Hakafot on Simchat Torah Hakafot will be held on Monday evening and Tuesday morning, October 5 th and 6 th . We are looking for a host or hosts to sponsor our refreshments. The program allows parents to contribute money annually in partnership with the synagogue and the Jewish Federation for an Israel trip for their children. In the summer the class meets Wednesdays before Mincha, and soon will be meeting immediately following Maariv. Weekday Minyanim Please join us for daily minyanim. Shacharit is at 6:00 am Monday through Friday, and 8:00 am on Sunday. Mincha-Maariv on Sunday through Thursday is 10 minutes before sunset. SheminiAtzeret/SimchatTorahOctober4-6At Sukkots end, Jews immediately celebrate the holidays of SheminiAtzeretandSimchatTorah.TheMidrash,or Biblecommentary,teachesthatonSukkotweare concernedwithallhumanitybecauseintheTemplewe offered 70 sacrifices during Sukkot, corresponding to the 70nationsoftheworld.However, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah is a holiday just for the Almighty and the Jewishpeople.Theholidaysremindusthatmaterial needsandwantsarefleetingillusions;therealmofthe spiritistheonlytrueandpermanent domain.We recite theYizkor,memorial prayer, during Shemini Atzeret to rememberthosewhohavegonebeforeusandsetout pathsforustofollow.OnSimchatTorah,Jewsdance andrejoicewiththeirentirebeingasweconcludethe readingoftheTorah,andthen,immediatelybegin readingtheTorahonceagain.Inspiteoftremendous adversity,oppressionandexile,wehavebeenpromised that the Torah will always guard and protect us.Even if allelseistaken away from the Jewish people, the Torah will always remain.A Little Bit About Kesser Maariv WelcometoKesserMaariv.OurfullnameisBeth HamedroshHagodolKesserMaarivAnsheLuknik.We havealongnamereflectiveofourlonghistory.Ourfirst minyantookplaceinChicagoin1865,andtheBeth Hamedrosh Hagodol officially opened in 1867 in downtown Chicago.Eventually the Shul moved to the West Side, and wehaveseveralcongregantswhocelebratedtheirBar Mitzvah at that site.After several mergers, in the 1950s BHHmovedtoEastRogersParkwhenitmergedwith KesserMaariv.Duetoshiftingdemographics,Kesser MaarivsoldtheirbuildinginEastRogersParkin1989, determinedtocontinueinanewneighborhood.Inthe followingyears,HighHolidayserviceswereheldinWest Rogers Park. In1993,weheldHighHolidayservicesinSkokie,andwe wereabletopurchaseourcurrentpropertyinSkokie.Regularminyanimbeganinanexistingfarmhouseon December31,1993.Inautumn1999the first phase of our buildingwascompleted,consistingoftheSocialHalland kitchens.The second phase of the Main Sanctuary and Bais Midrash were completed in 2004. Leadership RabbiLouisLazovskyhasbeenRabbiofKesserMaariv since1984,whenhesucceededRabbiZevWein,who retired.RabbiLazovskyhasservedtheJewishcommunity inmanycapacitiesforover35years,includingleading educationalprogramsandorganizationstobenefitimmigrants and the underprivileged.InJanuary2011theBoardofDirectorsappointedRabbi BenZionLazovskyto serve as Associate Rabbi in addition to serving as Executive Director. Our Davening FortheHighHolidays,weusetheArtScrollMachzor.ThankstothegenerosityofBob&SherylGreenstein,we have many Machzorim available for use. WehavealiveauctionofaliyasonRoshHashana,Yom KippurandSimchasTorah.Thispracticeismentionedin the Shulchan Aruch, the Code of Jewish Law.The auction is conducted immediately prior to taking out the Torah. OurChazzanimareDr.EdwardKaplanandRabbiDr. Pinchas Eisenbach who have been leading our High Holiday Servicessince1994.RabbiBenZionLazovskyhasblown theShofarformanyyearsandalsoservesasChazzan.Rabbi Eli Lazovsky reads the Torah.
