options.

Our hybrid-reinforced vinyl systems shine.

VINYL — THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHOICE.Vinyl has a number of environmental benefits that make it an ideal choice for a variety of building

applications from piping systems, wire and cable insulating, to roofing and window framing material.

Vinyl is truly the environmental choice because it is:

• Process efficient, requiring less energy to produce than

most major plastics.

• Inherently energy efficient, helping to reduce greenhouse gas

emissions during their long life cycles.

• Durable, resisting corrosion and effects of weathering for years

of maintenance-free service.

• Recyclable with more than 18 million pounds of post-consumer

vinyl recycled annually according to The Vinyl Institute.*

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT.Since the 1980s, Quanex Building Products' Window & Door Systems

has been committed to protecting the environment through improved

vinyl material performance to lengthen product lifespan, recycling our

extrusion production scrap, encouraging closed-loop recycling from

customer production scrap returns, and packaging improvements.

Our ongoing initiatives earned us a Green Globe by Washington’s

Department of Natural Resources for leadership and activities fostering

stewardship to protect the environment, manage natural resources

and benefit the community.

Our hybrid-reinforced vinyl systems shine.

Aluminum has long been the material of choice for windows and doors in South Florida, but Custom Window Systems (CWS) of Ocala has challenged that tradition by offering the region a new, vinyl alternative using Quanex Building Products’ Vinyl compound.

CWS Esmeralda Bay Project Southern Florida

19

According to John Cwik, owner and CEO of CWS, Quanex has changed the game by providing engineered materials and coatings that remove all previous concerns the building products industry has had about vinyl. CWS’s vinyl window systems meet ENERGY STAR® standards and feature DP 120 glazing for storm protection. “It is the perfect design package for use in mid-level high-rises in South Florida,” Cwik said.

The Esmeralda Bay Apartments project in Miami, Fla., is just one example of CWS putting its cutting-edge window design to good use. The project specifiers were not looking for vinyl windows, but the building code dictated by Dade County required a high impact-resistance rating and thermal performance testing that would meet ENERGY STAR® standards.

“With these code requirements, vinyl window profiles were the only serious candidate,” Cwik said. “ Our higher-end, engineered vinyl window was ultimately chosen because of the DP-rated glass and strong and resilient construction, mixed with the premium fade resistance and ENERGY STAR® thermal ratings.”

The project also specified that the sliding patio doors be made of the same material as the windows, and incorporate a two-panel design. CWS took advantage of Quanex’s Mikron K2 Series commercially rated, vinyl sliding patio door system, which is designed to meet critical specifications for use in large sizes and where high structural ratings are a necessity.

In the end, CWS provided all 224 windows and 80 sliding patio doors for the 13-story, 94-unit Esmeralda Bay apartment complex.

“The designs specified that the windows and doors meet performance requirements similar to those found in commercial high-rise applications,” Cwik concluded. “With Quanex’s technologies and advancements in materials science, we were able to accommodate these requirements and still keep the project on budget.”
